On Beauty: Ancient Perceptions Of Beauty From Classical Greece To Imperial Rome, Maya Jess
On Beauty: Ancient Perceptions Of Beauty From Classical Greece To Imperial Rome, Maya Jess
Honors Program Theses
When trying to describe something that is beautiful to someone, a common first step is to find an image of the beauty one is trying to describe. In the Greco-Roman world, these images were found in the artworks, texts, and other forms of expression from the time, and images of human beauty were found in paintings, frescos, and statuary. Unfortunately, due to the Ravages of Time, statuary is the most common surviving medium and therefore our biggest asset in knowing what the Greeks and Romans saw as beautiful. Much like how society today uses models to represent beauty standards and …
The Search For Life In Extreme Environments: Measuring Diversity And Quantity Of Archaea In Wind Cave National Park, Nicole Geerdes
The Search For Life In Extreme Environments: Measuring Diversity And Quantity Of Archaea In Wind Cave National Park, Nicole Geerdes
Honors Program Theses
Archaea have the potential to play an essential role in their environment at the base of the food chain. In particular, most of the known species in the phylum Thaumarchaea are autotrophs that can fix their own carbon using energy from ammonia oxidation, that is, they produce their own organic molecules from carbon dioxide by burning nitrogen-based fertilizer. Since their discovery, it has been difficult to learn more about these microbes because they do not grow well in pure laboratory culture. Therefore, much of what is known about them comes from analyzing environmental DNA samples. This allowed researchers to discover …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Intuitive Eating On The Uni Campus, Natalee Jeanne Lyons
Honors Program Theses
Over the course of this project, we will send out a cross-sectional survey to undergraduate students living on UNI’s campus. Included in the survey are questions regarding nutritional campus climate, student’s food preferences and eating habits, as well as the complete second edition of the Intuitive Eating Scale (Tylka & Kroon Van Diest, 2013).
This survey will then be analyzed utilizing SPSS software to draw conclusions regarding this target population (IBM Corp, 2016). Upon completion of this data analysis, our research 2 team hopes to address the following questions: What factors influence the eating behaviors of college students living on …
Trouble Brewing: An Exploration In Parasocial Relationships With Fictional Characters, Isabelle Zeimetz
Trouble Brewing: An Exploration In Parasocial Relationships With Fictional Characters, Isabelle Zeimetz
Honors Program Theses
In the 1940s and 1950s, television and radio had taken over as the dominant form of media (Understanding Media and Culture: an Introduction to Mass Communication). Anthropologist Donald Horton and sociologist R. Wohl noted a strange new relationship developing between the audiences and the hosts under this new dominant media. These relationships ranged from close friendships with radio hosts like Dave Garroway to people wanting to marry fictional characters such as the gal from the radio broadcast, Lonesome Gal. Horton and Wohl realized that these new relationships were not quite the same as interpersonal relationships as they could never be …
Identification Of Fungi And Their Secondary Metabolites From Wind Cave, Kyle Biscoglia
Identification Of Fungi And Their Secondary Metabolites From Wind Cave, Kyle Biscoglia
Honors Program Theses
Eighteen fungal samples were isolated from samples of water collected in Wind Cave, South Dakota. Ten of the samples underwent chemical extraction, a growth inhibition test, and were analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Structural analysis and identification of one secondary metabolite that demonstrated antimicrobial growth inhibition was performed. All eighteen of the fungal samples were able to be identified to the genus level using the ITS region of their DNA, however confident identification of the species level was more difficult to attain just looking at one portion of the sequence.

Just Txt Me: How Digital Platforms Shape The Close Relationships Of Generation Z, Kurt Sernett, Abigail Reinhardt, Lillian Smithson, Mitchell Hollingshead
Iowa Journal of Communication
The rise of texting and social media usage, primarily among Millennials and Generation Z, has led to the emergence of new communication behaviors in the last decade. While many studies have focused solely on the behaviors of Millennials in the digital age, we examine the behaviors of Generation Z and how the usage of digital communication shapes the close relationships of America’s college-aged youth population. After identifying the advantages and disadvantages of face-to-face communication and digital communication, we argue that today’s youth seek a healthy balance between in-person and online communication to cultivate fulfilling interpersonal relationships with their friends and …

Facebook Top Fans, Opinion Leadership, & Percieved News Bias: A Modern Application Of Two-Step Flow To Online News Distribution, Sherice Gearhart, Bingbing Zhang, Sydney E. Brammer
Iowa Journal of Communication
News distributed via Facebook feature comments, which influence audiences. Integrating hostile media bias and two-step flow, this study tests whether an individual’s issue positions, experiences, and exposure to comments influence how Top Fans and others perceive news bias. A survey experiment using a nationwide sample of Facebook users (N = 319) tested the influence of the opinion climate on COVID-19 vaccinations and federal student loan forgiveness. Results show visible opinion leaders (i.e., Top Fans) differently perceived bias in news content.

Improving Teacher Evaluation By Walking The Talk Of Standards-Based Grading: Communicating Educator Growth Using Proficiency Scales, Chad Lang, Matt Townsley
Improving Teacher Evaluation By Walking The Talk Of Standards-Based Grading: Communicating Educator Growth Using Proficiency Scales, Chad Lang, Matt Townsley
Faculty Publications
Teachers and school leaders frequently express a disconnect in the purpose and importance of teacher evaluation, particularly as it relates to educator growth. At the same time, some schools are beginning to communicate student growth through a standards-based grading philosophy. One way schools might “walk the talk” of their grading reform efforts designed to communicate student growth is through the use of proficiency scales to prioritize growth in teacher evaluation. This paper describes implications of simultaneously utilizing a growth model for teacher evaluation and a student growth model via standards-based grading.

