Eighteen Years Of The Hawkeye Science Fair, Dean Stroud

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Pre-planning for the first Hawkeye Science Fair began in 1958 when representatives of the Iowa Medical Society, the Des Moines Register and Tribune Co., and Drake University met to discuss the feasibility of organizing to sponsor a science fair. Later, the Scanlon Medical Foundation was added to the list of sponsors. The first fair was held in the spring of 1959.

Purebred?, Wilmer J. Miller Jan 1977

Purebred?, Wilmer J. Miller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A notion of "purity" and connotations of cleanliness, neatness, stability, uniformity, worthiness and admirable values click through our mental processes. After all, that's what we learn in biology, especially the genetic section, don't we? Well, maybe it's colored a bit by the horticulturalists' and stock breeders' influence, and dog and cat fanciers who want pedigree papers and conformity to some arbitrary standard. Poultry and small pet fanciers have about the same attitude, but rely less on papers. But "purebred" is jargon--at worst meaningless in the context of conflicting usages, and contemptuous in use by a more sophisticated group--breeders or teachers …

On the first day of snow, when the attention of children is obviously distracted from normal classroom procedures, have them bundle up and go outside. Once outside, have the students follow you in a line and form a circular path. Bioassay And Corn Coleoptiles, S. Lane Wilson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the 1930s, Dr. F. W. Went and R. Bonner conducted investigations into the factors regulating cell elongation in plants and their subsequent effect on plant growth. These studies eventually led to the isolation of a plant growth hormone called auxin. Auxin was finally identified chemically as indole-3-acetic acid or IAA.

The lead article in this issue suggests that, in the near future, computer outlets may be available in many more schools in Iowa. The utilization of computers in science classrooms has been well documented. The different ways that computers can be used in science classrooms are limited only by the creative imagination of science teachers. Computers are even being used to make out examinations.

A Psycholinguistic Contrastive Analysis Of The Dialogues Between Tom Jones And Partridge And Between Don Quijote And Sancho, Betty Ann Engelkes Jan 1977

A Psycholinguistic Contrastive Analysis Of The Dialogues Between Tom Jones And Partridge And Between Don Quijote And Sancho, Betty Ann Engelkes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Henry Fielding was greatly interested in the literary works of Cervantes. This interest is reflected in Fielding's writing, especially character development and, to some extent, in his style. There are obvious similarities in thematic content in the dialogues between Tom Jones and Partridge and between Don Quijote and Sancho. There are also obvious similarities in episodes or situations involving these major characters, which are presented and discussed in this thesis. Both major characters, Tom Jones and Don Quijote, leave home to travel with their specific destinations undetermined. Both Tom Jones and Don Quijote have longings for a beautiful woman whom …

The Use, Function And Importance Of Kilgore Trout In The Novels Of Kurt Vonnegut, Junior, Rodney Drake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An essential trademark of Kurt Vonnegut's fiction is the constant cross-over of characters and settings. Both reappear again and again in the mythical universe Vonnegut has created. But it is Kilgore Trout that emerges as the most important and functional cross-over character that Vonnegut utilizes. He has attained this status because of his demonstrated significance in the three novels he appears in. First, as a supporting character in the novels God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater and Slaughterhouse-Five Trout becomes the central figure in Breakfast of Champions. He also is used as the key linking agent between the characters, plots and …

The Effects Of Two-Channel Communication And Style On Receivers’ Perceptions Of Source Credibility And Verbal Content Of A Speech, Kenneth M. Johnson Jan 1977

The Effects Of Two-Channel Communication And Style On Receivers’ Perceptions Of Source Credibility And Verbal Content Of A Speech, Kenneth M. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Communication researchers have studied the effects of two-channel communication on perceptions of a source's affective state and a source's personality. These studies have produced inconsistent results. This study investigated the effects of two-channel communication and style on perceptions of a source's credibility and verbal content of a speech. Five hypotheses were tested. (1) A speaker using a dynamic style of delivery would be perceived as a more dynamic source than when using a conversational style. (2) A speaker using a dynamic style of delivery would be perceived as a more competent source than when using a conversational style. (3) A …

A Model Design And Defense For A Needs Assessment Survey Of A Mixed Urban And Rural Elderly Population In A Midwestern State, Christopher J. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was constructed as an exploratory model design and defense for a needs assessment survey in the state of Iowa. It was determined that a need existed for the development of a comprehensive empirical instrument for a pilot study in Black Hawk County, Iowa which could be employed by the Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging (H.V.A.A.A.) and the writer. The purpose of the pilot study was: (1) to empirically test the model instrument for validity and reliability: (2) to give an analytical review of and argument for the utilization of each question used in the survey; (3) …

Classroom Analysis Of Various Plastics, Paul D. Harrington Dec 1976

Classroom Analysis Of Various Plastics, Paul D. Harrington

Graduate Research Papers

In the junior high plastics course this writer. teaches, the students display more interest in the manipulative activities of the laboratory than in the sit-down classroom activities. The results of this tend to be a once-over-lightly treatment of the technical aspects of plastics and more hands on craft type activities in the laboratory. To bring more balance to the program, an activity needs to be devised which will have more industrial relevance. Such an activity should allow the students a certain amount of freedom and still provide them with technical information and acquaint them with the properties of various plastics. …
