Reflections Of A Life Fellow, James Hungerford Jan 1977

Reflections Of A Life Fellow, James Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

There was a Hungerford in the first graduating class of Iowa State University. One of my grandfathers was a former Iowa College president, founder of Blue Cross, president of one of Iowa's larger hospitals and held a doctorate in Humanities. My other grandfather was a farmer and all of his five sons and two daughters were either educators or professors or farmers or combinations thereof. With these roots, I have a feeling of pride in my heritage, a deep-seated affection for the State of Iowa and an unshakable belief in the value of science and education.

The Embryonic Teacher: A Beginning Science Teacher In A Self-Paced Classroom, Kenneth W. Thompson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Most beginning science teachers enter schools in the fall with fervor and dedication. Those entering a self-paced classroom typically will find it to be a center of bustling activity with students working on a number of diverse activities. The first year of science teaching is a time of confrontation, of shock, and of conflict. The beginning science teacher must act. Out of this need to act comes a great amount of activity, some effective and some ineffective. The beginning science teacher in a self-paced classroom encounters problems because he is a first year science teacher and because there are problems …

Self-Paced Experiences: A Participant's Daily Log, Jay B. Thorniley

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As part of my educational requirements, prior to student teaching, at the University of Northern Iowa, I was required to participate in a self-paced classroom. The following is a daily log of my experiences in a class of 18 students in the course, Self-Pacing Biology Experiences (SPBE), at the Malcolm Price Laboratory School. These notes, taken over six weeks, should prove helpful to those teachers considering adoption of self-pacing programs.

The Potential Of Wild Plants As Food Resources, J. R. K. Robson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The modern world is so full of scientific wonders that we often forget to look back in history and recognize landmarks that were just as significant as the discovery of the transistor, penicillin, or the laser beam. The history of our present day food is a prime example of a phenomenon that is considered to be too mundane to be taken seriously. Yet, thousands of years ago man made a scientific discovery concerning food that made possible the growth of settlements that became our cities.

Implications Of Piaget For The Everyday Laboratory Experiences Of Children, Thomas E. Allen Jan 1977

Implications Of Piaget For The Everyday Laboratory Experiences Of Children, Thomas E. Allen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In recent years, we have seen a great increase of interest in the work of Jean Piaget. Educational psychology courses and magazines for teachers feature frequent discussions about the Swiss psychologist and his research. Such discussions, however, often dwell on his descriptions of the stages of intellectual development and the cognitive abilities characteristic of each stage. Such an emphasis on classification is unfortunate because it encourages categorization of children while diverting our attention from the more important aspects of Piaget's discoveries - Piaget has analyzed the learning difficulties of many children and how children learn and, by implication, has shown …

Annual Baby Booms : A Chi-Square Investigation, David R. Duncan, Bonnie H. Litwiller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Scientists frequently wish to determine whether an observed distribution of data is consistent with some theoretical distribution. For example, is a given set of data normally distributed, or is a given set of data "uniformly" distributed among various categories? A statistical tool for investigating these questions is the Chi-Square statistic.

Some High School Biology Electives, James H. Meyer, Robert Nelson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Cedar Falls High School, for many years, offered a science curriculum composed of traditional biology, chemistry, and physics courses. The percentage of students taking science courses began declining in the late 1960's, reaching a low of 573 students (out of approximately 1,500 students) in the 1972-73 school year. Since all science courses offered at the school were elective.it was concluded that some adjustment in course offerings was in order if a greater percentage of the student body was to be reached. As a result of the efforts of the science staff, five new biology courses were developed and subsequently introduced …

Have we, as educators, reached a point in our society where "Truth in Learning" has become as important as "Truth in Lending'? We have seen government agencies mandate controls over banks, as well as auto-mechanics, to become more accountable for their services. Now, it seems that these same controls are to be levied on those in the educational systems of this nation as well.

Parsimonious Education, Darrell D. Young Jan 1977

Parsimonious Education, Darrell D. Young

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In science, the Law of Parsimony or Occam's Razor, is a statement of economy; it expresses the view that the simplest, adequate explanation of data is preferable to a more complex interpretation of equal adequacy. The Law of Parsimony may be applied to the area of education as well. It should be the ultimate goal of education to provide the simplest, adequate explanation in communicating to parents and students phenomenon occurring in the classroom.

