What is a perfect recitation? In the fifteenth chapter, page 201 of Dewey's "How We Think" will be found a statement of Herbart's formal steps of instruction. They have been designated as the five perfect steps of a recitation. As Dewey says, "These five steps have had greater and better influence on the 'hearing of lessons' than all other methods put together." Dewey further states "that the underlying notion of these steps is that no matter h ow subjects vary in scope and detail there is one and only one 'best' way of mastering them since there is a 'single …

The Beginning Course In High School Physics, L. Begeman Nov 1928

The Beginning Course In High School Physics, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

All authorities on the teaching of physics are agreed that the beginning work of a class in high school physics should be distinctly concrete in nature. It should consist of such subject matter as will readily connect up with the acquired concepts of the student. It is best not to begin with the unfamiliar, abstruse concepts of force, motion and acceleration usually placed first in the high school text.

Some Suggestions For Fall Laboratory Work In Animal Husbandry, H. Earl Rath Nov 1928

Some Suggestions For Fall Laboratory Work In Animal Husbandry, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

Now that the seed corn is selected for next spring, and the frost has put an end to grasses and other outdoor crops, the agricultural instructor often feels that little outdoor material is available for further study. With this in mind I would like to present a laboratory exercise that will provide for some valuable outdoor work, and can be used as the basis for much classroom study as well.

Photomograph, L. B. Spinney Jan 1928

Photomograph, L. B. Spinney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A photometer is arranged in such manner that the screen and the lamp tested are stationary, the standard lamp being adjusted in distance to effect a balance. If the standard is moved by means of a band running over a wheel conveniently near the screen this wheel will revolve through an angle proportional to the distance the standard is moved.

Thomson Effect In Single Crystals Of Zinc, L. A. Ware Jan 1928

Thomson Effect In Single Crystals Of Zinc, L. A. Ware

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Determinations of the Thomson coefficient of single crystals of zinc have been made by the method of Nettleton. For all orientations the coefficient increases with rising temperature (range 50- 200 C). The variation of the coefficient for a single temperature (60° C) as a function of crystal orientation was discussed.

The Address Of The President - Atomicity In Physical Nature, Leroy D. Weld Jan 1928

The Address Of The President - Atomicity In Physical Nature, Leroy D. Weld

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Atomicity in Physical Nature-From the earliest times men have been curious about the makeup of material things and the mechanism of visible processes. When Empedocles reasoned that all change is merely a rearrangement of permanent, unchangeable parts - an idea which the YAtomists and Anaxagoras later elaborated in greater detail - he merely gave expression to what seems to be an intuitive conviction about Nature in general. Anaxagoras recognized the existence of atoms and the fact that there are different kinds of atoms; and he furthermore introduced the grotesque idea of atoms endowed with intelligence, by way of accounting for …

The Use Of The Words Heart, Mind, Soul And Spirit, O. M. Norlie Jan 1928

The Use Of The Words Heart, Mind, Soul And Spirit, O. M. Norlie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper is a study of how often and in what ways the words heart, mind, soul and spirit are used. They are very familiar words, so familiar that they have lost much of their original meanings. They are often used with great looseness and overload the sentence in the form of tautology or verbosity, burying the thought beneath their rubbish.

Oxygen Consumption At 20° In Certain Snakes Pituophis Sayi And Lampropeltis Getulus Holbrooki With Some Notes On Size And Seasonal Difference, Francis M. Baldwin Jan 1928

Oxygen Consumption At 20° In Certain Snakes Pituophis Sayi And Lampropeltis Getulus Holbrooki With Some Notes On Size And Seasonal Difference, Francis M. Baldwin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Before this section of the Academy last year data were presented on the rate of oxygen consumption in certain turtles, which were interpreted to represent both "basal" and "active" rates in these forms. Data on these points were thought to be of some value in connection with the question as to whether a beginning or a remnant of a heat-regulatory mechanism might not be found in this representative of the reptilian group. While it is the hope of the writer to continue the investigations with the turtles, it so happened that specimens of the snakes in Professor Guthrie's collection were …

A Summary Of The Facts And A Restatement Of The Theory Of Sound Localization, Otis C. Trimble Jan 1928

A Summary Of The Facts And A Restatement Of The Theory Of Sound Localization, Otis C. Trimble

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Experimentation has repeatedly demonstrated that phase, time and intensity, as physical variants, function in much the same manner in determining the directional localization of sound. Their "effects" are alike; the relationship of the angular displacement to the differences in the stimuli in each case is approximately the same; each factor has its optimal effectiveness; the very slight differences in the stimuli in each case are not perceived as differences in phase, time and intensity as such; and each factor may modify the effectiveness of the others. But, in the complex conditions of ordinary hearing, does either of these factors predominate …

Ubi Facit Ibi Est, John A. Eldridge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Where a thing acts there it is. In place of the old dogma of Descartes, "Cogito ergo sum," the modern pragmatist says that a thing exists if it affects us; we have an objective rather than subjective philosophy.

The Chemical Composition Of The Burlington Limeston Near Oakville, Iowa, Nicholas Knight Jan 1928

The Chemical Composition Of The Burlington Limeston Near Oakville, Iowa, Nicholas Knight

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An analysis of four specimens of Burlington limestone from near Oakville, Louisa County, was recently made in the chemical laboratories of Cornell College. The rock is hard, compact and crystalline in structure. There seems to be a pure white variety and one with a decided tinge of yellow. We were surprised at the small percentage of magnesium in all the specimens analyzed.

The Increase In Temperature And Weight Of Young House Wrens, Dayton Stoner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the course of banding operations and certain special studies on the life history, habits, temperature and other features of the Bank Swallow conducted in the Okoboji region, northwestern Iowa, during the past few summers, occasional opportunity was offered for similar investigations in connection with the House Wren, Troglodytes a.aedon.
