Rebuilding A Tornado To See What Makes It Tick Jan 1972

Rebuilding A Tornado To See What Makes It Tick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Hurricanes can be studied from airplanes flown through them and from instruments located in their paths. But even if a meteorologist or engineer could predict the narrow path of a tornado, any instruments he might place in its path would be swept away by the force of the storm.

A Learning Activity Package Approach To Junior High School Science, Jerry Cunningham, Ross Iverson Jan 1972

A Learning Activity Package Approach To Junior High School Science, Jerry Cunningham, Ross Iverson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Our goals were to have a low-structured student centered program that made the best use of our physical facility, equipment, and teacher power. As a result, we formulated a design which included a format, procedures, and a set of materials. We feel that our design is adaptable to many situations and may provide some ideas for you. The courses we teach are exploratory. We hope to offer the student a wide variety of new experiences while developing a continuing interest in the study of science and a systematic approach to solving problems.

Building The Instructional Materials Center In The Small School, William G. Strabala Jan 1972

Building The Instructional Materials Center In The Small School, William G. Strabala

Graduate Research Papers

First, we must define what is meant by the term, Instructional Materials Center. It has been called a library, a resource center or an audiovisual center. Bruce R. Purrington's explanation seems appropriate. He likens the Instructional Materials Center to a university. A university is a collection of various schools or colleges, and the Instructional Materials Center is a collection of several libraries or resource units containing libraries of printed materials, projected materials, transmitted materials and recorded materials.

To explain the Instructional Materials Center's purpose we have to briefly look at the educational developments and demands of today. In the last …

Copepoda And Cladocera Populations Of Red Rock Reservoir, Iowa From April To November, 1970, Ronald L. Asch, Phyllis J. Kingsbury

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effects of nutrient renewal, conservation pool water level, and the average weekly discharge rate on the species composition, relative abundance, and population fluctuations of the Copepoda and Cladocera of Red Rock Reservoir were determined. The average retention time (flushing rate) was 11.2 days. Twenty-one species were identified with the dominants being Cyclops spp., Diaptomus spp., Daphnia spp., Bosmina longirostris, Moina micrura, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, and Diaphano-soma spp. Three distinct seasonal peaks in population growth were noted. Population fluctuations showed slight correlation with temperature, transparency, discharge rate, nutrient levels and no relationship was seen with water level. A time interval of …

Plankton Algae Of The Upper Des Moines River, Iowa, Barbara J. R. Gudmundson Jan 1972

Plankton Algae Of The Upper Des Moines River, Iowa, Barbara J. R. Gudmundson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sedgewick-Rafter quantitative strip counts and proportional counts of Hyrax-mounted diatom slides were made on weekly grab samples taken at one station near Boone, and every other week at four other downstream stations during 1968 and January 1969. Eleven cyanophycean taxa, six green flagellate taxa, three taxa of other pigmented flagellates, and 42 taxa of other green algae were encountered. A total of 185 diatom taxa in 33 genera were identified, 75 of which are new to Des Moines River records. Biddulphia and Thalassiosira are diatom genera new to published records in Iowa.

A Primary Mammoth Site With Associated Fauna In Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Leo Carson Davis, Ralph E. Eshelman, Jean C. Prior

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

. In August 1970, an investigation was made of the remains of a mammoth, Mammuthus cf. M. columbi, exposed west of Oakland, in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. A segment of proboscidian tusk, a lower third molar, and additional skeletal fragments were collected from the Wisconsin loess. Associated with the mammoth was a small-mammal fauna consisting of Phenacomys intermedius (heather vole), Microtus pennsylvanicus (meadow vole), and Vulpes vulpes (red fox), extant species with an area of sympatry immediately north of the Minnesota-Canadian border. This fauna, here designated the Oakland local fauna, supports cooler summers in western Iowa during Wisconsin loess deposition.

Soil Erosion In Iowa Jan 1972

Soil Erosion In Iowa

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

(Report of the Subcommittee on Soil Erosion of the Committee on Social Implications of Science of the Iowa Academy of Science)

Perhaps today's concern for, soil erosion began with the writings of Aldo Leopold a generation ago on the need for a land ethic, or the cartoons of "Ding" Darling, or the memories of fanning in the lean and mean "Dust Bowl" years, or the efforts of the Soil Conservation Service, or the professors of soil science, or the recent environmentalists. At least something, more than likely a combination of many such influences, has brought about the grass-roots realization that …

The Absorption Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Insecticides By Frog Skin, Timothy O. Kaiser, Jewett Dunham Jan 1972

The Absorption Of Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Insecticides By Frog Skin, Timothy O. Kaiser, Jewett Dunham

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The absorption of lindane, heptachlor, aldrin, dieldrin and p, p' DDT by frog skin has been studied. Various experiments indicate that water-soluble fractions of these insecticides are selectively absorbed by the skin. The relative quantities of insecticides absorbed appear to be partially related to their water solubilities. Selected studies using isolated frog skin indicate that the passage of insecticides across the skin does not alter the electrical potential difference across the skin. The observed results are discussed with respect to the accumulation of these chemicals in the tissues of the frogs.

Organizing A Community Resource File For The Imc, Janice Ann Holmes Jan 1972

Organizing A Community Resource File For The Imc, Janice Ann Holmes

Graduate Research Papers

The IMC should have a file of the resources in the community, and perhaps the surrounding area of outside persons and materials, that can be used in connection with a classroom program, Such a file located in the IJVIC would be accessible to all the professional staff in the building and be valuable to a newcomer on the staff.

A file as a guide to community resources that can be used as instructional materials should be located with the rest of the instructional materials in the IMC.

This paper presents some suggestions as how to find the community resources and …

Leadership And Language, Marvin D. Jensen Jan 1972

Leadership And Language, Marvin D. Jensen

Iowa Journal of Communication

Eric Hoffer, in his new book Reflections on the Human Condition, observes: We never say so much as when we do not quite know what we want to say. We need few words when we have something to say, but all the words in all the dictionaries will not suffice when we have nothing to say and want desperately to say it.

His words echo the desperation of a leaderless time. The central view I offer is this: the present crisis of leadership is a crisis of language--and this dual crisis is upon us from the campus to the …

A Librarian's Guide To The Use Of The Elementary School Library, Larry Lee Williams Jan 1972

A Librarian's Guide To The Use Of The Elementary School Library, Larry Lee Williams

Graduate Research Papers

One of the major purposes of the school librarian as well as of the teacher is to help students acquire knowledge. Reading, observing, telling, reporting, listening, discussing, planning, and problem solving are the essential communication skills that need to be developed. Skill in gathering and utilizing information and knowledge is required in critical thinking. These skills must be taught deliberately and practiced thoughtfully.

Library Cooperation, Myron Dean Mcgrew Jan 1972

Library Cooperation, Myron Dean Mcgrew

Graduate Research Papers

Sometimes school people feel that combining the school library and the public library in the school building should be encouraged because this will make more efficient use of school and municipal funds. The reasoning behind this lies in reducing the duplication of materials and facilities. The idea sounds fine on paper, but "unless the answer has in it something that indicates the services will be improved or increased, I doubt if the project is worth doing."
