Tectonic Influences On The Evolution Of Settlement Decisions In The Near East, Truett Koden W. Marr Jun 2026

Tectonic Influences On The Evolution Of Settlement Decisions In The Near East, Truett Koden W. Marr

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This study asks a fundamental question in archaeology: why do people consistently choose certain places to settle over others? Focusing on the Near East, it investigates how deep-time tectonic features, specifically fault systems, structure long-term settlement decisions by shaping water availability and ecological productivity. To address this, I integrate a large geospatial dataset of 1,023 archaeological sites with 9,075 mapped fault traces across 674 hydrological basins. Using statistics in R, I apply Poisson generalized linear models to test basin-level relationships between site density and fault density and conduct distance-to-fault analyses comparing archaeological sites to randomized controls. These analyses are further …

1 Billion Birds Lost: Mechanisms Of Window Collisions And Possible Mitigation Strategies At Lawrence University, Shoshana Schmit Jun 2026

1 Billion Birds Lost: Mechanisms Of Window Collisions And Possible Mitigation Strategies At Lawrence University, Shoshana Schmit

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Windows are currently the largest killer of birds on the planet, with an estimated 1 billion birds dying from collisions annually. If birds that hit windows do not die on impact, they may either die elsewhere shortly afterwards, resulting in the number of carcasses at collision sites being a conservative estimate of the actual number of fatalities. During the day, proximity to foraging sites and reflectivity play crucial roles in the danger of windows, and during the night, artificial illumination emitting from windows disorients and inhibits navigational cues. To explore this topic on campus, I documented bird collisions at Lawrence …

This pilot study looks at how previous research lines up and does not line up with teachers in Wisconsin. The survey results explore the common denominators and disagreements found within the answers. This research and resulting paper examines current research, identifies what aligns with the practices of choral educators, who …

Napoleon Iii, Bimetallism, And The Latin Monetary Union In The European Movement For Universal Coinage, 1865-1878, Jack Salerno Jun 2026

Napoleon Iii, Bimetallism, And The Latin Monetary Union In The European Movement For Universal Coinage, 1865-1878, Jack Salerno

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Between 1865 and 1878, Emperor Napoleon III of France attempted to use the Latin Monetary Union (LMU) to attain power via a universal, bimetallic European coinage system, but ultimately failed due to the preference for the gold standard within the wider movement for a universal coinage. In my research, I examine the International Monetary Conferences of 1865 and 1867, and explore the political landscape of France in the years leading up to the creation of the LMU, focusing on the Napoleonic echoes of the Second French Empire as instrumental factors in the LMU’s design. I argue that Napoleon III’s Empire …

Investigating Femoral Growth Stunting And Cortical Bone Deposition: A Bioarchaeological Case Study From 17th Century Transylvania, S. M. August Stone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This study utilizes the World Health Organization’s growth stunting identification standards to investigate the possibility of growth stunting in a collection of subadult remains from Telekfalva, Transylvania, Romania. Length-for-age is estimated using femur length and dental development stage (Shaefer et al., 2009) and compared to the Maresh Standard Growth Data (Maresh, 1943, 1955, 1970). Growth stunting is identified in individuals who fall less than -two standard deviations from the expected femur length-for-age. Additionally, this research investigates a pattern of abnormal, multilayered cortical bone deposition seen primarily in individuals with growth stunting. The correlation between abnormal cortical bone deposition and growth …

Bouillean - Ai Recipe Model, George Mouratoff, Hanol Yang, Helen Wang, Sebastian Verbinski Jun 2026

Bouillean - Ai Recipe Model, George Mouratoff, Hanol Yang, Helen Wang, Sebastian Verbinski

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

AI generated food recipes are the second most desired AI innovation, however relatively few commercial systems exist to fill this niche. This is because while the solution is highly desired, cooking shouldn’t be approached with the same method by most LLMs and standard AIs. The leading models struggle to solve the issue of generating a semantically clear recipe while maintaining memory of the recipe status between steps. This is before we can even attempt to solve the flavor problem.

