Bacteria In Some Iowa Soil Profiles, P. E. Brown, T. H. Benton Jan 1928

Bacteria In Some Iowa Soil Profiles, P. E. Brown, T. H. Benton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent developments in soil science have called attention to the importance of studying and describing soils according to their profile characteristics. The various horizons or layers represented in each profile have certain definite and significant characteristics which may aid in the classification of the soils and may also have some effect on the fertility or crop producing power of the soil. The chemical and physical properties of the distinct horizons in typical soil profiles are being studied and some interesting data are being secured. The study will not be complete, however, until there is investigation of the biological properties of …

A Study Of The Absorption Of Hydrogen Bromide By Cinnamic Acid In The Presence Of Ultra Violet Light, Gladys M. Woods, Thomas C. Poulter Jan 1928

A Study Of The Absorption Of Hydrogen Bromide By Cinnamic Acid In The Presence Of Ultra Violet Light, Gladys M. Woods, Thomas C. Poulter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the absorption of various reagents at the double bond of organic compounds it has been noted that in some cases a different product was obtained when the absorption was carried out in the presence of ultra-violet light. This difference has been frequently explained on the basis that the polarity of the reagent being absorbed was changed by the ultra-violet light. The question has been raised as to whether the difference was actually due to the change in polarity in the double bond.

A Simplified Deduction Of Maxwell's Distribution Law, Leroy D. Weld Jan 1928

A Simplified Deduction Of Maxwell's Distribution Law, Leroy D. Weld

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is the object of this paper, not to contribute to the volume of evidence for the validity of Maxwell's molecular velocity law, or to improve upon the cogency of the various lines of argument which have previously led to it; but rather to bring the deduction within easy reach of any student of integral calculus who has knowledge of the merest rudiments of the theory of errors.

Dimensions Of Carbon Chains, G. W. Stewart Jan 1928

Dimensions Of Carbon Chains, G. W. Stewart

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There seems to be no doubt in reference to the existence of carbon chains in organic compounds, but the arrangements of the carbon atoms and the dimensions of the chains are much in doubt. In connection with x-ray diffraction in liquids it has been possible to make measurements of interest on the paraffin, the alcohol and the fatty acid chains.

A New Form Of Carbon Arc, L. B. Spinney Jan 1928

A New Form Of Carbon Arc, L. B. Spinney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A convenient form of carbon arc for experimental and other work may be constructed at small cost in the following manner. Two straight arc-carbons of suitable size are mounted vertically side by side and parallel and separated by two or three millimeters. These carbons are connected to a 110-volt circuit with a resistance of 5 to 10 ohms, more or less, in series. If now the gap between the upper ends of the carbons is momentarily bridged by another carbon rod, an arc will form and remain when the short-circuiting carbon rod is removed.

A New Value Of Optimum Thickness For X-Ray Scattering, F. D. Leamer Jan 1928

A New Value Of Optimum Thickness For X-Ray Scattering, F. D. Leamer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Using the general formula for the absorption of a homogeneous beam of x-rays, I= Ioe-μt. Hull has arrived at an expression which gives the total intensity of the scattered radiation that emerges from any scattering substance of thickness t. This total intensity becomes a maximum when t = 1/µ.

The Relation Of Certain Medical And Physical Data To Scholastic Success, Frederic S. Beebee Jan 1928

The Relation Of Certain Medical And Physical Data To Scholastic Success, Frederic S. Beebee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken for the purpose of discovering any items in the records of the Department of Physical Education for Men (at the University of Iowa) which might be of significance in relation to scholastic attainment. The technique employed involved a comparison of the two extremes in scholastic standing among the freshman men of the College of Liberal Arts for the academic year 1925-26. The records of the 52 men receiving the highest grades and the 54 men receiving the lowest grades in the entire freshman class were considered.

