Immobilization Of Adult Bull Bison With Etorphine, Arnold O. Haugen, Melvin J. Swenson, Milo J. Shult, Stephen J. Petersburg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Between 1967 and 1972, 66 bison (Bison bison) (Linnaeus) bulls, 1 cow and 1 calf were dosed with the narcotic etorphine (M-99) on open range at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, Valentine, Nebraska and at Wind Cave National Park, Hot Springs, South Dakota. Etorphine administered at levels of 5 to 6.3 mcg/lb of body weight brought the animals to sternal recumbency. Underdosing was associated with long, difficult pursuit and considerable chance of not apprehending the drugged animal. Adding of methotrimeprazine (Levoprome) up to 74.88 mcg/lb of body weight to the etorphine dosages for some old bulls seemed to have no …

The Contribution Of A Media Specialist To The Teaching And Learning Program In An Elementary School, Erma Johnson Jan 1976

The Contribution Of A Media Specialist To The Teaching And Learning Program In An Elementary School, Erma Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to identify factors which can be used to persuade the Oskaloosa Community School District to hire a media specialist to serve Grant Elementary School. The question is: Does a professional media specialist make a significant contribution to the teaching and learning program in an elementary school?

The hypothesis to be tested is: Previous research results and opinions of knowledgeable experts and practitioners in the field will show that students in schools which have centralized collections staffed by a trained media specialist make greater educational gains than students in schools without access to a centralized …

Status Of Speech Education In Iowa Secondary Schools, Douglas M. Trank Jan 1976

Status Of Speech Education In Iowa Secondary Schools, Douglas M. Trank

Iowa Journal of Communication

We surveyed the speech and drama programs in Iowa for a number of reasons. First, as teachers and supervisors in an institution concerned with teacher training, development and certification, we need to know the current status of our discipline in the secondary schools to more effectively prepare future educators who will be student teaching and later looking for employment in Iowa. Secondly, in order to permit the development of more effective programs or, where necessary, initiate new programs, teachers need to know the status and scope of the programs in similar school systems. At a time when funds are getting …

Interpretation Vs Acting In Oral Interpretation, Arlie Daniel Jan 1976

Interpretation Vs Acting In Oral Interpretation, Arlie Daniel

Iowa Journal of Communication

It is a common place today to hear two individual speech events' coaches debating the question of what constitutes "oral interpretation.” This debate has continued to rage for many years, and with its continuance comes confusion not only for the coach and his student performer, but also for the novice judge (and probably many experienced judges) in these individual events tournaments and festivals. Now, if people simply want to debate this issue and don't care whether or not they arrive at some solution to the dilemma, this paper would be in vain, and I need not address myself to this …

What Good Is An Old Spear Point?, Duane C. Anderson Jan 1976

What Good Is An Old Spear Point?, Duane C. Anderson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Not long ago I came in contact with a young learner named Kelly who was fascinated by Indian artifacts. He had amassed a sizable collection and wanted to find out more about his discoveries--things like how old the items were, what they were used for, and by whom. These and other questions need to be answered, not just for Kelly, but for people of all ages who live in Iowa, for we all have a right to a knowledge of the past.

How To Recover Microfossils From Common Iowa Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson Jan 1976

How To Recover Microfossils From Common Iowa Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The rocks of Iowa contain a great abundance and variety of fossils. Megafossils, those fossils of sufficient size to be seen with the unaided eye, are abundant in many Iowa quarries and roadcuts and are therefore common in most fossil collections of Iowa teachers and students. Unknown to many, however, is the fact that the abundance and diversity of fossils in the microscopic range is equally great. This article describes techniques by which microfossils can be recovered from sedimentary rocks, illustrates and describes some common microfossils and suggest some localities for collecting samples of microfossils.

Scientific Bulb Snatching, V. G. Devonald Jan 1976

Scientific Bulb Snatching, V. G. Devonald

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The subject of plant morphology is frequently considered a boring topic by both teacher and pupil, and consequently given a somewhat inadequate treatment. Several reasons can be adduced for this unfortunate neglect of a field of knowledge which is, in fact, particularly suitable for intensive study in schools. An unnecessary restriction of teaching types (e.g., broad bean, crocus, sweet pea, etc.) may evoke bored familiarity, or the subject may be given such a superficial treatment that no morphological analysis is achieved and interest is not aroused. Often, a grossly teleological approach is adopted in teaching morphology and many unproven assumptions …

When the first March winds begin to blow, few can resist the thought of kites soaring high in the sky. Why not join students in this interest and help them learn about aerodynamics, the history of flight, the history of kites, and how and why kites fly?

