Presidential Address - The Academy Of The State And The State Of The Academy, William C. Oelke Jan 1960

Presidential Address - The Academy Of The State And The State Of The Academy, William C. Oelke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Our experimentation with the arrangement of the Academy program this year, largely due to the insight and initiative of Dr. Don Lewis of the State University of Iowa, and ably forwarded by Dr. Sherwood Tuttle and others from our host institution, seems to have been most successful if one can judge from the results so far. This rearrangement of the program, placing the address of the president in juxtaposition with the business meeting, allows and indeed makes advisable a change in its character.

Distribution Of Manganese In A Bio-Topo Sequence Of Southeastern Iowa Soils, E. C. A. Runge, L. De Leon Jan 1960

Distribution Of Manganese In A Bio-Topo Sequence Of Southeastern Iowa Soils, E. C. A. Runge, L. De Leon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Manganese extractable by sodium hydrosulfite was determined for 9 soil profiles of a bio-topo (vegetation and drainage) sequence in southeastern Iowa. The distribution of manganese in the soils studied is influenced by vegetation, drainage, and pH. Under prairie vegetation the manganese is evenly distributed with depth in the well-drained soil, but with increasing wetness of the soil profile, manganese is apparently lost from the A1 horizon and accumulates in the lower part of the B horizon. Manganese accumulates in the A1 and A2 horizons of the well-drained soils developed under forest vegetation, but in profiles of increasing wetness …

Notes On Hibernating Bats In Dubuque County Caves, Ted J. Muir, Emmett Polder Jan 1960

Notes On Hibernating Bats In Dubuque County Caves, Ted J. Muir, Emmett Polder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall and winter of 1958 and 1959 four species of bats, Myotis lucifugus, Myotis sodalis, Eptesicus fuscus, and Pipistrellus subftavus, were found in five Dubuque County caves. M. sodalis was a new species record for Iowa. Migration of bats into the caves began when the minimum temperature dropped to 24° F. The greatest increase in cave population occurred when the daytime high temperature was below freezing and nighttime lows ranged from 13° F. to 1° F. Midwinter copulation of E. fuscus was observed, and drinking of condensed water on cave ceilings by M. lucifugus was noted. No intercave …

Cottontails With "Horns", Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1960

Cottontails With "Horns", Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Published information on papillomas, commonly called horns, on cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) in Iowa dates back to 1907. Specimens of horned rabbits are on record from Woodbury, Pottawattamie, Cherokee, Franklin, and Boone counties. Those from the last two counties were necropsied at Iowa State University in 1958 and 1959-60, respectively. Information from conservation officers and biologists shows sight records for a number of years past for at least 16 additional counties. The malady seems to be limited almost entirely to the western half of the state.

A Biometric Technique For Reaction Tissue Research, Graeme P. Berlyn Jan 1959

A Biometric Technique For Reaction Tissue Research, Graeme P. Berlyn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Images of sections of tissue taken from the upper side of leaning stems of Populus deltoides were projected on a paper grid system. Specimens were oriented so that the cambium and the last three annual increments were included in cross section. Counts of stimulated and non-stimulated cells in randomly selected grids were recorded. This procedure provides a means of subjecting the incidence of tension wood and other cytohistological phenomena to statistical analysis.

A Preliminary Survey Of Some Midwestern Plants For Substances Inhibiting Human Plasma Cholinesterase In Vitro, Wallace H. Orgell, Kunda A. Vaidya, Eugene W. Hamilton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Substances which inhibit the action of human plasma cholinesterase in vitro have been found in aqueous extracts of various members of the plant family Solanaceae. A preliminary survey of some weedy and cultivated midwestern representatives of this family revealed eleven active species in six genera: Datura, Lycopersicon, Nicotiana, Petunia, Physalis, and Solanum. A member each of the genera Capsicum and Lycium were inactive. Inhibitory substances were not found in thirty-one species representing nineteen plant families other than Solanaceae.

Effect Of Seed Size And Hulls Upon X-Ray Sensitivity Of Oat Seeds, C. L. Gonzalez, K. J. Frey Jan 1959

Effect Of Seed Size And Hulls Upon X-Ray Sensitivity Of Oat Seeds, C. L. Gonzalez, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Apparently the hull covering on oat seeds afforded some protection to the seed from X-rays, although the degree of protection varied among varieties. At X-ray dosages of 30,000r to 40,000r the large seeds were damaged more than the small ones when measured by germination percentage or reduction in seedling vigor. The damage from X-rays was not completely related to the germ sizes of the 2 seed classes.

