The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Turtles, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

Strippable Coal Reserves In Twelve Southern Iowa Counties, Paul L. Garvin, Orville J. Van Eck Jan 1978

Strippable Coal Reserves In Twelve Southern Iowa Counties, Paul L. Garvin, Orville J. Van Eck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Estimates of strippable coal reserves were made for 12 counties in south-central Iowa, for the purpose of updating information regarding Iowa's coal reserve base. Strippable coal here is defined as that coal occurring in seams no less than 28 inches (71 cm) thick and beneath no more than 150 feet (46 m) of overburden. Data concerning location, depth, and thickness of coal were obtained from county reports, and coal mine and water well records on file at the Iowa Geological Survey, supplemented by information from the survey's coal drilling program. Extension of information outside known data points was made in …

The Magnetic Fraction Of Coal Fly Ash: Its Separation, Properties, And Utilization, M. J. Murtha, G. Burnet Jan 1978

The Magnetic Fraction Of Coal Fly Ash: Its Separation, Properties, And Utilization, M. J. Murtha, G. Burnet

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A laboratory-size electromagnetic device has been built to separate the high-iron magnetic fraction from coal fly ash. Fly ash, the fine particulate matter produced when pulverized coal is burned, contains an average of 18 wt. percent iron expressed as Fe2O3 found in a distinctive fraction of finely divided, dense, largely spheroidal particles of high magnetic susceptibility. Seventy to eighty percent of the iron in bituminous coal fly ash is found in this fraction which represents about 20 weight percent or 10 volume percent of the fly ash. In this work the iron-rich fraction has been characterized as …

Prediction Of Airbase Noise Contours, D. K. Holger Jan 1978

Prediction Of Airbase Noise Contours, D. K. Holger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The USAF NOISEMAP computer program predicts noise exposure contours around airbases from input information about aircraft types, operations, and flight paths. The program uses measured noise data together with standard propagation equations to compute the contribution to the sound pressure level at a given grid point for each aircraft as it flies along its flight path. All contributions are then combined to predict an overall equivalent noise exposure level, such as the day-night sound level, LDN, for each grid point. A contouring subroutine is used to produce a LDN contour map of the airbase vicinity. An experimental validation study indicates …

Occurrence Of Cranocrinus Wanner In North America, H. L. Strimple Jan 1978

Occurrence Of Cranocrinus Wanner In North America, H. L. Strimple

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The cladid inadunate genus Cranocrinus Wanner is typically from Upper Permian rocks of the Island of Timor, Indonesia, and has been reported from Lower Permian rocks of the Ural Mountains of Russia. Arendt (1970) has demonstrated that juvenile C. praestans lacks radials (is pseudomonocyclic) while adult specimens have radials (are dicyclic). Both conditions are noted for C. eximius n. sp. from Morrowan (Lower Pennsylvanian) rocks of Oklahoma and are described herein. Possible methods of feeding and respiration are considered in the discussion of Cranocrinus.

Food Habits Of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) At Big Creek Lake, Vaughn L. Paragamian Jan 1978

Food Habits Of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) At Big Creek Lake, Vaughn L. Paragamian

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Food habits of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were studied at Big Creek Lake, from 1974-76, to determine the utilization of various prey species, temporal food habits, size at which bass became piscivorous, and size of fish-food items in relation to size of bass. Stomach contents from 259 bass were examined and 75 were empty. Entomostraca and insects were important food items of young bass but a transition stage was noted at about 125 mm TL when fish became the prominent food item. Crayfish were important food items early in the spring. Bass fed mostly on 0-age Centrarchids, and particularly bluegill …

Achievement Motivation And Achievement: The Role Of Locus Of Control, Marilyn Preston, R. Michael Latta Jan 1978

Achievement Motivation And Achievement: The Role Of Locus Of Control, Marilyn Preston, R. Michael Latta

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The status of locus of control as a moderator of the relation of resultant achievement motivation to achievement was investigated for a sample of females. Locus of control was found to moderate resultant achievement motivation in predicting academic achievement for females. The conclusions to be drawn from these data are not clear since the sample of females was predominantly internal in beliefs about the control of reinforcement. The implications of the definition of internality/externality for future research on this question are discussed.

Reproductive Biology Of American Robins Following A Dutch Elm Disease Control Program, Gary D. Willson Jan 1978

Reproductive Biology Of American Robins Following A Dutch Elm Disease Control Program, Gary D. Willson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reproductive biology of the American robin (Turdus migratorius Linnaeus) was studied on the Iowa State University campus during the spring and early summer of 1977. Although the robin breeding population was below that reported for similar habitats elsewhere, it was appreciably larger than during the late 1960's when a major reduction in number of breeding robins at Iowa State followed the use of DDT. Breeding robins, as indicated by number of nests, were more numerous in 1977 than in any year during the height of the Dutch elm disease control program, 1962-70. Basic reproduction parameters such as clutch size and …

A Notable Range Extension For The Plains Pocket Mouse Perognathus Flavescens Perniger Osgood, In Iowa, James L. Christiansen, Robert C. Sanz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The known range for the plains pocket mouse, Perognathus flavescens perniger Osgood has been extended 60 miles (96 km) southeast of the easternmost known locality for this arid grassland species. The discovery of this species in the relict sand dune habitat of Muscatine County, Iowa indicates that other eastern populations may be found in similar relict areas in southeastern Iowa and western Illinois.

