A Study Of The Nonuse Of The Humboldt Public Library By Some Fourth, Fifth, And Sixth Grade Students, Kay Muller Jan 1977

A Study Of The Nonuse Of The Humboldt Public Library By Some Fourth, Fifth, And Sixth Grade Students, Kay Muller

Graduate Research Papers

The public library is very much a part of the American scene in urban and rural communities across the nation, but it provides a service that is not used to the full extent possible. Although the library seems to be a consistently busy place, there are still many who do not make regular use of available library materials or facilities. Public libraries are not popular places with the majority of people. Contrary to the title of a well-known library film, statistics indicate that the public library is not "the hottest spot in town".

An Investigation Of Reading Interests Of Fiction For Academically Gifted Students Grades Four Through Six, Kathy Kelly Jan 1977

An Investigation Of Reading Interests Of Fiction For Academically Gifted Students Grades Four Through Six, Kathy Kelly

Graduate Research Papers

This study was concerned with how the media specialist could meet the leisure reading needs of gifted students. The specific purpose of the study was to find out what categories of fiction academically gifted students grades four through six choose to read. It was this writer's hypothesis that academically gifted students read all types of fiction on an equal basis, and there would be no variation among the types of categories that these students choose to read.

To test the hypothesis, each student with an I.Q. of 130 or above at Westridge Elementary School in Waterloo, Iowa, was given a …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1976-77, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This report continues the practice of writing a running history of the Academy on a year-to-year basis, begun in 1975. The reports of committees are kept on file in the Academy office and are not published; however, this report includes all legal necessities such as constitution and bylaw revisions, election results, and financial statements. The rest of the report covers the essence of all Academy committee activity and Board action.

Semi-Classical Approach To Inner-Shell Ionization, Jeffery K. Berkowitz, Don H. Madison Jan 1977

Semi-Classical Approach To Inner-Shell Ionization, Jeffery K. Berkowitz, Don H. Madison

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A semi-classical calculation of atomic ionization depends upon the trajectory of the projectile. In the past, it has been customary to assume that the projectile passes the atom in a straight line. We have investigated this assumption by calculating realistic trajectories for heavy projectiles scattered from Hartree-Fock atomic potentials. We have also examined the experimental procedure of correlating impact parameters with projectile scattering angles using Rutherford scattering. It was found that this procedure is inaccurate for the lower projectile energies.

Early Geological Explorations Of The Silurian System In Iowa, Markes E. Johnson Jan 1977

Early Geological Explorations Of The Silurian System In Iowa, Markes E. Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The development of geology as a scientific discipline in Iowa had an early and active history dating from pre-statehood. A high standard of geological observation mixed with pioneer ruggedness evolved from the first reconnaissance work of David Dale Owen in 1839 to the detailed, county survey work of Samuel Calvin at the turn of the century. Aspects of explorations made within this period are highlighted, particularly those with reference to the Silurian System. Strenuous journeys, rival personalities, and the influence of scientific controversy in Europe characterize the early geological explorations in Iowa.

Benthic Diatom Distribution In The Cedar River Basin, Iowa, Stephen P. Main Jan 1977

Benthic Diatom Distribution In The Cedar River Basin, Iowa, Stephen P. Main

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Counting approximately 500 diatoms from each of 16 benthic diatom samples collected 11 October 1975 from the Cedar River and its tributaries, the Shell Rock and Little Cedar Rivers, in NE Iowa has yielded 118 taxa. These waters were alkaline (160-210 ppm HCO3; pH 8.4-9.5); turbidity was negligible in the Little Cedar and rose to 40 FTU in the Cedar. The 5 most abundant taxa and their distributions were: Stephanodiscus subtilis (Van Goor) A. Cleve, more than 40% of the 2 Shell Rock samples and rare in the 4 Little Cedar samples; Cyclotella men …

Large-Scale Industrial Applications Of Solar Energy, W. C. Dickinson Jan 1977

Large-Scale Industrial Applications Of Solar Energy, W. C. Dickinson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Research on solar energy sponsored by the U.S. Research and Development Administration (ERDA), at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, has concentrated on finding and developing techniques that can be made economically competitive with fossil fuels and can be applied by industry on a large scale. The difficulty lies in making solar energy competitive, not in identifying large-scale application. Table 1 suggests the widespread need for large-scale applications.

Investigating Iowa's Weeds, Paul G. Jantzen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The term "weed" is often defined as a plant out of place. A. C. Martin has complained that this definition reflects human bias and that pest plants are out of place only with respect to man's immediate purpose. In nature's scheme, they often serve useful functions such as providing food for wildlife throughout the growing season and covering barren soil, thus preventing soil erosion. Judging from their competitive success with many so-called desirable species, they are anything but out of place.