An Audio-Oscillator Technique In The Study Of Beating Intertones, Ingvald B. Hauge Jan 1928

An Audio-Oscillator Technique In The Study Of Beating Intertones, Ingvald B. Hauge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a previous study of the beating complex by the writer two electrically driven tuning forks having frequencies of 256 d.v. and 244 d.v. respectively were used as the source of the tones. The intensities of the two tones could be valued independently from maximum to minimum by means of rheostats. The sound was conducted to the observer in a sound proof room by means of rubber tubes. When the two primary tones had equal intensities two beating intertones were heard. The pitch of one was near the upper primary while the pitch of the other was near the lower …

Some Aspects Of The Problem Of Fatigue, Christian A. Ruckmick Jan 1928

Some Aspects Of The Problem Of Fatigue, Christian A. Ruckmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In general fatigue is introspectively describable in terms of kinaesthetic relaxation and low attentive ebb of ideas with an affective aspect of indifference, sometimes bordering on mild pleasantness. Galvanic responses taken by both the Hathaway apparatus and a highly sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer show marked individual differences with a general tendency toward lower bodily resistance under fatigue. Two types of fatigue are distinguished: cognitive fatigue and bodily or physical fatigue. Under some experimental conditions both types may be combined. The galvanometric response varies with each type. Muscular fatigue, due probably to continued residual twitchings and tremblings, tends to show increased response, …

The Experimental Psychology Of The Preschool Child, Beth L. Wellman Jan 1928

The Experimental Psychology Of The Preschool Child, Beth L. Wellman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the establishment of the first preschool psychological laboratory in 1921, the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station has been conducting, as one part of the program in the mental development of young children, a series of experiments that have been repeated, extended and amplified from year to year. These experiments have been planned to afford detailed analyses of performance and the evaluation of psychological processes rather than test standards or the clinical diagnosis of a particular child.

The Relation Between The Photoelectric And The Photographic Effect In Silver Bromide, L. W. Butler Jan 1927

The Relation Between The Photoelectric And The Photographic Effect In Silver Bromide, L. W. Butler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Toy, Edgerton, and Vick have recently shown that the photoelectric effect in silver bromide is due to ultraviolet light of wavelength less than λ 2800A. Since the photographic effect extends to λ 5000A they concluded that there is no relation between the photoelectric and the photographic effects in silver bromide. Before this article appeared, the writer had obtained approximately the same result with silver bromide formed by fuming the surface of a silver plate. Our data was obtained by the use of more sensitive apparatus than that employed by the above named investigators. In order to prevent deterioration of …

A Spectrophotometric Method Of Studying Hemoglobin And Other Colored Substances In Solution, George E. Davis Jan 1927

A Spectrophotometric Method Of Studying Hemoglobin And Other Colored Substances In Solution, George E. Davis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An investigation was carried out to determine the possibilities of applying spectrophotometric methods to the problem of estimating the concentration of hemoglobin in blood. The concentration of a substance in solution can easily be determined from its transmission of some particular wave length, providing the absorption ratio for that wave length is known. A late model direct reading spectrophotometer was used. The method was found to be fairly accurate and simple and should prove valuable in other physical investigations involving the study of spectral transmission curves of various colored substances. Some interesting irregularities in the shape of the spectral transmission …

The Effect Of Ultaviolet Light On The Dielectric Properties Of Crystals, Albert A. Aardal Jan 1927

The Effect Of Ultaviolet Light On The Dielectric Properties Of Crystals, Albert A. Aardal

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Measurements have been made on the dielectric properties of some of the natural crystals, and it has been shown that the values of the constants are changed upon exposure to ultraviolet light. The most important of these properties are dielectric constant, phase angle, and resistance, all of which show this variation when exposed to the short wave-lengths.

A Derivation Of The Solubility Product Law, Warren C. Vosburgh Jan 1927

A Derivation Of The Solubility Product Law, Warren C. Vosburgh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Stieglitz1 pointed out in 1908 that the derivation of the solubility product law based on the application of the law of mass action to strong electrolytes is objectionable. Nevertheless many elementary textbooks still give it. Washburn2 later gave a satisfactory thermodynamic derivation, and Butler3 has more recently given a satisfactory statistical one. Another thermodynamic derivation is possible using the now familiar concepts of free energy and activity.
