Holography: Capturing The Third Dimension, Michael Timmons Jan 1976

Holography: Capturing The Third Dimension, Michael Timmons

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Holography, the three-dimensional recording of interference patterns on film has unlimited possibilities in the fields of science, art, technology, and media. Three types of holograms, the "flat" or plane, circular, and white light, are presently being produced successfully and inexpensively in the high school situation. The novelty of holography arouses curiosity while allowing the student to experience the application of interference phenomenon.

Amoebas That Can "Blow Your Mind", Eugene C. Bovee Jan 1976

Amoebas That Can "Blow Your Mind", Eugene C. Bovee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Until the mid-1950's it was assumed by biologists and physicians that the only amoeba that endangered human comfort is the one that infects the digestive tract, causing amoebic dysentery in the susceptible and unwary tourist exposed to its more virulent varieties. Although that one, known to biologists as Entamoeba histolytica, sometimes escapes to the other parts of the body to cause sores and disturbances, it rarely causes death of its host, being a generally "well-behaved" parasite.

In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead Jan 1976

In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Often science educators feel that career education belongs in the Industrial Arts or Vocational Agriculture or Home Economics classroom but not in the Science classroom. Since Sputnik, science educators have been selling their course offerings by talking about the vast technological society in which we live and how the job market needs scientifically literate workers. Too often, however, these same educators view career education only as the production of pre-professional scientists. They seem not to include nurses, laboratory technicians and other applied fields in science vocations.

Behavior Molding, Leon Eisenberg

The planets will move as they always have whether we adopt a geocentric or heliocentric view of the heavens . . . but, the behavior of man is not independent of the theories of human behavior that men adopt.

In Defense Of Ambiguity, Eugene C. Bovee Jan 1976

In Defense Of Ambiguity, Eugene C. Bovee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

If I recall correctly, one of the first adjectives I learned as a freshman in college was ambiguous. I do not remember looking it up in any dictionary when I learned it after the first mid-term tests. It was then enough for me to learn that if a professor's test-questions were deemed "ambiguous," I could excuse my failure to answer test-questions accurately and blame the professor for having hidden from me what I should have learned and understood. In my years since, as a professor, I find that the freshmen and upper classmen and even graduate students are still sophomoric …

Lecture Versus Discussion In The Study Of Sophomore Library Skills, Sandri F. Gehrke Jan 1976

Lecture Versus Discussion In The Study Of Sophomore Library Skills, Sandri F. Gehrke

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine which method of instruction--the lecture or the small group discussion--would achieve the best learning results as far as knowledge of certain unfamiliar materials was concerned.

Specifically, the author of this research study tried to answer this questions When an instructor is teaching "selected" reference books to average-ability sophomores in an English 10 library skills unit at Fort Dodge Senior High School, Fort Dodge, Iowa, which method of instruction--the lecture or the small group discussion--will achieve the best learning results as measured by an author- constructed post-test?

In this research study the author …

Computer Assisted Determination Of The Ionization Constants Of An Unusual Dibasic Acid, George E. Knudson, Jennifer Bickel Jan 1976

Computer Assisted Determination Of The Ionization Constants Of An Unusual Dibasic Acid, George E. Knudson, Jennifer Bickel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The ionization constants for an unusual keto ester were determined by examination of the complex visible-UV absorption spectra of the monobasic salt. Interpretation of changes with pH of the spectra at four different wave lengths required an estimate of 12 molar absorbancies and two ionization constants. A computer program permitted progressive selection of best values. The ratio of K1 to K2 for this acid is exceptionally high and exceeds that for any other acid for which we have found data.

Nitrogen Metabolism In Acanthamoeba Castellanii: Amino Acid Consumption And Composition Patterns, Warren D. Dolphin Jan 1976

Nitrogen Metabolism In Acanthamoeba Castellanii: Amino Acid Consumption And Composition Patterns, Warren D. Dolphin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Quantitative analyses of the amino acids in the culture media before and after population growth demonstrate that Acanthamoeba castellanii selectively utilizes amino acids from Adam's defined medium (DM2) and Neff's optimal growth medium, but no amino acid is completely depleted during normal population growth. The cellular amino acid content varies for amoebae grown in the two media. The most common total cellular amino acids are alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, and leucine. The most common free amino acids in the intracellular pools are alanine and proline. In DM2, NH3 is produced at a rate …

Two Species Of Alethopteris From Iowa Coal Balls, Mary Ann Reihman, J. T. Schabilion Jan 1976

Two Species Of Alethopteris From Iowa Coal Balls, Mary Ann Reihman, J. T. Schabilion

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Petrified specimens of Alethopteris sullivanti (Lesquereux) Schimper and Alethopteris lesquereuxi Wagner, species of Pennsylvania seed fern leaves, were found in coal balls from the Lovilia locality in south central Iowa. The morphology and anatomy of these leaves are described and are compared with findings of previous workers (Leisman, 1960; Baxter and Willhite, 1969). It is generally accepted that Alethopteris is a foliage type of the Pennsylvania pteridosperm, Medullosa (Scott, 1899; Steidtman, 1944). Evidence cited to support this includes the attachment of seeds to Alethopteris foliage (Halle, 1927), the common association of the genus with Myeloxylon, Dolerotheca, Pachytesta, and other organ …