Counselor Perception Of The Need And Role Of Guidance Consultants In Iowa’S Area Education Agencies, Lauren Simonson Jan 1978

Counselor Perception Of The Need And Role Of Guidance Consultants In Iowa’S Area Education Agencies, Lauren Simonson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

While Area Education Agencies (AEA's) have hired consultants in many curriculum areas, few guidance consultants have, at the time of this study, been hired.

The research of literature showed that counselors, at all stages of their career, have need of consultative help. Much of this need arose from an environment in which counselors work. They needed help in reaching their potential. Guidance consultants were seen as a help in reaching this potential.

A survey of Iowa school counselors was made to determine present need and role of guidance consultants. Data was received from one-hundred sixty-four counselors (78 percent of the …

Combination Of Stained Field And Hard-Edge In Painting, Manjula Haksar Jan 1978

Combination Of Stained Field And Hard-Edge In Painting, Manjula Haksar

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

All the experiences and impressions of artists affect their work. Experiences gained by experimentation with media, environmental changes and intelligent visual growth often dictate the mode of communication. Part of my experiences have been the influence of the color, structure, and rythmic [sic] line in Indian cave frescoes. These frescoes, depicting scenes from the Jatak Tales, create an emotional and psychological impact; their sensuous movements breathe something of the warmth found in the Indian air. Their color, that of the earth, and their great linear emphasis have profoundly influenced me and are apparent in my paintings in the curves of …

Henry A. Wallace And China, Linda Eichmeyer Clarkson Jan 1978

Henry A. Wallace And China, Linda Eichmeyer Clarkson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The views of Henry A. Wallace with respect to China underwent a number of changes through the years. One constant theme ran throughout all of his references to the "Middle Kingdom," however--the importance of that nation to world peace and prosperity. Wallace publicly affirmed his support for the Chinese Nationalist Government during his diplomatic mission to Soviet Asia in 1944, but in a private report to President Roosevelt confided his true criticisms of and fears for Chiang's regime. He termed the present Kuomintang leadership "reactionary," and called upon the United States to be ready to shift its support if a …

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Marsha L. Dutkowski Jan 1978

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Marsha L. Dutkowski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The compound 6-bromo-7-hydroxy-2,2,5-trimethylchroman-4-one (1) was desired for use in a project directed toward the synthesis of two novel depsidones. Since 7-hydroxy-2,2,5-trimethylchroman-4-one (2) was readily available, a number of bromination conditions were investigated in an attempt to find a regiospecific synthesis of 1. However, mixtures of varying composition of 1, 2, 3 and 4 were obtained under all the conditions tried. Final separation of 1 and its isomer 3 was accomplished by a mixture of chromatographic techniques. Structural assignment of the two brominated products 1 and 3 was made by a combination of carbon and proton NMR.

A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis Jan 1978

A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to investigate the perceivability of emotion in esophageal speech. Specifically, the questions under study were: (1) Are naive listeners able to accurately perceive emotional intention from auditory samples of esophageal speech? (2) Are the listeners' judgments of emotion from esophageal speech made with as much confidence as similar judgments made on normal laryngeal speech? A perceptual paradigm was utilized in which listeners made emotion judgments from speech samples of one laryngeal and one esophageal speaker. Two master audiotape recordings were constructed. Each contained a listening corpus of 75 randomly distributed grammatically complete, content-constant sentences. Each audiotape …

Language Concept Development In Differentially Educated Deaf Children: The Aural/Oral Versus A Simultaneous Approach, Sheril L. Doughman Jan 1978

Language Concept Development In Differentially Educated Deaf Children: The Aural/Oral Versus A Simultaneous Approach, Sheril L. Doughman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was designed to compare the understanding of the fifty items on the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (Boehm, 1971) in three groups of eight children ranging in age from 5-3 to 11-6 years. One group consisted of deaf children who were primarily educated in the aural/oral method (AOM). This approach is said to utilize residual hearing, amplification, speech, and speechreading while signing is discouraged or forbidden. The second group consisted of deaf children who were taught in a simultaneous method approach (SM). Natural gestures, fingerspelling, facial expression, body language, and a signed language system in conjunction with …

Attitudes Of Women Toward Menopause, Cheryl L. Freitag Jan 1978

Attitudes Of Women Toward Menopause, Cheryl L. Freitag

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study explored women's attitudes toward menopause in relationship to age, education, marital status, health status, history of hysterectomy, and level of income. The 254 female subjects were reached through different clubs and organizations. The main focus of the research was on a small Iowa city. Information on the six variables was obtained through a questionnaire. The Neugarten et al. (1963) Attitude-Toward Menopause checklist was utilized to determine the subjects' attitudes toward menopause. The checklist contained 34 statements to which the subjects indicated their level of agreement by using a Likert-type scale. Directions were given in group situations with the …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson Jan 1978

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The results of the Benziger Early Learning Assessment (BELA) classification and seriation subtests previously administered to 359 white, primarily middle-class preschool and primary grade school children were analyzed to determine the degree of relationship, interaction and parallelism between these two cognitive skills across age groups of children. In addition, the existence of any sex differences in performance was examined. The 359 children were grouped into three successive age groups at six-month intervals beginning with the age of four years and six months.

Results indicated that the relationship between seriation and classification, as measured by the BELA, was positive and quite …