Cooking represents a unique challenge for AI, since it requires minimal loss in memory alongside already high quality text generation making …

Previous brain-wide association studies (BWAS) have linked specific environmental and behavioral variables to brain variability. In this work, we mapped 649 variables to children's brains and compared the resultant BWAS maps with each other and with neurobiological reference patterns. Socioeconomic status (SES) showed the strongest brain-wide associations. The SES associations were strongest in motor and sensory but not cognitive regions, a pattern shared across many BWAS maps, including intelligence quotient (IQ). A single, common BWAS brain pattern existed across variables that was most reflective of a child's socioeconomics. Adjusting for SES weakened brain-IQ associations, eliminating the BWAS motor and sensory …

Mixed-Signal Intergrated Circuit Design And Fabrication, Jack Demeulemeester, Aris Ozark, Alan Rieger

Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses

Integrated circuit design is a key aspect of the quickly-growing semiconductor industry. Familiarity with high-level design, layout, and validation is critical for students seeking an industrial or academic career in the field. Learning full-stack design at an academic institution is made difficult by the amount of resources required and limited timeframe. In this project, we develop a thermometer-coded digital-to-analog converter from concept to fabrication as a means to create a new integrated circuit design and fabrication course at Santa Clara University. We also develop a design flow using software from Cadence Design Systems and the 250 nm CMOS process node …

Community Forest Management And Its Impacts On Ecosystem Services And Livelihoods In Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam, Nguyen Ngoc Lan Chi, Le Thi Hoa Sen, Ho Le Phi Khanh, Guilhem Saget, Jennifer Bond

Forest and Society

This study explores the implementation of Community Forest Management (CFM) and its impacts on ecosystem services and the local livelihoods in Thua Thien Hue province. Through interviews with CFM households, non-CFM households and local representatives, it found that although CFM contributes positively to the enhancement of ecosystem services, limitations remain. Specifically, CFM payments only account for up to 10% of households' income and therefore activities such as patrolling tend to be left to older, non-earning household members. The study also found evidence of `reverse exclusion' where limiting CFM participation to poor households also limited the capacity of the group to …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

Electronic resources are now essential for teaching, learning, research and dissemination of knowledge in higher institutions of learning. Although many universities have invested heavily in digital collections, databases, electronic journals, electronic books, institutional repositories, and online reference services, the use of these resources is not as high as expected in many universities, especially in developing countries. Low awareness, lack of information literacy skills, limited technological infrastructure, poor internet connectivity, lack of training, and weak institutional support continue to impede the effective use of electronic resources. This is a review paper that explores the current state of electronic resource utilization …

Defining Replication-Driven Vulnerabilities In High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancers, Natasha Maya Ramakrishnan Jun 2026

Defining Replication-Driven Vulnerabilities In High Grade Serous Ovarian Cancers, Natasha Maya Ramakrishnan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

High grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is an aggressive, highly lethal subtype of ovarian cancer. These cancers are typically diagnosed in later stages and are associated with poor patient prognosis. Additionally, HGSOC is characterized by numerous markers of genomic instability and defects in DNA repair pathways, vulnerabilities which have been exploited by the advancement of chemotherapy. Despite these clinical advancements, HGSOC remains a significant therapeutic challenge due to emergence of chemoresistance and limited targeted treatment options. Taken together, these factors highlight an ongoing need to study the development of HGSOC and its progression to identify more effective treatment opportunities. We …

Metal Oxide Nanoparticle‑Integrated Phema Hydrogels: Morphology, Chemical Properties, And Biological Interaction, Venkateswar Rao, Collin Cox, Brandon Clark, Arushi Rai, Erick S. Vasquez-Guardado, Madhuri Kango-Singh, Soubantika Palchoudhury

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Hydrogels offer attractive matrices for incorporating inorganic metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) to generate multifunctional hybrid materials, but challenges remain in scalable synthesis and correlating their properties to bio-interaction. Therefore, we report the synthesis and characterization of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) hydrogels, and pHEMA hydrogels encapsulating iron oxide or zinc oxide NPs, using a modified free-radical polymerization. Dose-dependent survivorship studies on Drosophila melanogaster revealed that both NP-embedded hydrogels are tolerated over a wide dose range (e.g., 50–200 mg), although ZnO NP-gels exhibit lower survivorship at some concentrations due to their inherent composition and a wider size distribution of iron oxide NPs.