Autoethnography On Teaching During A Pandemic, Kelsey Ufford
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted and changed teaching strategies in a young adolescent science classroom and how the pandemic changed personal ideas around online learning. Prior research shows how online learning can be implemented successfully in collegiate classrooms, but it is rare to find research that shows how to successfully implement online learning in a young adolescent classroom. This point of view is from a rural, Iowa middle school standpoint and data was collected through the use of personal journals, emails, and a timeline from March 2020 and May 2020. After the …

The three specific area reviewed are strategic fundraising, mission drift avoidance, and limitations and obstacles organizations encounter regarding data gathering and analysis usage in the decision making process. Implications and recommendations for nonprofit professional are also discussed.
Photo Identification Laws And Perceptions Of Electoral Fraud, Kyle Endres, Costas Panagopoulos
Photo Identification Laws And Perceptions Of Electoral Fraud, Kyle Endres, Costas Panagopoulos
Faculty Publications
Photo identification (ID) laws are often passed on the premise that they will prevent voter fraud and/or reduce perceptions of electoral fraud. The impact of ID laws on perceptions of electoral fraud remains unsettled and is complicated by widespread confusion about current voting requirements. In the 2017 Virginia election, we fielded an experiment, with an advocacy organization, evaluating the effects of the organization’s outreach campaign. We randomized which registered voters were mailed one of three informational postcards. After the election, we surveyed subjects about electoral integrity and their knowledge about election laws. We find that providing registrants with information on …
Balancing Privacy Rights And Surveillance Analytics: A Decision Process Guide, Daniel J. Power, Ciara Heavin, Yvonne O’Connor
Balancing Privacy Rights And Surveillance Analytics: A Decision Process Guide, Daniel J. Power, Ciara Heavin, Yvonne O’Connor
Faculty Publications
The right to privacy has been discussed by scholars in multiple disciplines, yet privacy issues are increasing due to technological advances and lower costs for organisations to adopt smart surveillance. Given the potential for misuse, it seems prudent for stakeholders to critically evaluate Surveillance Analytics (SA) innovations. To assist in balancing the issues arising from SA adoption and the implications for privacy, we review key terms and ethical frameworks. Further, we prescribe a two-by-two Surveillance, Privacy, and Ethical Decision (SPED) Process Guide. SPED recommends the use of one or more of three ethical frameworks, Consequence, Duty, and Virtue. The vertical …

Rethinking Sustainability Monitoring In The Arctic By Linking Resilience And Sustainable Development In Socially-Oriented Observations: A Perspective, Tatiana Vlasova, Andrey N. Petrov, Sergey Volkov
Faculty Publications
Monitoring of social-ecological systems dynamics and sustainability is of high importance in a rapidly changing Arctic. The goal of this essay is to discuss and articulate the principles for designing a suitable Arctic sustainability monitoring framework based on the convergence between resilience thinking and sustainable development paradigms. We propose to integrate sustainability monitoring into the socially-oriented observations (SOO) methodologies in order to design Arctic sus-tainability monitoring as a transdisciplinary participatory activity that results in both co-production of sustainability knowledge and building more sustainable and resilient Arctic social-ecological systems by enabling continuous observation and informed decision-making. Special attention is given to …

We appreciate the interest that our study elicited and the comments from a reader. We commend the reader of our paper for critically evaluating the protocol and results of the study. Here, we would like to respond to the statement made in the letter. Indeed, the rest intervals were longer and time at VO2max was lower in our study than recommended by Bucheit and Larsen.1 However, because the reader is interested in the practical implications of our study, we ask that they consider the following:
Recommender Systems In Higher Education: The Effectiveness Of Meta-Data Analysis In Predicting Academic Success, Michael J. Holmes
Recommender Systems In Higher Education: The Effectiveness Of Meta-Data Analysis In Predicting Academic Success, Michael J. Holmes
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A recommender system is: “a software technology that proactively suggests items of interest to users based on their objective behavior or their explicitly stated preferences” (Pu et al., 2011, p. 157).
Whether we realize it or not, much of our lives are influenced by recommender systems. These systems may recommend where we eat, what movie we watch, what music we listen to, what products we buy, or even what news and social media content we see.
Recommender systems have been effectively utilized in higher education to recommend courses as well as customizing content within an online course to meet specific …
Arthropod Fauna Of Plains Pocket Gopher (Geomys Bursarius) Burrow Systems, Brett Lyle Gourley
Arthropod Fauna Of Plains Pocket Gopher (Geomys Bursarius) Burrow Systems, Brett Lyle Gourley
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Pocket gophers are among the most asocial mammals, living a solitary existence except for mating and the rearing of offspring. They create expansive burrow systems underground while foraging for food and rarely surfacing above ground. As gophers burrow, excess soil is pushed to the surface or placed in older tunnels. This behavior creates a cave-like ecosystem where pocket gophers and associated arthropods live.
Few studies have been done on the arthropod fauna cohabitating with pocket gophers in these burrows. Most of these studies have focused on a family of arthropods over several sites. Many have focused on the southern United …
The Zones Of Regulation In Schools, Kyle Andrew-Kelly Wiebers
The Zones Of Regulation In Schools, Kyle Andrew-Kelly Wiebers
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Emotion regulation is a concept that has existed within the literature for decades, but the presence of emotion regulation programs in schools is a relatively new concept in research (Durlak et al., 2011). Research suggests that emotional regulation skills are related to improved peer relationships and academic success (Denham & Brown, 2010; Durlak et al., 2011). Students who exhibited well-adjusted, or adaptive, emotion regulation had better peer relationships and were more productive and accurate when completing academic tasks (Denham & Brown, 2010; Dvir et al., 2014; Kim & Cicchetti, 2010; Kim‐Spoon et al., 2013; Lereya et al., 2015).
