Crop Residue And Its Use To Control Soil And Water Loss, John K. Maddy Jan 1969

Crop Residue And Its Use To Control Soil And Water Loss, John K. Maddy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although Iowa farmers have made good progress in applying soil conservation practices, much soil and water is still lost from farm land. Increased acres of row crops with a corresponding decrease in meadow and pasture land has caused concern due to increased erosion by wind and water. The leaving of crop residues on the surface of the soil instead of covering them by plowing can provide good soil protection. Mulch tillage techniques on continuous row cropped land can equal crop rotations with meadow in controlling soil loss. Crop residues left on the soil surface over winter also helps to provide …

Measurements Of Boating And Fishing, Clear Lake, Summer 1968, Terry A. Proesholt, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Between June 29 and July 24, 1968, counts of boats and fishermen on Clear Lake were made at scheduled times. The peak count was 258 boats between 2 and 3 P.M. on a Sunday, about 1 boat per 14 acres. The total per week came to 5747 boat hours, with about 35% of it on weekends. Boat usage declined earlier in the evening on Sundays than on other days. Power boats constituted about 45% of the total boat hours, and fishing boats about 25%. Water skiers were most active in afternoon and evening, and most of the sailboating occurred on …

Removal Of Brushy And Wooded Quail Habitat In Three Southern Iowa Counties In Recent Years, M. E. Stempel Jan 1969

Removal Of Brushy And Wooded Quail Habitat In Three Southern Iowa Counties In Recent Years, M. E. Stempel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In southern Iowa there are still remnants of once extensive brushy upland game cover. Cost-share and privately financed brush removal programs, however, are further reducing the amount of remaining game cover. Three counties are considered here. Davis, Monroe and Wapello counties had some federally assisted clearing on 490 farms in the past 4 years. On 14 farms (1,820 acres) in Wapello County, since 1956, 82 acres of woody cover were removed by all methods. This included 25% of the choice quality upland game cover.

Statistical Methods For Integrating Populations Of A Fauna Collected At Various Localities, D. E. Simon, J. H. Elwell Jan 1969

Statistical Methods For Integrating Populations Of A Fauna Collected At Various Localities, D. E. Simon, J. H. Elwell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Parametrs characteristic of Atrypa Histrix, collected from various localities of the Cerro Gordo Member of the Upper Devonian Lime Creek Formation, were measured as: 1) Length, 2) Width, 3) Thickness, 4) Number of growth lines, and 5) Number of plications. The consistency of data obtained within a sample location was tested against similar data representing the total population by means of F-tests. Results suggested that the three sample locations represented at least two statistically random sample populations. These statistical differences in the single biologic population may be alternately interpreted as: 1) the population differed prior to preservation, or 2) is …

The Multistructured Course - A Preliminary Analysis, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1969

The Multistructured Course - A Preliminary Analysis, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An experimental program in which students may enroll in courses for varying amounts of credit, and select course objectives that are in line with their educational goals is described. A preliminary analysis of the results indicates that students tend strongly to approve of the goals of the experiment, have performed well, and, on the whole, react positively to the educational conditions involved. Early evaluation appears to show that some of the techniques commonly used for introductory courses are applicable, and others not very applicable, to education in courses involving upper division and graduate students.

Notes On The Effects Of Pretreatment Of Spores On The Iodinophile Vacuole Of Henneguya Exilisl, Dennis Galinsky, Paul A. Meglitsch Jan 1969

Notes On The Effects Of Pretreatment Of Spores On The Iodinophile Vacuole Of Henneguya Exilisl, Dennis Galinsky, Paul A. Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Spores of Henneguya exilis from the gills of Ictalurus punctatus were exposed to Lugol's solution, Best's carmine, Bauer-Feulgen reaction, and Mitchell's ammoniacal silver nitrate techniques in smears and sections. All of the techniques recognized as specific for glycogen stained the iodinophile vacuole selectively but not specifically, but adjustments to techniques were required. Fresh spores held at room temperatures or chilled for 24 hours were similar insofar as the iodinophile vacuole is concerned, and freezing had little effect. A week or more at room temperature after chilling or freezing for one day resulted in more diffuse staining reactions.