The Multimodal Video Evaluator (Mve): Codifying Decades Of Empirical Research Into A Systematic Multimedia Design & Evaluation Framework, Koichi Sato

Teaching & Learning with AI

Online higher education relies heavily on instructional videos, yet many faculty-produced media assets inadvertently induce high extraneous cognitive load. Instructional designers frequently face an “expert bottleneck,” lacking the operational bandwidth required to conduct manual, frame-by-frame pedagogical audits across expanding institutional media catalogs. To bridge this research-practice gap, this paper presents an operational blueprint for the Multimodal Video Evaluator (MVE), an open-access, AI-driven workflow designed to automate multimedia quality assurance. Built on a native multimodal artificial intelligence architecture, the MVE concurrently processes visual, auditory, and textual streams to evaluate media assets against 127 research-derived design guidelines rooted in the Cognitive Theory …

The Case For Ice Rises At Ross Bank Since The Middle Miocene, William Weber Jun 2026

The Case For Ice Rises At Ross Bank Since The Middle Miocene, William Weber

LSU Master's Theses

Many tens of ice rises exist at the marine margins of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Isle-type ice rises in particular are those where an ice shelf is pinned to an underlying submarine bank. Recent and ongoing studies show that Ross Bank, on the middle continental shelf of central Ross Sea, was the former site of an important Ross Ice Shelf ice rise during the advance and retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) in the last glacial cycle. Ross Bank is a broad and anomalously shallow water platform whose crest rises to 170 m water depth. Despite their importance …

Uniform Stability Of Katyusha In Strongly-Convex Settings, Don Li Jun 2026

Uniform Stability Of Katyusha In Strongly-Convex Settings, Don Li

University Honors Theses

Acceleration of convergence and reduction of variance constitute a trade-off in the design of stochastic optimization machine learning algorithms. Katyusha was introduced to address this trade-off, synthesizing Nesterov Accelerated Gradient (NAG) and Stochastic Variance-Reduced Gradient (SVRG) into a single first-order optimizer with promising empirical performance. However, the generalization properties of Katyusha remain largely unexplored. We conjecture that, in the smooth quadratic regime (i.e., under assumptions of strong convexity and smoothness of the loss function, and boundedness of gradients), Katyusha is uniformly stable in the sense of Bousquet and Elisseeff. Instantiating our framework for NAG, we extend the use of Lyapunov …

Person-Centered Profiles Of Body Image (Dis)Satisfaction Among Adolescents And Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes, Adora Elise Choquette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are uniquely vulnerable to body image dissatisfaction due to a complex interplay of pre-existing psychosocial risk factors and health demands necessitated by T1D care. These individual-level risk factors lend to high degrees of heterogeneity in body image (dis)satisfaction. Given that body image dissatisfaction heightens the risk of disordered eating behaviors and subsequent adverse diabetes-related outcomes, it is important to understand antecedents of body image dissatisfaction in individuals with T1D to inform care. The present study included a sample of adolescents and young adults (AYA) ages 13-35 with T1D (N=891, Mage=21.14 years (SDage=6.03 years), 57.8% …

A Parallelized Multi-Component Radiation Testing Methodology For Systems-On-Chip, Weston M. Smith Jun 2026

A Parallelized Multi-Component Radiation Testing Methodology For Systems-On-Chip, Weston M. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

As the space industry expands, there is an increased reliance on system on chip (SoC) devices in high radiation environments. The reliability of these devices becomes crucial, especially in space applications. The industry's rapid growth has led to a massive expansion in the use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components. Electronic systems are vulnerable to single event upsets (SEUs) and the failure modes caused by SEUs are not fully understood, especially for COTS SoCs. Standard radiation testing techniques of SEUs use a single core of a multi-core processor to monitor bit flips. In this work, we present a parallelized radiation testing …
