The Quality Of Life In A Midwestern Rural Community, James E. Bodensteiner Jan 1974

The Quality Of Life In A Midwestern Rural Community, James E. Bodensteiner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is based on the following assumptions: (a) that the kind of community in which people live affects their sense of well-being, (b) that a community should provide certain qualities for its residents in order that they may enjoy an optimum quality of life, (c) that many large urban population centers are failing to provide the environment for this desired quality of life, and (d) that rural communities are and have been on the decline as population and business centers in the United States. In view of these assumptions this study attempted to discover whether the small rural community …

A Study Of The Relationship Between High School Grade Point Average And The Choice Of Library Orientation Among Uni Students, John Stephen Jenn Jan 1974

A Study Of The Relationship Between High School Grade Point Average And The Choice Of Library Orientation Among Uni Students, John Stephen Jenn

Graduate Research Papers

The basic problem under study was originally that of determining the quality of student that took Library Orientation as a freshman as UNI. The hypothesis that was tested was this: UNI as freshman were either good or poor students in high school in terms of their high school grade point averages (GPA's), and approximately equal percentages of good (greater than 3.00 GPA) and bad (under 2.25 GPA) students will be found in this majority.

Of secondary importance in this study was the collecting of statistical data on the experiential backgrounds and self-perceived character traits of the Library Orientation students as …

Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Serum Ionized And Total Calcium In Ovariectomized Rats, Edward L. Hatcher, Robert J. Simpson Jan 1974

Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Serum Ionized And Total Calcium In Ovariectomized Rats, Edward L. Hatcher, Robert J. Simpson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effects of estrogen and estrogen plus progesterone on the serum ionized calcium levels were studied in ovariectomized rats. Concentrations of total and ionized calcium were measured in the serum of rats following three- and six-day treatments with estrogen (01μg daily). Concentrations of ionized calcium in estrogen- treated ovariectomized rats were significantly higher than in controls and significantly higher values were noted in the ionized: total serum calcium ratios in estrogen treated rats as compared with controls. The addition of progesterone to the estrogen treatment procedure resulted in increased total and ionized serum calcium with the ionized values remaining …

Detection Of Isocitrate Lyase In Achlya Flagellata, Joanne Tontz Ellzey, Christina D. Chavez Jan 1974

Detection Of Isocitrate Lyase In Achlya Flagellata, Joanne Tontz Ellzey, Christina D. Chavez

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The colorimetric procedure of McFadden and Howes (1960) and the enzyme assay for isocitrate lyase (Shiio, Shiio, and McFadden, 1965) gave positive results for the presence of isocitrate lyase in Achlya flagellata oogonial cultures. This enzyme is an indicator of the glyoxylate pathway (metabolism of lipids to carbohydrates). Further work is in progress to determine if there is a correlation between isocitrate lyase and the microbodies of oogonial initials.

Upper Pennsylvanian Missourian Corals Of Iowa, J. M. Cocke, Joan Mussler Jan 1974

Upper Pennsylvanian Missourian Corals Of Iowa, J. M. Cocke, Joan Mussler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As in Kansas where distinct zonation of corals has been recognized, the dissepimental Rugosa Dibunophyllum, Neokoninckophyllum and Geyerophyllum are invariably associated with limestones and thin calcareous shale interbeds within limestone units. In both states, the nondissepimental rugose genera Lophamplexus and Stereostyllls have been collected from both limestones and thick intervening shale units. The tabulate genera Syringopora and Cladochonus are restricted to limestones in both areas. Although the vertical distribution of Iowa and Kansas dissepimental corals is similar, Iowa rocks contain fewer and generally smaller corals than correlative Kansas units. Elements of the informal dissepimental coral zones 1, 3 and 4 …

Video Tape Tutoring, J. W. Nilsson Jan 1974

Video Tape Tutoring, J. W. Nilsson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Engineering educators have long recognized that some of the technology created by engineering can be used to educate future generations of engineers. Television is a good example. There are several basic ways television can be used as an educational tool. First, it can be used to transmit information to many different locations simultaneously. Second, it can be used to transmit information instantaneously to or from remote locations. Third, it can be adapted to display instantaneously the output from both digital and analog computers. The words "simultaneously" and "instantaneously" are key words because otherwise conventional film could do the same thing. …

Megaliocrinus Johnsoni, A New Camerate Crinoid Species From Middle Pennsylvanian Rocks Of Illinois, H. L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The steinkern of a camerate crinoid found in rocks of Middle Pennsylvanian age is of considerable interest in that very few genera or species have been reported. Megaliocrinus johnsoni, new species, is from the Cherokee Group, exposed in the Collinson quarry near Milan, Rock Island County, Illinois. Internal nerve canals radiating from the chambered organ are preserved as ridges.

Significance Of Endothelial Cell Histidine Decarboxylase Activity, James R. Yarnal, Dennis F. Rolek Jan 1974

Significance Of Endothelial Cell Histidine Decarboxylase Activity, James R. Yarnal, Dennis F. Rolek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Isolated endothelial cells have been shown to have a 15-fold greater histidine decarboxylase activity than adjacent intima-media homogenates. The significance of this is discussed in regard to microcirculatory regulation and atherogenesis. The newly formed histamine is thought to play a role in microcirculatory regulation by acting on "dilator receptors" at the capillary level. The role of histamine in atherogenesis is thought to be mediated through an increased arterial wall permeability. Specifically, the increased permeability is the result of increased endothelial cell pinocytotic activity and endothelial cell contraction. These contractions eventually cause distinct gaps in the endothelium at the inter-endothelial cell …

Environment Of Deposition Of The Cedar Valley Formation In The Vicinity Of Black Hawk County, Iowa, Wayne I. Anderson, Stephen V. Wiig

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nine stratigraphic sections of the Cedar Valley Formation were studied in Black Hawk, Buchanan and Benton counties in an attempt to better interpret the environment of deposition of the formation. Key environmental criteria for the interpretation of shallow water carbonate environments were recognized in the Cedar Valley Formation in the study area. The environment of deposition of the Solon Member is interpreted as entirely subtidal. The environment of deposition of the Rapid Member ranged from shallow subtidal to intertidal. The Coralville Member is interpreted as having been deposited in an environment that ranged from very shallow subtidal to intertidal and …

Television And The Army-Mccarthy Hearing: A Mcluhanistic Approach, James Edward Sayer Jan 1974

Television And The Army-Mccarthy Hearing: A Mcluhanistic Approach, James Edward Sayer

Iowa Journal of Communication

For nearly two months during the spring of 1954, the American people witnessed a true television spectacular--the United States Army versus a United States Senator, the Army-McCarthy Hearings. It provided the first lengthy exposure of the Wisconsin Senator to the public via television, and it is not unusual, in reading either about these Hearings or about the career of Senator McCarthy, to find a contemporary history to suggest something similar to Malone and Rauch's "McCarthy's exposure of himself on television led to his downfall." Often, the reader is left to himself to decide why it was that these Hearings resulted …
