Research In Teaching And The Development Of A Theory Of Science Teaching, R. P. Tisher
Research In Teaching And The Development Of A Theory Of Science Teaching, R. P. Tisher
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This paper outlines some of the significant aspects of research in teaching. Three phases can be distinguished in this research. They are the descriptive, the pragmatic and the eclectic-synthetic ones. The descriptive phase is characterized by the development of classroom observation schedules and the provision of sets of concepts permitting teachers and research workers to communicate about procedures. The categorization of behaviors has resulted in more attention being given to them. Hopefully, the vocabulary and concepts generated in the descriptive phase will not only aid in communicating ideas about teaching but will lead to a greater control over the process.

Calanoid Copepods From The Forest To Prairie Transition In The Itasca Park Region Of Minnesota, Phyllis J. Kingsbury
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Calanoid copepods found in a summer survey of northwestern Minnesota lakes and ponds were: Epischura lacustris, Diaptomus oregonensis, D. leptopus, D. sakatchewanensis, D. nudus, and D. siciloides. Some diaptomid species correlated with vegetational type. E. lacustris, D. oregonensis, D. saskatchewanensis were characteristic of pine hardwood and mesic deciduous forest regions while D. nudus and D. siciloides were characteristic of Oak-Savanna and prairie regions. D. leptopus was characteristic in shallow water habitats and occurred on both sides of the transitional area.

The Centralized Elementary Library: A Review Of Selected Research Of The Sixties, Allaire Hazen
Graduate Research Papers
In 1961 Douglas wrote that the primary school library was "firmly established as a necessary part of a good modern school, but in truth it does not seem to have been accepted by educators or by the taxpaying citizenry for centralized elementary library facilities and services are not commonly available to elementary students. This study intends to summarize some of the writings and research in this area and to provide a comparative analysis between selected research and current opinion by use of an opinionnaire administered to 24 librarians, 35 classroom teachers, and 11 administrators. The respondents were enrolled in summer …

The Need For Sex Education, R. J. Vanden Branden
The Need For Sex Education, R. J. Vanden Branden
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
There is no shortage of information and misinformation about sex education; however, it is difficult to determine which information is based upon more than personal bias and experience. Educators profess to educate children in those aspects of behavioral change which are based upon the needs of the students. The assumption is that if a need exists that is not otherwise being met, the schools must satisfy that need. Is sex education such a need?

How We Raise Clean, Healthy Amoeba Proteus, Eugene C. Bovee, Sandra C. Thompson, Mercedes L. Acuña
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
We so frequently use Amoeba proteus for observation and experimentation in our classes in Cell Structure and Function, and Physiological Protozoology at the University of Kansas, that it has been necessary to avoid buying the many needed cultures from any of the major biological suppliers. Consequently, we have had to devise a reasonably reliable method of our own to culture that amoeba.

Distribution Of Soils By Natural Drainage Class And By Slope Class For Iowa Counties, E. C. A. Runge, R. I. Dideriksen, F. F. Riecken
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Natural drainage class (namely, poor, imperfect, and well drained) and slope class are estimated for Iowa counties through a 2% ¼-section sample soil survey. Estimate of soil drainage class is given also by slope class. Counties vary widely in the amount of poorly drained soils. Kossuth County has 56.4% of poorly drained soils, while Allamakee has less than 1%. Land use management and conservation considerations are discussed briefly.

Splenocytes And Lymphocytes: A Study In The Rat Using The Fluorochrome Acridine Orange, N. F. Metcalf, S. P. Youngberg, W. K. Metcalf
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Single cell suspensions of lymphocytes derived from the spleen and thoracic duct of rats were labelled with the fluorochrome acridine orange, proved to be viable by tissue culture, and injected into the left ventricle of isogenic rats. No evidence for recirculation of lymphocytes from blood to thoracic duct lymph within a three hour cycle was obtained. The injected cells whether derived from the spleen or thoracic duct homed only to the tissues of the lymphomyeloid complex.
Recharge To Ground Water From The West Nishnabotna River, Randolph Stone, Lyle V. A. Sendlein
Recharge To Ground Water From The West Nishnabotna River, Randolph Stone, Lyle V. A. Sendlein
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Surface water budgets, calculated from base-flow discharge data, for several reaches of the West Nishnabotna River in Southwest Iowa, reveal two reaches with anomalously small incremental discharges. These small incremental discharges cannot be accounted for through evapotranspiration at the time of the discharge measurements nor can they be related to losses associated with shallow ground water withdrawals near the river. The small incremental discharges in the two reaches are interpreted as resulting from influent conditions at natural ground water recharge sites within each reach. The southernmost of these two sites is located near a major buried valley which may be …
Production Of A Linear Temperature Rise In An Electrical Furnace, Virgil L. Banowetz
Production Of A Linear Temperature Rise In An Electrical Furnace, Virgil L. Banowetz
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Temperature control of an electrical furnace is generally accomplished by means of a servo mechanism. For simple laboratory experiments, however, it may be desirable to control temperature by manual adjustment of power and thus avoid the expense of building a servo. A procedure is offered here for producing a linear temperature rise in an electrical furnace by a time-dependent power function, Q (t). This function is a correspondence of power needed in the heating coil (to produce the desired rate of temperature rise) vs time. A computer analyzes the characteristics of the furnace, calculates the function, and tabulates it. By …
The Effects Of Catalytic Or Promoter Oxides On The Brin Process, John L. Moriarty Jr.
The Effects Of Catalytic Or Promoter Oxides On The Brin Process, John L. Moriarty Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Future generation high altitude aircraft will require logistics independent, on-board oxygen generation systems. In an attempt to meet this challenge the eighty year old Brin Process,
BaO + ½O2 ↔ 750°C ↔ BaO2 ,
was re-examined using a laboratory breadboard model. The influence of eighteen oxides as reaction promoters was studied and the results of forty admixture experiments are evaluated. Observed behavioral trends can be explained based on geometric and electrochemical factors. An equal molar mixture of La2O3 and BaO does lower the reaction temperature about 100°C, increases the reaction rate, and improves the oxygen …
A Study Of Considerations For Choice And Use Of Copying Machines In The School Library, Robert D. Thoms
A Study Of Considerations For Choice And Use Of Copying Machines In The School Library, Robert D. Thoms
Graduate Research Papers
Shall serious consideration be given to obtaining a copier for use in the school library setting? How shall the librarian arrive at the best possible judgement as to which machine is best? Once a choice has been made, what is the best way to finance continuing use of the machine? What is proper use, in the light of present laws? What copyright changes are contemplated, and what is the best way for the librarian to adjust to them? These are all questions involved in the fundamental problem of having a masterless copying machine.
This problem will be dealt with forthrightly. …

