Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif Jan 1978

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The concept of mainstreaming rein forces the belief that all children are capable of learning if education is individualized and attention is given to learning styles, rates of learning, and individual capabilities. It is now widely accepted that children with mild learning impairments should no longer remain segregated and confined to separate classroom situations during their entire day in school. Effective mainstreaming addresses the academic and social needs of all youngsters and functions in the least restrictive environment. The basic assumption that the large majority of handicapped children can be absorbed into regular classrooms with adjustments and adaptations in the …

The Cecropia: An Incredible Eating Machine, Linda B. Hoffman Jan 1978

The Cecropia: An Incredible Eating Machine, Linda B. Hoffman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

One of Iowa's most dramatic, native insects is the cecropia moth, Hyalophora cecropia. The larvae of this large, woodland moth feed on the leaves of native trees such as birch, maple, ash, willow, elm, apple and wild cherry (Swan and Papp, 1972). The adults are most prevalent in Iowa in late spring and early summer. In late summer the most prevalent stage is represented by large, distinctive caterpillars. In late fall, the dominant stage is the spindle-shaped, pupal cocoons found attached to the twigs of deciduous trees or in litter at base of trees.

The "Back To Basics" Movement, Threat Or Opportunity, Samuel L. Becker Jan 1978

The "Back To Basics" Movement, Threat Or Opportunity, Samuel L. Becker

Iowa Journal of Communication

The Back to Basics movement that appears to be sweeping parent-teachers associations and school boards, if not school systems, presents those of us in speech communication with both a threat and an opportunity. If, as in many communities, the “basics” are assumed to be synonymous with the three R's, the curricular and extracurricular speech communication programs in our schools are in danger. Since they are not “basic,” they are frills, easily dispensable so that more time and support can be given to reading, writing, arithmetic, and other fundamental, “academic” subjects. This would not be the first time in the history …

On Building The Profession, James F. Weaver Jan 1978

On Building The Profession, James F. Weaver

Iowa Journal of Communication

For the last five years each winter quarter I have been guest for a day in our Methods of Teaching Speech class. I have never quite decided the real reason for my annual appearance. The invitation is always issued under the guise of my talking about tournament administration or “will I say a word or two about professional organizations?'' When I seem hesitant, my colleague who teaches the class butters me up by saying that these future teachers should be exposed to my organized delivery. (Does this mean how I say it is more important than what I say?) After …

Personality Needs Of High School Debaters, Ruth Strenski,, Valerie Swarts Jan 1978

Personality Needs Of High School Debaters, Ruth Strenski,, Valerie Swarts

Iowa Journal of Communication

The Developmental Conference on Forensics has inspired this study to determine the intended and unintended effects of debate experience on personality development. One of the resolutions adopted by the conference suggests the potential value of such a study: Forensics should be viewed as humanistic education. Forensics educators should provide a wholesome, exciting learning environment in which students are encouraged to develop positive attitudes toward the worth of ideas and toward themselves, other persons, and society at large.

Patriotic Unit, Judith M. Finkelstein, Jean Kelly, Delsie Charais Foreman

Faculty Publications

The young child learns patriotism through music; art; games; and dramatic activities. Concepts in history (names; dates; events) geography; and civics are introduced through specific activities. The media are used as a source of information. Art activities; listening to original stories; musical activities; pantomime; and role playing provide opportunities for creativity development. Methods for interrelating the various subjects are detailed. Cognitive goals include: (1) the name and location of the United States; (2) why the Revolutionary War was fought; (3) the purpose of the U.S. Constitution; (4) the names of the founding fathers; (5) how life during the colonial era …

Lab Safety

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It has been argued that contact lenses offer a great deal of protection from damage by particles and chemicals in the science laboratory. According to NIOSH nothing could be further from the truth. An eye that has received a chemical splash should be irrigated with water until the material has been completely removed.

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar Jan 1978

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How should a specialized science course in high school be taught? Should it be treated as a career education course or as a general survey course? Should it follow traditional methods or should it be individualized? These questions were explored in teaching a two semester course in Human Physiology and Anatomy at Dubuque Senior High School. This course attracts students who plan a post-high school career in health oriented fields, as well as students interested in additional exploratory study that goes beyond general biology. In addition, others enroll for needed science credits. As a result, the course must service a …

Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich Jan 1978

Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Educational experiences often tend to leave children with the feeling that there is only one pathway to success. At an early age children are taught to perceive in a way consistent with an adult viewpoint. This is accomplished through repetitive conditioning during which children are taught that an adult, who possesses authority, perceives correctly. As a result, children begin to think in "acceptable" traditional modes and base their behavior on the standards and expectations of others.

Organizing A Rock And Mineral Club (Part I), Ron Bonstetter

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This is Part I of a collection of ideas designed to promote the formation of rock and mineral clubs. Such programs are appropriate for interested individuals from upper elementary grades through high school. A broad range of interests and skills are suggested to leave room for the creativity of prospective club advisors. Membership in clubs of this nature provides many opportunities for the development of interests, hobbies and careers. The desire to pursue rock and mineral studies is developed and encouraged by creating an informal setting where individuals can identify and fulfill their interests. A successful club allows its members …

Don't Just Talk About The Weather: Investigate It Statistically, Bonnie H. Litwiller, David R. Duncan

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Scientists frequently wish to determine whether the means of two sets of data differ significantly. A statistical tool for investigating such a question is the "Student t-distribution" so named because its originator, W. S. Gosset, published his findings under the pseudonym "Student". The problem considered in this paper will involve paired variates, that is, the case in which the observations in the first sample of data are paired naturally with those of the second.

Decapods Of Iowa (Part I), Gary Phillips Jan 1978

Decapods Of Iowa (Part I), Gary Phillips

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Decapods are a fascinating group of animals which inhabit most aquatic environments in Iowa. As they are secretive, their habits are not well known. However, they play an important role in Iowa's aquatic communities and are worthy of more attention by biology teachers and their students. Decapods are members of the class Crustacea, a group of arthropods with gills and heavy, crust-like exoskeletons. Crustaceans include such diverse forms as the microscopic water fleas and copepods, the larger sowbugs and amphipods and the more familiar decapods such as crayfish and river shrimp. All decapods have ten walking legs. In Iowa, decapods …