Exploratory Studies Of Collemholan Populations In Lowa, William L. O'Neill, Larry P. Pedigo Jan 1969

Exploratory Studies Of Collemholan Populations In Lowa, William L. O'Neill, Larry P. Pedigo

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Collembola, primitive insects of the subclass Apterygota, were studied in Iowa during the summer of 1968 as part of the National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Participation Program at Iowa State University. Soil cores were taken from woodlands, grasslands, cultivated fields, pastures, fencerows, marshlands, and caves, and animals were extracted with a modified Tullgren apparatus. Sixty-five collembolan species were collected, three of which were believed to be new. The results of systematic sampling at Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa, indicated that strong qualitative and quantitative differences existed among several woodland sites and a prairie-like site.

These groups were objectively and subjectively evaluated to identify any similarities and differences in (1) their attitudes toward the University, (2) their academic achievement and aptitude, and (3) their socio-economic background. Objective measures of these variables included the College and University Environment Scales (CUES), cumulative grade point averages, …

An Evaluation Of The Futures Market In Live Beef Cattle As A Means Of Shifting The Risk Inherent In Cattle Feeding, Philip Paul Hufferd Jan 1969

An Evaluation Of The Futures Market In Live Beef Cattle As A Means Of Shifting The Risk Inherent In Cattle Feeding, Philip Paul Hufferd

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been extensive research and study in the area of hedging price risk of agricultural products on commodity futures markets. This work, however, has been limited almost entirely to the hedging of grain. The first attempt to conduct futures trading in a live commodity began on November 30, 1964, with the advent of futures trading in live beef cattle. In the absence of research and experience with trading of this kind there has been a tendency to transfer conventional futures market logic, with respect to hedging, almost unaltered to the futures market for live cattle. Some researchers have felt, …

Seven Paintings: A Personal Search For An Ethical Consciousness, Dennis Myron Dake Jan 1969

Seven Paintings: A Personal Search For An Ethical Consciousness, Dennis Myron Dake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Success as an artist is dependent on the development of an ethical consciousness. The seven paintings which make up the thesis may reflect this awareness or ethical consciousness. The written comments are included to supplement and amplify the information communicated by the seven paintings of the thesis. The values that make up an ethical consciousness are not absolute, they are constantly being sought. This writing deals with that continuing search. Ethical consciousness is described here as consisting of three basic elements; appropriate attitude development, predisposition to accept the adventure of exploring the unknown, and sensitivity in dealing with all aspects …

The data was analyzed according to the following factors: sex, M.A., socioeconomic status, and maturity level to determine which approach is best for any of …

A Comparison Of Results Of Two Methods Of Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Melvin Wayne Thurston Jan 1969

A Comparison Of Results Of Two Methods Of Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Melvin Wayne Thurston

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An examination of the grade-equivalent scores attained in vocabulary and reading comprehension by third-grade pupils at Hudson Community School on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills over the preceding four-year period revealed that many of the pupils were seriously retarded in reading. During this period a total of 210 third-grade pupils were tested. Thirty-one per cent of these pupils scored one or more years below the norm for Iowa third-grade pupils in vocabulary, and the same level of retardation was true in reading comprehension for twenty-seven per cent of these pupils.

Most of these pupils had been taught beginning reading …

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger Jan 1969

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teachers of speech, even more perhaps than teachers in other field, occasionally need to stop and take stock. What, after all, is this subject or discipline that we profess? On what basis does its claim to independence rest? What is the proper business of a department of speech? What, ideally, should the study of speech entail? What areas of investigation and research are our special property? In what ways does training in speech contribute to a liberal education?

"What's His Weapon?" "Rapier And Dagger.", George D. Glenn Jan 1969

"What's His Weapon?" "Rapier And Dagger.", George D. Glenn

Iowa Journal of Communication

A well-prepared stage fight can be an exciting occasion. The flashing blades, the romantic sound of steel on steel, the growing tension in the audience as the fight builds to the inevitable climax; all these factors blend to create an exhilarating theatrical experience. All too often, however, the director treats the stage fight as an obstacle to be quickly skirted without physical damage to actor, costume or scenery - a situation better imagined than described. As Alfred Harbage points out, "it is easier to use a weapon with lethal skill than to seem to do so." The director, however, can …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the curriculum at Dakota Christian High School (DCHS) was meeting the needs of its graduates. An auxiliary purpose_ was to share with the National Union of Christian Schools the findings of the study so that all member schools could have access to the information and thereby improve their own program or interest them in such an evaluation. The data was gathered by use of a questionnaire. Copies of the questionnaire were sent to most of the graduates of the ten graduating classes of DCHS. One hundred seventy-nine graduates were contacted and …

A Developmental Study: Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Articulation, Cheryl Kay Greiner Jan 1969

