Stereotyped Portrayal Of The Elderly In Picture Books, Deborah J. Jackson Jan 1977

Stereotyped Portrayal Of The Elderly In Picture Books, Deborah J. Jackson

Graduate Research Papers

Studies have found that minorities have been portrayed in a stereotyped image in children's picture books. Since the elderly have been considered a minority group, this study examined the portrayal of the elderly in picture books to determine if a stereotyped image is present. Content analysis was performed on thirty-three books. A worksheet was devised which contained the four main categories main character, function or role, physical appearance, and personality descriptors. Sub-categories for each main category were also provided on the worksheet. Frequency of occurrence for each category or sub-category was then recorded on the worksheet. After the analysis was …

Iowa High School Principals’ Perceptions Of The Effect Of Collective Bargaining On Selected Teacher Behaviors, Dennis L. Webner Jan 1977

Iowa High School Principals’ Perceptions Of The Effect Of Collective Bargaining On Selected Teacher Behaviors, Dennis L. Webner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if Iowa high school principals, in the early months of the 1976-1977 contract implementation and after the negotiations of the preceding year, believed that the collective bargaining process or results affected teacher behavior. The responses of 73 randomly selected principals in Iowa indicated that, in fact, they believed collective bargaining had affected the behavior of teachers in at least nine areas. Although individual differences existed, the following behaviors, affected in the indicated manner, were generally regarded as having a positive influence on the operation of the school: 1. Aids in planning …

An Analysis Of The Concept Of Divine Right Of Kings In The Political Works Of James I, Kenneth Francis Cox Jan 1977

An Analysis Of The Concept Of Divine Right Of Kings In The Political Works Of James I, Kenneth Francis Cox

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis, An Analysis of the Concept of the Divine Right of Kings in the Political Works of James I, is a study of the theory of the divine right of kings as formulated by James Stuart (1566-1625). As King James VI of Scotland, and later as King James I of England, he was both a practitioner of kingship and a political theoretician. The thesis evaluates his theory of divine right in the context of western political thought. James succeeded to the Scottish throne in 1567 at the age of thirteen months and remained under the control of a series …

The Benziger Early Learning Assessment Test: A Study Of Predictive Validity, Marian Carol Sensor

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the predictive power of a new screening test for pre-school and kindergarten youngsters, the Benziger Early Learning Assessment (BELA). It was hypothesized that the total score attained on the BELA would significantly correlate with selected measures of first grade achievement.

Seventy-five white, middle-class students who had been involved in the norming population for the BELA were utilized in the study. The students had been administered the BELA during the spring of their kindergarten year. In January of their first grade year the final sample (N = 58) was administered the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT), and Ginn …

A Pattern Of Eolian Deposition In Northeastern Iowa, Lyle L. Davis Jan 1977

A Pattern Of Eolian Deposition In Northeastern Iowa, Lyle L. Davis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The geomorphology of the Iowan surface in northeastern Iowa has been very controversial from the earliest efforts to explain it. For about seventy-five years it was considered to be the product of a separate and unique glaciation and later as a substage of late Illinoian or early Wisconsin age. It was universally known as the Iowan Drift Area (Kay and Graham, 1941) until about twelve years ago.

A Floridean Red Alga New To Iowa: Audouinella Violacea (Kutz.) Hamel (Acrochaetiaceae, Rhodophyta), Donald R. Roeder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Audouinella violacea (Kutz.) Hamel, previously unreported from Iowa, was an important member of the epilithon in the Skunk River in central Iowa from March 1972 through January 1973. During most of the summer it was co-dominant with Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kutz. The alga was morphologically similar to the Chantransia -stage of Batrachospermum found elsewhere in Iowa. However, because mature Batrachospermum plants were never encountered in the Skunk River over a five year period, the alga …

An Innovative Instructional Unit On Manufacturing Concepts And Terminology For Junior High Industrial Arts, James K. Martin Jan 1977

An Innovative Instructional Unit On Manufacturing Concepts And Terminology For Junior High Industrial Arts, James K. Martin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Although educators recognize the need for educational experiences that provide students with a basic understanding of the industrial technologies, too often students are not receiving the "hands-on" experiences related to industry. Numerous curriculum programs have been developed to provide the teacher with the necessary instructional materials and also provide students with educational-occupational guidance for the world of work. Yet, many of these programs are not being utilized by industrial arts educators.

Research has shown that most manufacturing curricula range from one to two semesters in length. In order for the teacher to wholly adopt one of these programs, considerable organizational …

Look To The Forms: An Analysis Of Norman Mailer’S Non-Fiction, Roger Hancock Jan 1977

Look To The Forms: An Analysis Of Norman Mailer’S Non-Fiction, Roger Hancock

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"Look to the Forms" examines and establishes the common themes of four of Norman Mailer's non-fiction books: Advertisements for Myself, The Presidential Papers, Cannibals and Christians and The Armies of the Night. In these books Mailer writes of phenomena following World War II and evolves a system of metaphysics, philosophy and sociology which is existential. The whole system rests on an existential metaphysics which finally requires an existential view of life, society and art. The heart of Mailer's metaphysics is an existential God who may succeed in establishing his Vision over the universe. This God cannot act on his own; …

William Dean Howells: Realist With A Purpose, Mary O'Brien Apple Jan 1977

William Dean Howells: Realist With A Purpose, Mary O'Brien Apple

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

William Dean Howells {1837-1920), the designer, defender, and promoter of American Realistic literature, developed his theory of realism from his experiences with literature and life. When Howells was a young man, his view of life was fashioned from his reading of romantic literature. As he matured, he became convinced that literature which idealized life left its readers with illusions about life which distorted their perceptions of life and themselves. He came to believe that the function of literature must be societal in nature and must serve the moral and social purpose of providing its readers with an insight into their …

Accuracy Of Criteria Used To Determine Age Of Fox Squirrels, Richard J. Mccloskey Jan 1977

Accuracy Of Criteria Used To Determine Age Of Fox Squirrels, Richard J. Mccloskey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to determine the relative accuracy of fox squirrel (Sciurus niger rufiventer (Geoffroy) age indicators commonly used in the field and laboratory. Previous reports indicated that determination of age of squirrels by external morphological characteristics was inaccurate. Estimation of the ages of 211 squirrels indicated that the most accurate field methods were coloration and appearance of nipples of females and tail pelage and scrotal pigmentation of males. Estimating age by X-ray determination of the presence or absence of an epiphyseal line was the most accurate technique for dead specimens while change in tail …

Seasonal Variation In Weight-Length Relationships Of Largemouth Bass In A 3-Hectare Reservoir, Michael J. Vandenavyle, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lengths and weights of age 0, I, and II largemouth bass were collected during two growing seasons to evaluate seasonal trends in weight-length relationships. Average K(TL) declined significantly between August 1971 and April 1972, but significant growth in length occurred during the interval. In 1972, K(TL) increased from April to July and remained high into November. Condition was better in 1972 than in 1971 when the population density was greater. Monthly estimates of the coefficient of condition, K(TL), and weight-length regressions were both required to interpret seasonal changes. Weight-length regressions calculated over longer collection periods in which K(TL …