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky Jan 1976

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Science Foundations program at the University of Iowa consists of a sequence of general science courses designed specifically for the non-science student. The program is unique both in course content and instructional strategy. Recognizing that student backgrounds and needs differ greatly between the science and non-science major, the Foundations program is offered as an alternative to the traditional lecture-based science courses. Whereas the lecture-based courses emphasize the recall and application of factual material, Science Foundations stresses problem- solving strategies based on laboratory experience. Consequently, practically all of a student's time is devoted to "hands-on" activity with problems in the …

Iowa - Upstep: A Program Overview, Vincent N. Lunetta Jan 1976

Iowa - Upstep: A Program Overview, Vincent N. Lunetta

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Over the past five years the program for science teacher preparation at the University of Iowa has been in the process of gradual evolution. The changes have been stimulated by a grant from the National Science Foundation, by teachers, and by science educators. Many teachers in the state of Iowa have played a major role in the development of the current program. In the current UPSTEP program the professional education sequence has become more thoroughly integrated with the student's total program and incorporates a series of clinical experiences in the schools.

Observations Of Invertebrate Drift In The Skunk River, Iowa, David W. Zimmer Jan 1976

Observations Of Invertebrate Drift In The Skunk River, Iowa, David W. Zimmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Invertebrate drift was collected weekly from four sites on the Skunk River in the summer of 1971. Drift was composed primarily of lotic insects. The composition and abundance of drift was related to predominant substrate types and water quality. There was a significant (P =.05) negative correlation between drift density and discharge at sites with sand bottom sediments, but drift density was not related to discharge at sampling areas with gravel and rubble substrates.

Decline Of Hackberry Attributed To Ambient Herbicide Drift, Robert H. Hibbs Jan 1976

Decline Of Hackberry Attributed To Ambient Herbicide Drift, Robert H. Hibbs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For several years a decline of hackberry (Celtis occidentalis L.) leading to eventual tree mortality has been evident in northwest Iowa. A search for the cause of the decline in trees in and near Odebolt, in Sac County, Iowa, has included investigation of soil abnormalities, nutrient deficiencies, pathological or viral vectors, entomological agents, climatological extremes, and physiological or environmental factors. The decline could not be attributed to any disease or insect problem. Recurring symptoms were those of herbicide damage. Indications of herbicide damage included cupped, chlorotic leaves, lack of apical dominance, enlarged …

Neochonetes Granulifer, An Explosive Opportunist From The Stull Shale (Upper Pennsylvanian) In Southwestern Iowa, Stephen Emanuel Jacobs Jan 1976

Neochonetes Granulifer, An Explosive Opportunist From The Stull Shale (Upper Pennsylvanian) In Southwestern Iowa, Stephen Emanuel Jacobs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The brachiopod Neochonetes granulifer (Owen) is inferred to be an “opportunistic species" of the Stull Shale Member, Kanwaka Formation (Upper Pennsylvanian) in southwestern Iowa. The "opportunism" of this species is restricted to Horizon B of the Stull, but this restriction is evidently masked by the abnormally high number of N.granulifer in Horizons C and D, its shells inferred to have been reworked from B. The presence of this species as an opportunist is characteristic of the high physiological stress on the community of Horizon B as evidenced by the low brachiopod (and overall) diversity. Neochonetes granulifer satisfies most of Levinton' …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1975-76, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1976

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1975-76, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Beginning in 1975, with a report on the observance of the Academy's centennial, the Annual Report took on a different format, its content consisting of the essence of committee activity rather than the detailed reports themselves. In addition, it contained such legal necessities as the minutes of the Annual Business Meeting, including election results, financial statements, constitution and bylaws revisions, and the membership roster. The Annual Report becomes, then, a running history of the Academy on a year-to-year basis. At the fall meeting of the Board of Directors in 1975 it was decided that the Annual Report be published in …

Readability Estimates Of The "Best Of The Best, 1970-75", Beverly S. Brown Jan 1976

Readability Estimates Of The "Best Of The Best, 1970-75", Beverly S. Brown

Graduate Research Papers

Booklist's "Best of the Best, 1970-75," is a recommended reading list for young adults. No readability levels are included. The Dale-Chall, the Flesch, and the Fry readability formulas were, therefore, applied to the books on this list. Each formula is based upon a 100 word sample. The number of samples varies, depending upon the formula used. The Fry formula requires the use of a graph and the Dale-Chall formula uses the Dale word list. No auxiliary devices are needed for the Flesch formula. Using these three formulas, the readability estimates for the books on this list varied as much …

Original Oratory Vs Communication, Jerry Hall Jan 1976

Original Oratory Vs Communication, Jerry Hall

Iowa Journal of Communication

Like all forensic events, oratory must begin and end with effective communication. Oratory shares with all other speech contests a general educational aim - to help you increase your personal effectiveness as a speaker and to help you understand the circumstances in which speech can benefit you and the society of which you are a part. Unless you understand that the right to speak freely entails responsibilities to other equally free men, the ability to speak effectively is without merit. The speaker who uses his ability to manipulate listeners selfishly, to deceive instead of to enlighten, to subvert instead of …

A Survey Of Factors That Influence Third Grade Children’S Leisure Reading Habits, Irene Anna Nissen

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influence elementary children's leisure reading habits.

The two hypotheses tested are:

1. Children with above average intelligence do more leisure reading.

2. Children will read more if more school time is given for leisure or voluntary reading.