Low Pressure Die Casting, David V. Burkholder
Low Pressure Die Casting, David V. Burkholder
Graduate Research Papers
As industry in our nation becomes more automated and more die casting is used in the formation of so many items used by industry and the consumer, it appears to this writer that knowledge of and experience in the subject area has substantial potential for enriching metal courses in our high school industrial arts program. It is the writer's opinion, arrived at through conversations with fellow instructors and a limited amount of research that there is very little being done on this subject at the high school level, mainly due to the lack of available equipment that is within the …

Book Selection Policies In Small Iowa High Schools, Phyllis R. Cook
Book Selection Policies In Small Iowa High Schools, Phyllis R. Cook
Graduate Research Papers
The central problem of this study was to attempt to determine what factors influence book selection in small Iowa high schools. The procedure followed used a systematic sampling technique and a questionnaire was mailed to librarians in schools of not more than three hundred students enrolled in the high school. Schools were selected from the Iowa Educational Directory, l 1969-1970, listing of school districts, officials, and student populations. It was hoped that at the conclusion of this study, the findings would show the sources school librarians found most valuable in filling orders: and to try and establish a pattern adopted …

The Effect Of The Cerium Concentration On The Lattice Parameter Of Cubic Cerium Tungsten Bronzes, J. J. Tully, G. J. Vogt, R. J. Reuland
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Cerium tungsten bronzes, Cex, WO3 were prepared by the high temperature, solid state reaction of CeO2, W, and WO3. The intimately mixed reactants were sealed under a vacuum in quartz ampoules and heated for not less than 100 hours at 1050°C. The lattice parameter a0 of the cubic bronzes was determined from Debye-Scherrer X-ray powder patterns. The cerium content of the bronzes x was established by isotopic dilution techniques. Cerium tungsten bronzes of cubic symmetry were found to crystallize in the range 0.070 < x < 0.186. The lattice parameter a0 was found to increase linearly with x in …

Recreational Reading In The Elementary School, Doris Fistler
Recreational Reading In The Elementary School, Doris Fistler
Graduate Research Papers
A school librarian is often called upon to talk with groups of teachers and parents, as well as to present the library program to the administration, the school board, and the community. For these talks, more concrete material than, "I think . . . ," is needed. The purpose of this project was to gain from wide and varied reading a background that would serve as source material in presenting recreational reading to the above-mentioned groups.
Literally volumes of material have been written on the subject of recreational reading, numerous research studies have been made, and general concern by the …

Metabolic Evaluation Of Preserved And Reinserted Canine Kidneys, John L. Depasquale, Alfred M. Hunt Jr., Edwin A. Mirand, Gerald P. Murphy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Twenty-four hour preservation of kidneys has been achieved without perfusion, and in some instances without oxygen in a hypothermic hyperbaric environment (Groenewald et al., 1969). These experiments were designed to evaluate the survival of the preserved kidneys and the success of the preservation techniques.
The Effect Of Diffusion And Concentration Of Responsibility On The Risky Shift Phenomenon In A Two-Choice Situation, Gene F. Smith, Thomas L. Radinsky
The Effect Of Diffusion And Concentration Of Responsibility On The Risky Shift Phenomenon In A Two-Choice Situation, Gene F. Smith, Thomas L. Radinsky
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The role of diffusion of responsibility in the production of the risky shift phenomenon was examined in a two-choice situation. Expected value of the two choices was held constant by varying payoffs inversely with their probabilities. After 100 trials alone, subjects were put into one of three conditions for the next 100 trials: Control Condition, Group Diffusion of Responsibility Condition or Group Concentration of Responsibility Condition. No significant shifts were found in any of these conditions. The Kogan and Wallach prediction that diffusion of responsibility would lead to a greater risky shift was not supported. The results were consistent with …

Children's Judgments Of Age, William R. Looft, James E. Patton, Don C. Charles, Barbara Gundelach, Kathryn Magnuson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Age judgments of human figures by children, ranging in age from 3 through 9 years, were investigated. The stimuli consisted of 4 different male figures drawn according to typical physical characteristics of the middle-aged adult, adolescent child, and infant. The figures were reproduced in 2 sizes and were matched in all possible pairings. Ss' accuracy in age judgments increased steadily over the 7 age levels. The errors of young Ss were primarily due to a figural-size response set. Older Ss made increasing use of other physical features in making their judgments. Implications of these findings were discussed with references …