Profile Characteristics Of Some Forest-Formed Soils Derived From Iowan Till, J. M. Soileau, F. F. Riecken Jan 1959

Profile Characteristics Of Some Forest-Formed Soils Derived From Iowan Till, J. M. Soileau, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three profiles were collected in Bremer and Floyd counties to represent the proposed Coggon series; detailed field and laboratory studies were conducted on these profiles. The Coggon soils have developed under forest vegetation from a "two-story" parent material consisting of a silty mantle-pebble band-glacial till sequence. Being formed from Iowan-age glacial till, the Coggon profiles exhibit an amount of development that is low compared to other Gray-Brown Podzolic soils of Iowa. Coarser parent material might possibly explain why Coggon is less developed than the Weller soils, which are formed from presumably younger, loessial parent material. On the other hand, the …

A Study Of The Effects Of The 1958 Junior High School Seminar In Science And Mathematics, Iowa State Teachers College, Upon The Pupils’ Attitudes Toward And Interest In Science And Mathematics, William Richards Babcock

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The current emphasis which the "atomic age" has placed upon the education of "gifted" or "talented" pupils in science and mathematics has provided educators with an opportunity to devise and implement new and unique programs in the elementary and secondary schools. Educators have utilized two approaches in meeting the challenge--acceleration and enrichment. Many secondary schools in all parts of the United States are offering pupils opportunity to take more advanced course work than the traditional curriculum had allowed. College courses, as well as high school subjects, are being offered at the high school level both during the regular academic year …

A Handbook For The Production Of Operettas In Small Secondary Schools, Thomas Eugene Curtis Jan 1959

A Handbook For The Production Of Operettas In Small Secondary Schools, Thomas Eugene Curtis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study has been to examine the various problems attendant to the production of operettas, with recommended procedures for solutions to these problems, and with particular attention to those problems inherent in the smaller secondary schools. An attempt has been made to operate on the most practical level with theoretical explanations being confined to the minimum.

A Proposed Handbook For Iowa Coordinators Of Distributive Education, Orville Lee Allen Jan 1959

A Proposed Handbook For Iowa Coordinators Of Distributive Education, Orville Lee Allen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Distributive education is a nation-wide training program designed to prepare workers for more effective distribution of goods and services through programs of instruction at both the adult and secondary levels.1 Reimbursable distributive education was initiated in Iowa in 1937. In 1958 Iowa had twenty-four high school cooperative part-time programs and ten adult programs in operation.

Empathic Ability Compared As To Environmental Setting And Concept Of Measurement, Alice Jane Anderson Jan 1959

Empathic Ability Compared As To Environmental Setting And Concept Of Measurement, Alice Jane Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the turn of the century there has been a growing controversy as to the definition and significance of the term "empathy" in the separate fields of esthetics and psychology. People concerned with both areas use a similar basic definition - the ability to "feel into" an object or another person. It is in the attainment of this ability and the ways in which we can use it that the definitions vary. In the esthetic sense, empathy is thought of as a process of identification and projection. A person watching a play, for instance, projects himself into the actions and …

Effects Of Time And Method Of Treatment On Tree Kill And Bluegrass Recovery, J. M. Aikman, E. P. Sylwester Jan 1959

Effects Of Time And Method Of Treatment On Tree Kill And Bluegrass Recovery, J. M. Aikman, E. P. Sylwester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Box elder trees in replicated plots within four seasonal blocks mostly ranged in age from 17 to 24 years, in breast-high diameter from 2 to 8 inches, and in height from 18 to 24 feet. Tree cutting at 3 inches and at 1 foot was done with a chain saw; and a brush killer-fuel oil mixture, at the rate of one quart of concentrate to 5 gallons of fuel oil and one quart to 10 gallons, was applied to the stumps. Resprouting from stumps cut at both heights and in four different seasons was controlled by both concentrations of the …

Yield Components In Oats. Iv. Effect Of Delayed Application Of Nitrogen, Kenneth J. Frey Jan 1959

Yield Components In Oats. Iv. Effect Of Delayed Application Of Nitrogen, Kenneth J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three rates of nitrogen fertilization, 20, 40, and 80 pounds per acre, were applied to oats at seeding time and 2, 4, and 6 weeks later. When compared with the seeding data, delaying the application of 20 and 80 pounds of nitrogen caused a decrease in relative grain yields. At the 40-pound rate, increases in relative yields due to applying the nitrogen 2 and 4 weeks after seeding were observed. The yield response to delayed application of 20 pounds of nitrogen per acre resulted from a reduced relative number of seeds per head, while the 80 pound response was due …

Biosynthesis Of Cholinesterase-Inhibitory Substances From Non-Inhibitory Dialkyl Thiophosphates By Plant Tissues, Wallace H. Orgell, Kunda A. Vaidya, Eugene W. Hamilton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Aqueous solutions of the potassium salts of diethyl thiophosphate and diethyl dithiophosphate were applied to intact leaves of the following 10 plant species: alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis, Duchesne), American elderberry (Sambucus canadensis L.), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber), soybean (Glycine max, Merr.), lima bean (Phaseolus limensis Macf.), catnip (Nepeta cataria L.), and Virginia creeper (Hedera quinquefolia L.). After 24 to 72 hours, aqueous homogenates of all species, excepting carrot, inhibited the action of human plasma cholinesterase in vitro. Neither the plant homogenates nor the thiophosphate salts either separately …

Growth Of The Walleye In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, James C. Schmulbach Jan 1959

Growth Of The Walleye In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, James C. Schmulbach

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Even though the habitat is marginal, a considerable fishery exists for walleyes in the Des Moines River. Tagging studies indicate the annual rate of harvest to be about 10 percent. The size of the population is evidently limited by frequent fish kills due to high water temperatures in the summer and oxygen depletion in the winter. Considerable variation in growth exists within age groups and between year classes. Possible explanations include: (1) sexual differences, especially between fish over four years old; (2) frequent fish kills which result in vacancies in the habitat; (3) low water levels during certain years; and …
