President's Address: The Mission And Spirit Of The Pure Scientist, Louis Begeman Jan 1912

President's Address: The Mission And Spirit Of The Pure Scientist, Louis Begeman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Mission-Michael Faraday has been called the greatest experimental scientist of all ages. No one who has read the biography of this eminent man of science will be inclined to dispute such a statement. Faraday was interested in all phases of scientific thought but devoted his energies particularly to chemical and electrical research. It is no exaggeration to say that he created modern industrial electricity. His experimental researches covered a period of forty-four years. The mere list of the titles of his papers fills several pages in the scientific catalog published by the Royal Society.

The Salem Limestone And Its Stratigraphic Relation In Southeastern Iowa, Francis M. Van Tuyl Jan 1912

The Salem Limestone And Its Stratigraphic Relation In Southeastern Iowa, Francis M. Van Tuyl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While making a study of the Keokuk beds in southeastern Iowa during the field season of 1911, the writer was attracted by certain irregularities at the contact of those beds with the overlying strata. The Keokuk, instead of being followed always by the Warsaw, which is the normal order, was found to be succeeded above sometimes by a dense, white, fine-grained, non-fossiliferous limestone, and sometimes by a fossiliferous magnesian limestone or by an arenaceous phase into which it grades laterally.

Evidence Favoring The Radioactive Disintegration Of Sodium As An Element, F. C. Brown Jan 1912

Evidence Favoring The Radioactive Disintegration Of Sodium As An Element, F. C. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By the usual test for radioactivity, i.e., the continued ionization of a gas independent of other physical conditions, sodium as an element does not display any activity that is definitely greater than that found in all matter. And the ionizing activity of ordinary matter is so slight that it cannot be stated with definiteness whether or not the matter is of itself radioactive. But radioactivity implies a more fundamental change than that of emitting matter and energy continuously. It implies an atomis disintegration. If α particles are emitted the atoms go by leaps and bounds to new atoms of other …

Charter Members Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, L. H. Parmmel Jan 1912

Charter Members Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, L. H. Parmmel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two charter members of the Academy, Dr. Samuel Calvin and Professor J. E. Todd, were primarily geologists, both, however, had such good training in the old natural history courses given in our colleges forty and fifty years ago, that they became all-round naturalists. In the early days of teaching science in Iowa, when they did their pioneer work, they had the whole range of scientific instruction along the lines of natural history and natural science. In late years Dr. Calvin was primarily a geologist, never, however, losing interest in natural history. Several biographical sketches of the late Dr. Calvin have …

History Of Geology In Iowa For The Last Twenty-Five Years, Melvin F. Arey Jan 1912

History Of Geology In Iowa For The Last Twenty-Five Years, Melvin F. Arey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is so broad and full a subject that the necessary limitation of time and space will compel its treatment in a somewhat bald and meager manner. It is fitting that there should be given at the outset a brief statement of what had been accomplished previous to 1886-7. In 1839 Dr. D.D. Owen organized a corps of observers with whom he made a reconnaissance of portions of Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois, the results of which were published in 1840 as a part of the senate documents. Several years later he revisited the state and the fruits of his survey …

The Progress In Physics In Iowa In The Quarter Century, Frank F. Almy Jan 1912

The Progress In Physics In Iowa In The Quarter Century, Frank F. Almy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In attempting to outline the progress in Physics in the State of Iowa since the organization of the Iowa Academy of Sciences, it may be advisable to begin with some statement of the status of that subject in the State at that time. Note that this was six years before the writer, now selected as the patriarch of his group, entered the ranks of teachers of Physics in the State. I can hardly appropriate the term physicists, for, in the main, our work has been administrative and pedagogical.