A Developmental Study: Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Articulation, Cheryl Kay Greiner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was suggested that further investigation of the effect of delayed auditory feedback on articulation at various age levels might lead to a better understanding of the development of the self-monitoring system of ongoing speech. The present study was concerned with the effect at various age levels of delayed auditory feedback on the number of articulation changes (errors) and on the number of each major articulation error type. Ten subjects in each age group of 5-5½, 7½-8½, and 18-23 years repeated five seven-syllable sentences, first under a condition of synchronous auditory feedback then with a delayed feedback of .23 second. …

Carbohydrate Breakdown In Cell Walls Of Collenchyma Of Celery, Waldo S. Walker, Thomas Hoeltgen Jan 1969

Carbohydrate Breakdown In Cell Walls Of Collenchyma Of Celery, Waldo S. Walker, Thomas Hoeltgen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Celery plants (Apium graveolens L.) were placed in darkness for 18 days and the collenchyma cells of the petioles of these plants were subjected to acid hydrolysis and qualitative and quantitative analyses to determine the effect of prolonged dark treatment on the metabolism of the wall components. Chromatographic separation and spectrophotometric measurement of the amounts of sugars present after 18 days of treatment indicated a great reduction in amounts of galactose and arabinose, a smaller reduction of mannose and xylose, and no reduction of glucose. The changes reported are attributed to a possible metabolic turnover of wall materials brought about …

Chromosome Number And Pollen Size In The Genus Aristida, Donald G. Delisle Jan 1969

Chromosome Number And Pollen Size In The Genus Aristida, Donald G. Delisle

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Chromosome numbers and pollen measurements are given for sixty-four collections representing eight species in the grass genus Aristida from central and southwestern United States. Meiotic chromosome counts of N=22, 33, and 44, in A. purpurea are reported for the first time. Counts of N=11 and 22 in A. fendleriana, A. glauca, and A. wrightii, are new for these species, as are counts of N=11 for A. longiseta and A. roemeriana. The relationship of pollen size and ploidy level is examined in five taxa, and the occurrence of intraspecific polyploidy in the genus is noted.

Notes On Prairie Species In Iowa. Ii. Establishment By Sod And Seedling Transplants, Paul A. Christiansen, Roger Q. Landers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Success in establishment of prairie species was measured using sod and seedling transplants. Sod transplants, 25 cm in diameter and 10-20 cm in depth, were successful for 42 species. Fourteen species present in sod transplants set in both annual weeds and Bromus inermis sod illustrated the effect of competition on vigor. After two years, in the weedy plot, all species were present, 11 had flowered and 5 had spread. In the Bromus plot, 9 species had died, 2 had flowered and none had spread. Seedling transplants of 48 of 52 prairie species were present after overwintering. One-quart plastic bags and …

The Flora Of Iowa Revived, Lawrence J. Eilers Jan 1969

The Flora Of Iowa Revived, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Research on the flora of Iowa is being renewed by Dr. Robert F. Thorne and the author. A manual of the vascular plants of the state is planned for the near future. Some revisionary study of Iowa taxa needs to be completed first, but it is hoped that interested botanists will assist in the task. Although there are a few areas that need additional intensive collecting, the state has been quite well surveyed, floristically, and there is need to integrate the information into a usable publication.

Terraces For Erosion And Sediment Control, Dewey T. Bondurant Jan 1969

Terraces For Erosion And Sediment Control, Dewey T. Bondurant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Terracing is the only practice that we now have that will control erosion on all land slopes under the cropping systems now being used in Iowa. Current research has proved the effectiveness of terraces in controlling erosion. Developments in terraces and terrace systems, such as making the terraces parallel, use of tile outlets, and changing the cross section and method of construction, have eliminated most of the farmer's objection to farming with terraces. Terraces are effective and will be required, not only to protect erosive cropland, but also to decrease the sediment loads in the surface waters of the state.

Partial Production Of A Normal Morphological Phenocopy In The Zea Mays L. Mutant, Ramosa-1, Alan R. Orr Jan 1969

Partial Production Of A Normal Morphological Phenocopy In The Zea Mays L. Mutant, Ramosa-1, Alan R. Orr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

ZEA MAYS L. Mutant plants carrying the ramosa-1 (ra-1) gene which effects inflorescence development, were treated with aqueous solutions of several growth substances. Some plants treated with TIBA exhibited tassels with a reduced ra-1 phenotype. Several plants treated with GA produced ears showing little branching. Discussion is centered on evidence which supports the idea that hormone metabolism is part of a genetic control system governing maize inflorescence development at various stages in the pathway.
