Notes Concerning Delocrinus And Graffhamicrinus (Crinoidea: Inadunata), H. L. Strimple Jan 1977

Notes Concerning Delocrinus And Graffhamicrinus (Crinoidea: Inadunata), H. L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of the present study is to describe an historically important crown (cup with arms attached) of Delocrinus hemisphericus from Virgilian strata in Taylor County, Iowa, collected by C. A. White sometime during his tenure as State Geologist of Iowa (1866-1869) , and to clarify the present status of the genus Delocrinus. Several crowns of D. hemisphericus, one crown of Graffhamicrinus nodosarius (Strimple), and a divergent form described as Delocrinus elongatus n. sp. from the Virgilian of Oklahoma are illustrated. Possible phylogenies are …

The Development Of Criterion Categories For Evaluating Novels Dealing With Teen-Age Drinking, Jane Hoeppner Jan 1977

The Development Of Criterion Categories For Evaluating Novels Dealing With Teen-Age Drinking, Jane Hoeppner

Graduate Research Papers

Drinking has existed throughout time in may forms. It is only within the last few years that society has viewed alcohol use with concern as the number of teen-agers drinking and more importantly, teen-age alcoholism has increased. In order to combat these figures, many alcohol education programs are being instituted throughout the country.

Many- or these programs are based on the values clarification approach. One teaching method to this approach is the use of the novel. From research conducted, it appears that little has been done in using novels dealing with teen-age drinking. Recognizing the utility of this type of …

An Inquiry Into Tides, Darrel Hoff Jan 1977

An Inquiry Into Tides, Darrel Hoff

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Classic earth science textbooks present a rather generalized treatment of the topic of tides, but to the majority of mid-westerners the descriptions are largely without intrinsic meaning because of the lack of firsthand experience with marine tides. The suggestion contained herein provides a vicarious experience with tides for landlocked Iowans that will hopefully stimulate discussion resulting in an improved understanding of tidal phenomena.

A Comparison Of The Reading Levels Of Children’S Books And The Age/Grade Levels Assigned To Them By Reviewers, Gail G. Graham Jan 1977

A Comparison Of The Reading Levels Of Children’S Books And The Age/Grade Levels Assigned To Them By Reviewers, Gail G. Graham

Graduate Research Papers

Media specialists of today face the challenging task of obtaining appropriate materials to meet the particular needs of the school. Numerous reviewing media are available for guidance in the selection of children's books. Along with evaluative comments, age or grade level ranges are provided for specific books. In an attempt to determine whether reading levels are included in the age/grade level ranges, the readability estimates of forty selected primary books were obtained using the Spache Readability Formula and compared to the age/grade levels assigned to them by Booklist and School Library Journal. Thirty-one or 77.7 percent of the books …

Comic Book Reading Interests Of Primary Iv And Intermediate Iii Grade Students In Ames, Iowa Schools, Beverly Ann Baum

Graduate Research Papers

This research examines the reading interest in comic books of a Primary IV (term used in Ames, Iowa for Third Grade) and Intermediate III ( term used in Ames, Iowa for Sixth Grade) students. The study considered whether the sex, grade level, as well as reading ability of the students influenced the quantity and types of comics being read.

In the study three main hypotheses were tested. These hypotheses are listed as follows: 1) During a one week period, male students in the Primary IV and Intermediate III grades will read 25% more comic books than female students, 2) Students …

Bacterial And Nitrate Contamination Of Well Water In Northeast Iowa, J. L. Tjostem, J. Young, C. Hoilien, R. Elson Iverson Jan 1977

Bacterial And Nitrate Contamination Of Well Water In Northeast Iowa, J. L. Tjostem, J. Young, C. Hoilien, R. Elson Iverson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two hundred wells in the northeastern Iowa counties of Winneshiek and Allamakee were analyzed for nitrate concentration and coliform bacteria. The degree of well water contamination was found to correlate with aquifer tapped, type of well construction, and proximity to barnyards. Wells which terminated in the Galena Limestone aquifer usually showed evidences of surface pollution. Deeper wells which terminated in St. Peter Sandstone were found to produce consistently good water when cased into the sandstone. However, the water quality from a group of St. Peter Sandstone wells in which the overlying limestone was not cased out was not better than …

Error Analysis For Picard-Chebyshev Iterations, Dennis R. Steel Jan 1977

Error Analysis For Picard-Chebyshev Iterations, Dennis R. Steel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In this paper an iterative technique for solving initial value problems is presented. The technique is based on Picard iterations and the Chebyshev polynomials and has been referred to by this author as the Picard-Chebyshev iteration method for initial value problems, although no such name for it appears in the literature. Its basic strength lies in the fact that it ignores completely the standard distinction between the linear and nonlinear initial value problem and that it produces a Chebyshev series solution which is easily evaluated. Its basic weakness lies in the fact that one must assume a finite series before …

Praepholidocidaris, A New Echinoid From The Pella Formation (Mississippian) Of Iowa, T. J. Frest, H. L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Praepholidocidaris pellaensis, n. gen., n. sp., is described from basal Chesterian rocks in the vicinity of Oskaloosa and Givin, Mahaska County, Iowa. The new genus is characterized by its small number of ambulacral and interambulacral plate columns, adorally expanded ambulacra, unequal ambulacrals with perforate primary spines, and interambulacrals with primary spines only on adradial plate columns. Age relationships of the Pella Formation and the paleoecology of its echinoderm fauna are reviewed. It is concluded that the echinoderms represent an opportunistic assemblage and the bulk of the echinoderm …
