The Junior Novel: Historical And Literary Development, Criticism And A Selected Annotated Bibliography, Janet Albrecht
Graduate Research Papers
The paper is two-fold in purpose. First, it will trace the historical and literary development of the junior novel from its inception to the present. In order to augment the literary development of the junior novel, it will also present a discussion of the criticism that has been made of the genre and also provide criteria for evaluating the literary quality of individual works. Second, it will present a selective, annotated bibliography of recent junior novels that deal with specific social problems of concern to the adolescent reader of today.
Occurrence Of A Ctenacanthoid Shark Spine From The Upper Devonian Of North Central Iowa, Markes E. Johnson
Occurrence Of A Ctenacanthoid Shark Spine From The Upper Devonian Of North Central Iowa, Markes E. Johnson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although a diverse, invertebrate fauna is characteristic of the Upper Devonian, Lime Creek Formation, in north central Iowa, fossil fish remains are sparse. A detached and incomplete shark spine with ctenacanthoid features is reported and described. The specimen is the best example of the first occurrences of its kind from Devonian of Iowa. Despite some asymmetry in shape, the spine is interpreted as the cutwater of a dorsal fin. Overall length of the shark is estimated at l-l.5m.

A Comparison Of The Reading Interests Of Upper Elementary Students To The Collection At Berg Elementary Instructional Resource Center, Marsha Ketelsen
Graduate Research Papers
The primary purpose of this research paper was to show the reading interests of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students at Berg Elementary School in Newton, Iowa. The second purpose was then to compare their interests to the book and media collection found in the Instructional Resource Center. To develop these two purposes, the researcher set up seven objectives to be used as guides for this reading interest study.
1. To survey the reading interests of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students at Berg Elementary School.
2, To divide the results of this survey into grade level reports. The survey …
Paperback Books In America, Molly S. Britton
Paperback Books In America, Molly S. Britton
Graduate Research Papers
One of the facts of life for a librarian today is the paperback book. As Walter H. Kaiser stated: . . . Paperback books are rapidly assuming a greater importance in public, school and academic libraries because of their uniqueness, quality and low cost. These inherent qualities are finally creating irresistable pressures on librarians to come to terms with this revolution in publishing •••• 1 He also discusses the "need for libraries to be in tune with new trends in publishing and to respond appropriately to the exciting 2 challenge which paperbacks have presented to the profession." So it seems …

Geometry Of The Pleistocene Rock Bodies And Erosional Surfaces Around Ames, Iowa, Robert C. Palmquist, Gary Bible, L. V. A. Sendlein
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Five rock bodies and four major erosional surfaces are recognized in the subsurface; these are a lower till Kansan(?), a middle till Tazewell(?), a middle silt, an upper till (Cary), and a complexly interconnecting sand and gravel body. Erosion surfaces occur at the top of each rock body. The lower till is confined to the Squaw Buried Valley where it reaches a maximum thickness of 100 feet. The middle till averages 40 feet in thickness but ranges from 100 feet in buried valleys to absent over bedrock topographic highs. The middle silt is largely confined to the Squaw Buried Valley …

Cirrals from the base of a modern comatulid are illustrated for comparison.
The Effects Of Stimulants On The Pulse Rate, Darrell Young
The Effects Of Stimulants On The Pulse Rate, Darrell Young
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
A recent article in Science by Maugh II (1973), dealing with the possible relationship between coffee and heart disease, inspired me to develop and execute a laboratory exercise designed to measure the effects of stimulants on the body. This exercise was, of course, designed to only measure immediate short-term effects, since long-term effects are obviously more difficult to measure.

Bring The Real World Into Your Classroom, Vincent Lunetta
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Do your students enjoy working with practical problems that are "real" in their world? Have you been searching for resource materials which will encourage students to deal with practical problems in their own community? Fortunately, such materials are currently under development by the USMES project (Unified Science and Mathematics for Elementary Schools). USMES is producing interdisciplinary materials designed to stimulate students to explore relevant issues in the social as well as the natural sciences.

Take Time, Suzanne Kelly
Take Time, Suzanne Kelly
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
For several years the plea has been to individualize experiences in the classroom. Techniques in room structures (pods, movable walls, learning centers) and in teaching methods (contracts, team-teaching, open classroom concepts) attempted to set the stage for such individualization. Classrooms with permanent rows and every child on every page in every textbook on every day became known as traditional and were highly frowned upon by many educators. Teachers wanted to meet the needs of each child but were not necessarily skilled to do so.

Dr. Isaac Asimov, biochemist, science writer, and former teacher, gave the Fellows Address at the 78th Science Teachers Association of New York State Conference last year. In his presentation he defined science as an attempt to understand the rules that govern the universe, an attempt that was of no practical purpose before the 18th century. The following excerpts were reported by Virginia L. Dobson and George Hamilton, Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas.

NSTA headquarters and staff recently moved out of the NEA Building into their own home at Connecticut Avenue and S Street NW. The Georgian-style building is conveniently located downtown where public transportation is available, and parking facilities are nearby. The spacious mansion has a large conference room suitable for committee meetings. Owning its own headquarters symbolizes NSTA's ability to build an identity as an independent organization and its hope to intensify the feeling of active membership on the part of science teachers.

The Games Debaters Play: Or A New Look At The Old Machine, Steven J. Rollins
The Games Debaters Play: Or A New Look At The Old Machine, Steven J. Rollins
Iowa Journal of Communication
In 1963, R. P. Allen and J. B. Polisky wrote a letter to the Quarterly Journal of Speech which appeared under the title "The Gorgeous Debating Machine." In the letter, they satirically underscored one of the most critical problems confronting interscholastic debate: That somewhere along the line in academic debate the quest for recognition and prestige has replaced the quest for knowledge. Gorgeous, a (not so) mythical debate coach, posits that 11 [trophies] are more than symbols [of successful tournament competition] ... they are the raison d'etre of the debating machine." One should not be misled by the statement, however. …
The Suitors, A Rhymed Farce In Two Acts, Derryl Barr
The Suitors, A Rhymed Farce In Two Acts, Derryl Barr
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
l!!!, Suitors is an original two act rhymed farce that emulates but does not imitate the comedies of Plautus and Terence. Although the play retains many of the basic features native to Roman comedy, its author has modified or disregarded other features deemed less significant, according to the needs of his play. The plot of the play is concerned with the traditional young lovers of Roman comedy, Zero and Blusha, overcoming the obstacles placed between them and the realization of their love. These obstacles include: Zero's impoverishment, which is compounded by his wealthy uncle, Doctor Pomo Pena Cyllicus who, at …
