El Tiempo En La PoesíA De Machado, Mario O. Curbelo Jan 1972

El Tiempo En La PoesíA De Machado, Mario O. Curbelo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study proposes to demonstrate that time is the general emotional basis for the lyric poetry of Antonio Machado, and to point out the human quality with which it is expressed in his verses. First we examined his poetic theory to determine how the sense of time is set forth in the composition of the poem, and noted the one specific example he offers as a demonstration of said theory. Then we went on to observe in many of his verses that he indeed follow the precept he laid down in prose, and through the analysis of these poems we …

How Do You Tell The Good Guys From The Bad Guys, Ruth J. Laws Jan 1972

How Do You Tell The Good Guys From The Bad Guys, Ruth J. Laws

Iowa Journal of Communication

The cover of the November 1968 issue of Psychology Today illustrates a political candidate standing on the rear platform of a whistle-stop train. The scene appears to depict a dilemma in the political arena today. On the candidate's right is a mother lifting her baby for the politician to kiss; on his left a television camera is held up to him. Actually the contemporary candidate is faced with no conflict of decision. He swiftly moves to plant his image on the video camera.

This situation makes it apparent that the popularity of television has done more than reduce the ticket …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of A Team Approach And A Conventional Approach On Achievement In High School Biology, Paul Joslin, John Montean, John Schmitt Jan 1972

A Comparison Of The Effects Of A Team Approach And A Conventional Approach On Achievement In High School Biology, Paul Joslin, John Montean, John Schmitt

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It is very easy to come by reports in support of almost any new practice in education. Teachers would rather report favorable results and journals would rather print them. It was the many published reports enumerating the advantages of team teaching that first interested us in a team teaching experiment. At the time we started in 1964, we summarized 141 publications with team teaching in their titles. There are only a limited number of advantages and disadvantages that can be hypothesized for any particular practice. It was not surprising, therefore, to find that recent reports tend to merely reassemble what …

A Simple Machines Lab For Seventh Grade Students, Peter H. Sweedy Jan 1972

A Simple Machines Lab For Seventh Grade Students, Peter H. Sweedy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Having taught physical science for two years at the high school level, my new assignment to teach seventh grade science was met with mixed emotions. I had heard that junior high students were very energetic (mostly for mischief) and were very limited in learning ability, due to a low reading level and a lack of mathematical skills. I know I had also wondered, like many of you in high school and college teaching, just why did high school age students have such poor concepts of motion, energy, light, sound and graph interpretation and use.

New Istj Format, Robert E. Yeager Jan 1972

New Istj Format, Robert E. Yeager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The financial problems of the Iowa Academy of Science caused the Board of Directors to approve a budget for 1972-73 which decreased the support for the Iowa Science Teachers' Journal by nearly two-thirds. As a result of this austerity program it was necessary to alter the format, size and printing for Volume 9, No. 4 of the Journal. Several alternatives were considered before the ISTJ editorial board recommended a new format to the IAS Publication Committee. This issue represents the recommended and approved format which will characterize the next three issues of Volume 10 as well.

So You Want To Be An Outstanding Teacher!, Barton Philipps Jan 1972

So You Want To Be An Outstanding Teacher!, Barton Philipps

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Great teachers are great because of the long vacations, short working day, easy work (if you call it work), and good pay. WHAT? Who said that? Truly GREAT teachers rarely take a vacation and work overtime without pay, to guide the students in learning situations. And as for the pay, the garbage collectors in many areas make more than the teachers.

