Some Recent Discoveries Concerning The Behavior Of Platinum-Iridium Wires, L. P. Sieg Jan 1910

Some Recent Discoveries Concerning The Behavior Of Platinum-Iridium Wires, L. P. Sieg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The remarkable elastic properties of a certain platinum-iridium wire containing 40 per cent of iridium were first announced by Guthe. In his experiments the wire was used as the suspension of a torsion pendulum. Although the amplitudes of vibration were less than 50 degrees, a marked increase both in the period and in the logarithmic decrement accompanied the increase in the amplitude. Cylinders of equal mass but of different moments of inertia were suspended from the wire, set in vibration, and timed, but as a result of these experiments no change was observed in the logarithmic decrement-amplitude curves. This absence …

Historical Sketch Of Early Health Regulations In Iowa, L. S. Ross Jan 1910

Historical Sketch Of Early Health Regulations In Iowa, L. S. Ross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The immediate cause for the establishment of rules and regulations to protect the health of a municipality or a state, often is the fear of the introduction of some disease that is foreign to the community. Possibly some other disease is common to a community, its effects, even its ravages are matters of common knowledge, but because of that familiarity its presence is expected; the people are accustomed to it. In reality somewhat of a fatalism with reference to it is established, and no rigorous measures are taken against it for defense or for elimination. It seems we fear the …

Studies In The Solubility Of Portland Cement Continued From 1908, G. G. Wheat

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the year 1908 we presented a brief paper before the Academy of Science, calling attention to certain uses of Portland cement concrete for farm drainage and city sewer purposes and in that connection raised the question of the fitness of the material for the use made of it. The importance of the question has greatly increased, as the spirit of improvement and progress is running like wildfire over our state.

The Googler Primary Battery, Harry Ray Woodrow Jan 1909

The Googler Primary Battery, Harry Ray Woodrow

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The cell furnished us by the Battery Company was of the two fluid type. The exciter was sulphuric acid and zinc and the depolarizer was principally nitric acid. It resembled very much the G roove and Bunsen cells but differed in the depolarizer, which contained ferric sulphate. The carbon was placed inside the porous cup surrounded by 450 c. c. of the depolarizer. Outside this was 2,000 c. c. of sulphuric acid and a round cylinder of zinc. The mercury served the purpose of keeping the zinc amalgamated and also in making contact with the external circuit.

Some Features Of Iowa Ground Waters, Ii, W. S. Hendrixson Jan 1909

Some Features Of Iowa Ground Waters, Ii, W. S. Hendrixson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

About two years ago the writer read before this body a paper, under the above title, giving a general statement of his work on the quality of Iowa well waters. The accumulating experience of the past two years seems to justify at this time a statement of some additional facts that seem important and which may be of interest to the Iowa Academy of Science.

Orotaxial Geologic Correlation And Diastrophism, Charles R. Keyes Jan 1909

Orotaxial Geologic Correlation And Diastrophism, Charles R. Keyes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Exact stratigraphic correlation is today bothering the geologist more than any other subject relating to earth knowledge. This phase of geology has, indeed, been a constant source of embarrassment ever since the science's birth more than a century and a half ago. A hundred years ago William Smith, an English engineer, discovered the use of organic remains in the determination of the relative ages of rocks; and since his time fossils have been very generally depended upon in unravelling the geologic history of the various parts of the globe.

The Fruit Of Viburnum Nudum, Robert H. Lott, Nicholas Knight Jan 1909

The Fruit Of Viburnum Nudum, Robert H. Lott, Nicholas Knight

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fruit of Viburnum Nudum was gathered in the swampy portions of the territory around Sylvan Beach, N. Y., on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake, August 27th to September 5, 1907. The territory was formerly the lake bottom, at the time when the water was discharged into the Mohawk River. An elevation of the land took place, the lake was projected farther north, and the water now reaches Lake Ontario through the Oneida and Oswego rivers. The soil of the Sylvan Beach territory is almost a pure sand, unadapted to agricultural purposes.

The Action Of Manure On A Certain Iowa Soil, E. B. Watson Jan 1909

The Action Of Manure On A Certain Iowa Soil, E. B. Watson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The soil on which these studies were made was Southern Iowa loess from the experiment field in Decatur County, Iowa. It is a fine loess soil containing considerable clay with the silt, and enough organic matter in the surface to make it dark brown. This loess differs from that of both eastern and western Iowa in its color, which is grey rather than yellow. It is the prevailing type of soil in southern Iowa. The field from which the sample was taken had been in cultivation thirty or forty years, and in that time had probably produced no clover crops. …

Notes On The Histological Structure And Specific Gravity Of The Seeds Of Pyrus, L. H. Pammel, Luella Robb Jan 1908

Notes On The Histological Structure And Specific Gravity Of The Seeds Of Pyrus, L. H. Pammel, Luella Robb

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A number of investigators have made a careful study of the seeds of the common quince (Pyrus vulgaris), largely because of its use in connection with medicine and the interest attached to the mucilaginous character of the epidermal cell walls of the outer seed coat. Little attention, however, has been paid to the structure of the seeds of the common apple. Kratzman, Vinton and Moeller, Hill, and Harz call attention to the structure of the testa.

Some Peculiarities In The Elastic Properties Of Certain Substances, K. E. Guthe Jan 1908

Some Peculiarities In The Elastic Properties Of Certain Substances, K. E. Guthe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

All solids deviate more or less from the theoretical perfectly elastic body and though many experiments have been undertaken in order to explain these deviations, we can hardly claim that any of the numerous theories proposed by the different investigators has yet cleared up the intricate relations involved.

President's Address - Science Required For A General Education, John L. Tilton Jan 1908

President's Address - Science Required For A General Education, John L. Tilton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At first I thought that for this occasion I would prepare a paper on one of the important lines of recent scientific discussion. After the kind acceptance by Professor Chamberlin of our invitation to address us this evening I gave up all intention of preparing a paper, thinking that the address which we are about to hear would render the presentation of a related subject by me undesirable; but when I found that the omission of a paper styled the "Presidential Address" would be considered an unacceptable "innovation , " I immediately decided to present briefly a pedagogical question which …

The Genesis Of Loess: A Problem In Plant Ecology, B. Shimek Jan 1908

The Genesis Of Loess: A Problem In Plant Ecology, B. Shimek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The question of the origin of the loess of the Mississippi valley has attracted the attention of the geologists of the country for two-thirds of a century. The consideration of the question has been left almost entirely to geologists, who have offered various explanations of loess-formation, all based practically on physical grounds.

The Loess Of The Paha And River-Ridge, B. Shimek Jan 1908

The Loess Of The Paha And River-Ridge, B. Shimek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The term paha was first applied to isolated knobs and ridges within what we now know as the Iowan drift border by McGee, who refers to them as "loess-capped eminences, sometimes elongated to ridges miles in length, sometimes shortened to elliptical hills," and again describes the individual paha as an "elongated swell of soft and graceful contour, standing apart on the plain or else connected with its fellows sometimes in long lines, again in congeries, and locally merging to form broad loess plateaus."