The Hazards Of Window Peeping, Sondra Waltz Jan 1977

The Hazards Of Window Peeping, Sondra Waltz

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When studying the development of a chick embryo by opening up an egg every few days to observe its growth, two problems arise. The first is that every egg does not begin its development at the same time or proceed at the same rate. Second, the disposal of the embryo after it has been studied (especially after taking on the appearance of a mature chick) is awkward. The psychological impact upon the child in killing the poor little chick is difficult to assess and, for some students, may even destroy the educational objectives of the whole study.

New Species Of Arrectocrinus Knapp From Southwestern Iowa And Southeastern Nebraska, Roger K. Pabian, Harrell L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

New species of Arrectocrinus Knapp from southwestern Iowa and southeastern Nebraska. Partial crowns of Arrectocrinus hopperi n.sp. show that the formerly poorly known arms of this genus are biserial and probably did not expand distalward. The Arrectocrinus range zones lowered to include the Beil Limestone Member of the Lecompton Formation (Virgilian). Possible affinities of Arrectocrinus with Erisocrinus are examined.

Trends Of Topics In Articles About Education In Selected Popular Periodicals 1971-1975 And In Selected Professional Education Journals 1970-1974, Sandra Piper

Graduate Research Papers

Each issue of eleven selected popular periodicals from 1971-1.975 was examined to determine if the same topic in education was written about in over 50% of the magazine titles in a given year thus constituting a trend. Twelve broad topics were defined. From two to five trends were present each year, with seven different topics appearing as trends. Each issue of five selected professional education journals from 1970-1974 was then examined to determine if the same trends were present a year earlier in these publications. Each topic constituted a trend each year in these journals.

Inflation And Regulation, George E. Lamp Jr. Jan 1977

Inflation And Regulation, George E. Lamp Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Traditional public utilities are regulated by one or more regulatory bodies. Rate increase requests must be submitted to and approved by the appropriate regulatory body. Such approval may take from 6 months to several years. During this period of time, inflation may increase the cost of doing business without necessarily increasing revenues by corresponding amounts, and thus further decrease earnings and/or rate of return on common stock. Ultimately, any decrease in earnings or rate of return on common stock is born by the stockholders and may affect the ability of the company to attract new outside capital for construct ion …

The Heat Of Fusion Of Ice, Walter J. Gohman Jan 1977

The Heat Of Fusion Of Ice, Walter J. Gohman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Students have learned that when heat energy is added to any substance the temperature of this substance increases and, conversely, when heat energy escapes from the substance the temperature decreases. Based upon this concept, the idea of the heat of fusion of ice does not make sense. The idea that each gram of ice a 0° C can absorb 80 calories of heat energy and become a gram of water with the temperature still 0°C does not seem logical. The student may accept the “if you say so" approach, but some meaningful laboratory data will be more convincing. The usual …

Development Of The Green Cloverworm, Plathypena Scabra (F.) , On Alfalfa And Soybean (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Jeffery J. Scott, Larry P. Pedigo

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The development of the green cloverworm , Plathypena scabra (F.), was studied under controlled laboratory conditions. First-stage larvae were placed on each host plant, and maintained in an environmental chamber. Larvae were checked daily, and the stadia recorded. Upon adult emergence, the sex was recorded. Results showed that larvae reared on soybean completed egg to adult development in a significantly shorter time than larvae reared on alfalfa. There was no significant difference between the developmental rates of the males on either alfalfa or soybean. However, there was a significant difference in female development between these two hosts.

A New Species Of Bothriocidaris (Echinoidea) From The Cincinnatian Maquoketa Group Of Iowa, Dennis R. Kolata, Harrell L. Strimple, Calvin O. Levorson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A new species of echinoid , Bothriocidaris maquoketensis, has been discovered in the Cincinnatian (Upper Ordovician) Fort Atkinson Formation, Maquoketa Group, of northeastern Iowa. The new species is characterized by two widely spaced primary perforate tubercles on opposite sides of the peripodia and by numerous paired interambulacral plates. This occurrence extends the geographic and stratigraphic range of Bothriocidaris in North America.