An Assessment Of The Differences Between High And Low Achieving Students. Final Report, Ralph Scott, Jon A. Ford

Faculty Publications

Primarily a longitudinal and quantitative analysis of achievement functioning; this experiment sought to identify factors which promote or impair the learning of individual children. The 683 Junior High students were divided into one of eight groups according to sex; race and whether their seventh grade Iowa Test of Basic Skills Composite score was above or below that expected from their Kindergarten Metropolitan Readiness Test performance. The incidence of males and females making unexpected gains (Ups) or losses (Downs) was approximately the same; but a significantly greater proportion of black children made greater than expected achievement gains. Thirty-three Up Ss were …

The Radical Pietists: Celibate Communal Societies Established In The United States Before 1820, Delburn Carpenter Jan 1972

The Radical Pietists: Celibate Communal Societies Established In The United States Before 1820, Delburn Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As a group, celibate communal societies have been the most successful communal societies in the United States. There have been many valuable studies of the celibate communal societies as individual societies. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of studies investigating their unity as a religious group, as examples of a particular phenomenon within Pietism. This study, limited to the seven earliest, celibate communal societies in the United States, has attempted to prove that the beliefs and practices of those seven societies united them as a group within Pietism similar to the unity of Pietist groups within Christianity, Bohemia Manor, the …

Petrified Lepidophloios Specimens From Iowa Coal Balls, Nancy Brotzman, Jeffry Schabilion Jan 1972

Petrified Lepidophloios Specimens From Iowa Coal Balls, Nancy Brotzman, Jeffry Schabilion

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Examination of Iowa coal balls from the Des Moines Series has yielded two petrified stern fragments assignable to the arborescent lycopod genus Lepidophloios. Details of the leaf cushions and internal stem anatomy are described and compared with similar specimens from Kansas and Illinois coal balls. In light of these observations, criteria presently used to distinguish among species of Lepidophloios are re-examined. In particular, the diagnostic features of Lepidophloios kansanus (Felix) Eggert and L. pachydermatikos Andrews & Murdy are reviewed and determine to represent ontogenetic differences. The probable conspecific nature of the above taxa results in assignment of the Iowa specimens …

Bacteriological Quality Of Lake Red Rock And The Des Moines River Between Des Moines, Iowa, And Lake Red Rock, Dean A. Hoganson, Stephen C. Elliott

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The bacteriological quality of the Des Moines River from Des Moines, Iowa, to Lake Red Rock and the lake itself were studied on eleven sampling dates from July 1969 to May 1970. The examined river sites consistently had higher EMB plate counts than sites in the lake proper and counts from both river and lake were generally far above quoted standards of water to be used for contact and non-contact water sports. The pH readings were all within quoted normal ranges. The expected effects of seasonal variation and runoff on bacteriological counts were found. Seven isolations of pathogenic, enteric bacteria …

The Effects Of Non-Solution Hypotheses On Concept Learning, Marianne Mcmanus Jan 1972

The Effects Of Non-Solution Hypotheses On Concept Learning, Marianne Mcmanus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forty-five preschool children were given 18 uncorrected trials before solving a size discrimination problem. Non-solution response choices for a particular stimulus size or position were evidenced by 71% of the subjects. Subjects who made non-solution hypothesis behaviors .on the trials before concept learning did not require significantly more blocks of trials to learn the discrimination problem than those subjects who had responded randomly. A trend was noted such that subjects who had demonstrated the most consistency in their non-solution hypothesis behavior required fewer trials to learn the discrimination problem.

Flora Of A Sand Prairie In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Glenn H. Crum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A 14.6 ha (36 acre) natural area consisting of marshes, moist to dry sandy prairie, and wet to moist swale was found 16 km (10 miles) northwest of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. An annotated flora of 280 species of vascular plants was compiled during the 1970 growing season. In addition to many species of vascular plants restricted to prairie remnants, sphagnum moss occurs in small patches in the swale. The occurrence of Carex leptalea Wahl represents the first reported collection in Iowa.

Feeding Of Black Bullheads Ictalurus Melas (Rafinesque) In Experimental Cages, Kay R. Hill Jan 1972

Feeding Of Black Bullheads Ictalurus Melas (Rafinesque) In Experimental Cages, Kay R. Hill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Black Bullheads, Ictalurus Melas (Rafinesque), were grown experimentally in two cage sizes from 25 July through 16 October, 1969. Little difference in fish growth between the two cage sizes was observed. Over 75% of total gain occurred while water temperatures were between 23 and 24°C. Better food conversion ratios were obtained when water temperature was above 23°C than when water temperature was below 23°C. Little difference in fish condition between the two cage sizes was observed. Fish were produced slightly more economically in the larger cages ($1.01/kg.) than in smaller cages ($1.05/kg.).