The Late Blight Of Barley (Helminthosporium Teres Sacc.), A. L. Bakke Jan 1912

The Late Blight Of Barley (Helminthosporium Teres Sacc.), A. L. Bakke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

To the barley grower, no other disease of the barley is probably of such economic importance as the late blight (Helminthosporium teres). When active work was begun in the summer of 1909, certain barley plots of the college showed that more than 90 per cent of the plants in those plots were infected. The disease presents itself in the form of brownish, orange colored spots, which at first are oval or circular, but later become elongated. As a result of infection, the greater surface of the leaves takes on a yellowish color. In contrast to this effect is the brick …

A New Apparatus For Measuring Small Intervals Of Time Independent Of Clock Or Chronograph, F. C. Brown Jan 1912

A New Apparatus For Measuring Small Intervals Of Time Independent Of Clock Or Chronograph, F. C. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the Physical Review for June, 1912, the author discusses the theory of an electrical method for measuring small intervals of time. Time is measured in terms of the throw of a ballistic galvanometer, which is in the circuit of a Wheatstone's bridge during the interval.

Anniversary Address Iowa Academy Of Science, Herbert Osborn Jan 1912

Anniversary Address Iowa Academy Of Science, Herbert Osborn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There is an old and familiar phrase which reads: To all to whom these presents may come, greeting. I remember how in youthful days this phrase struck me as of peculiar mold and how, without perhaps realizing its antiquity or history. I puzzled as to its full significance and the condition which in some distant era must have given it birth. We need not now attempt to trace its lineage or discover how ancient ambassadors or messengers may have used it in their visits to friend or foe, but I like to fancy for the moment that I am commissioned …

Illuminating Engineering - A New Profession, Arthur H. Ford Jan 1911

Illuminating Engineering - A New Profession, Arthur H. Ford

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the time of the cave dwellers men have found artificial illumination a convenience if not a necessity; but only within the present century has the design of illumination system been considered for such importance as to become a special branch of engineering. In fact the first American college course bearing the name illumination was planned and taught by the writer in 1901. This was given at the University of Colorado and occupied two periods a week for a semester. The profession is so new that it is not mentioned in even the most recent dictionaries; so it is thought …

The Action Of Epinephrin Upon The Muscle Tissue Of The Vein, J. T. M'Clintock Jan 1911

The Action Of Epinephrin Upon The Muscle Tissue Of The Vein, J. T. M'Clintock

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The physiology of the venous circulation has, in comparison to that of the arterial, received very little consideration. It has been looked upon as a circulation carried on in a system of inert, elastic tubes, carrying the blood back to the heart from the periphery and without much, if any, physiological action on the part of the venous wall in the process. We are in the habit of looking to the heart, the arterial tension and the skeletal muscle action as being the forces driving the blood through the venous system.

Despositional Phases Of Eolation Under The Stimulus Aridity, Charles R. Keyes Jan 1911

Despositional Phases Of Eolation Under The Stimulus Aridity, Charles R. Keyes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is now a question whether wind-scour under the stimulus of a typically arid climate is not actually the most potent and persistent of the erosive agencies. Under favorable conditions its general efficiency must greatly exceed that of stream-action in normally moist lands. At any rate, erosionally, its world's work is probably surpassed neither by that of hydrasion nor of glaciation.

The Use Of A Ballistic Galvanometer And Pendulum For Measuring Rapidly Fluctuating Resistances, W. H. Clark Jan 1911

The Use Of A Ballistic Galvanometer And Pendulum For Measuring Rapidly Fluctuating Resistances, W. H. Clark

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The degree of accuracy with which physicists have divided the fundamental units of length and mass, the centimeter and the gram, demands a division equally as accurate of the remaining unit, the unit of time. We are all familiar with Michelson's measurement of the standard meter where a half and a quarter wave length of light was a quantity not to be neglected. Our recent literature describes a balance which will weigh to one millionth of a milligram. When we consider these facts and the added fact that time so often enters into our formulae to the second degree we …

Concerning A Study Of Kerosene Oils By Physical Methods, G. W. Stewart Jan 1910

Concerning A Study Of Kerosene Oils By Physical Methods, G. W. Stewart

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Kerosene oil has been the subject of investigation for a number of years, and with the result of improved processes in refining and an illuminant which fulfills a definite need quite satisfactorily. But these investigations have been conducted almost wholly from the point of view of the chemist. This is really not surprising when the complex character of the oils and the necessarily very complex character of the chemical changes in the burning flame are considered. To secure any practical results by physical methods seems at first sight to be hopeless, for does not the illuminating power of the oils …