Winter Movement And Home Range Of White-Tailed Deer At Pilot Knob State Park, Iowa, Michael D. Zagata, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Home ranges of nine radio-equipped white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were determined during the winters of 1969-70 through 1971-72. For does and female fawns, the winter ranges varied from 145 to 307 acres, the major (longest) axes from 1.00 to 1.19 miles, and minimum daily movement from 0.78 to 1.00 mile. Home range sizes of adult does were more consistent than those of female fawns or bucks, varying from 198 to 215 acres. Their major (longest) axes ranged from 1.00 to 1.12 miles and minimum daily movement varied from 0.78 to 0.88 mile. Bucks exhibited the greatest variation in movement, …

Notes On Snail Feeding Behavior Of Anaxjunius (Drury): (Odonata), D. W. Sievers, A. C. Haman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A naiad of Anax junius (Drury), in final instar, preyed upon 47 mature snails, Helisoma trivolvis (Say), during a period of 63 clays. The feeding behavior has potential significance: (1) with respect to biological control of trematode vectoring gastropods; (2) as a mechanism for vectoring trematodes between snails and birds; and (3) in interpreting structural adaptations and perception in immature oclonates.

Spill Protection At Procter And Gamble's Iowa City Plant, H. E. Brown, W. S. Cameron, R. G. Bennett

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Procter & Gamble Company has over 30 plants and mills engaged in the production of pulp and paper, soap and detergent, a large variety of food products and toilet goods throughout the United States. One form of pollution control facility that has been or will be installed in all these plants within the next two years is spill protection. The questions arise as to what is spill protection and why is it necessary? It is necessary to protect the environment since losses of materials by industry to waterways through accidents, mis-operations of equipment, or some form of mishap cause …

The Educational Match, Daleanne Anderson Jan 1972

The Educational Match, Daleanne Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many educators are arguing that if education is to be successful, classroom teachers must be able to match the instructional material for each student with that student's level of achievement. Supposedly, providing material that is too difficult or too advanced for the student's ability can result in failure and eventually a loss of motivation. On the other hand, providing material far below the present level of achievement can lead to a similar loss of motivation. According to this line of argument one of the basic tasks facing the teacher is the proper "matching" of the curriculum to the student's capabilities. …

A Survey Of Reading Programs In Selected Junior High Schools In Six Iowa Counties, Daniel Charles Manning

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this survey was to assess the current status of junior high reading programs. Fifteen schools were randomly selected from the schools within the counties surrounding Blackhawk County. Criteria which indicated aspects of successful reading programs were selected and were subsequently used in the assessments. Particular emphasis was placed upon individualization, diagnosis, language arts integration, reading in the content areas, and on organizational structure. Visitation requests were sent, and acceptances were received from thirteen schools. During the spring term of the 1971- 1972 academic year, visitations were made. Data was obtained through teacher interview and classroom observation.

The Effect Of Preschool Experiences On The Achievement Of Kindergarten Children Enrolled In The 1971-1972 Follow Through Program In Waterloo, Iowa, David Phillip Stetson Jan 1972

The Effect Of Preschool Experiences On The Achievement Of Kindergarten Children Enrolled In The 1971-1972 Follow Through Program In Waterloo, Iowa, David Phillip Stetson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of the investigation concerned itself with the effect of preschool experiences on the achievement of the kindergarten children enrolled in the 1971-1972 Follow Through Program in Waterloo, Iowa, which used the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, model of individually prescribed instruction. The study explored the effects of preschool experience upon kindergarten males and females as contrasted to the male and female kindergarten children without preschool experience.

Two conceptual constructs gave direction and provided the rationale for this study. The first conceptual construct provided research related to early childhood education presented according to the Geneticist, Environmentalist, and the Interactionalist's positions. The second …
