The Principal’S Role In The Library Services In Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 200 To 300 Students, Arthur E. Borwick Jan 1961

The Principal’S Role In The Library Services In Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 200 To 300 Students, Arthur E. Borwick

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For many years colleges and universities have provided reasonably adequate instruction tor school administrators in moat of the areas of their professional education. Required courses in administration, curriculum, and supervision of the secondary school give attention to nearly all phases of the school program. However, it is questionable whether some phases of secondary education have been properly covered, and one of these is the library. Since all areas of responsibility are of concern to school administrators, it is fundamental that the role of the school library be adequately understood and supported by administrators if the library is to make its …

The Place Of English As A Foreign Language In The Ethiopian School System, Haile J. Abedjie Jan 1961

The Place Of English As A Foreign Language In The Ethiopian School System, Haile J. Abedjie

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Until the Italian occupation of 1936-1941 the name Ethiopia, which dates back to Biblical times, had been shrouded with myth and mystery. To some it was a reminder of the legend of the Queen of Sheba and to others it evoked the myth of Prester John. 1 Although the Italo-Ethiopian war of 1935-1936 did much to help foreigners place Ethiopia on the map of the world, even now only a very few foreigners can converse intelligently on Ethiopian history, culture, or politics.

A Follow-Up Study Of Ellsworth Junior College Graduates And Students Who Transferred To Baccalaureate Colleges Or Semi-Professional Schools, Eleanor J. Andershok Jan 1961

A Follow-Up Study Of Ellsworth Junior College Graduates And Students Who Transferred To Baccalaureate Colleges Or Semi-Professional Schools, Eleanor J. Andershok

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The junior college is uniquely American and a part of our total educational pattern as evidenced by its growth and progress in the last fifty years. The need to progress and improve is felt by all institutions of education. National educational surveys are made, but they do not reflect the heart of the individual school; they do not point out its individual strengths and weaknesses; they do not indicate the achievement of unique objectives and goals. If the junior college is to improve its educational effectiveness, it can only be done through introspection and self-study.

An Analysis Of The Moral Attitudes Of High School Sophomores And Seniors In The Public Schools Of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Beaumont Roger Hagebak Jan 1961

An Analysis Of The Moral Attitudes Of High School Sophomores And Seniors In The Public Schools Of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Beaumont Roger Hagebak

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It has been more than twenty years since G. W. Allport said, "The concept of attitude is possibly the most distinctive and indispensable concept in contemporary American l social psychology." Yet even though two decades have passed his words are still as vital and meaningful as when they were first uttered. The importance of attitudes, of value systems, needs no documentation or proof. We all teel the effects of the attitudes of others, we all affect others by our attitudes, every day of our lives.

If our country is to maintain the position of a world power, it is important that each of its citizens receives an education in proportion to his potential. As Ginzberg states in his book, Human Resources: The Wealth of a Nation, "While every society must get along with such talent as it has, its accomplishments and even its survival will depend on its developing the maximum number of people with high potential. A counselor in the educational system might think in terms of this ideal of maximum development when visualizing an educational goal for his high school group. But ours …

A Drop-Out Study Of The Cedar Falls Community Schools, Bruce Roy Amble

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Every decade of this century has evidenced an increase in the amount of public education being received by American youth. Even so, the magnitude of concern over the number of students dropping out of school has not diminished. In 1900 the rate of students to continue in school until graduation was 6.4 to every 100 seventeen-year-olds in the population; more recently the ratio was 60.0 to every 100.

The Integration Of Some Principles Of Business Management Into Beginning Bookkeeping Through The Use Of Case Problems, Sally Ann Wallace Jefferson Jan 1961

The Integration Of Some Principles Of Business Management Into Beginning Bookkeeping Through The Use Of Case Problems, Sally Ann Wallace Jefferson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The keeping of books as financial records has long been the backbone of the expanse and variety of human activities commonly known as "business". Financial records are important as historical records; as a source of information for creditors, owners and investors; and as a tool with which management can analyze business. Double-entry bookkeeping, which forms the basis of many formal bookkeeping courses, is based on fundamental principles which date back to the days of early Mediterranean commerce. These principles were first set forth in 1494 by Lucas Paccioli in the oldest treatise ever printed or written on the subject of …

A Source Of Bacterial Blight Resistance For Soybeans, J. M. Dunleavy, C. R. Weber, D. W. Chamberlain Jan 1960

A Source Of Bacterial Blight Resistance For Soybeans, J. M. Dunleavy, C. R. Weber, D. W. Chamberlain

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Incidence of bacterial blight of soybeans was observed from 1953 to 1959. During this period the disease was observed in 25 to 72 percent of the fields examined. A search was made for an improved source of blight resistance. A soybean introduction, P.I. 68708 was resistant to blight under natural conditions and when inoculated. It was also resistant to brown spot but was susceptible to race 8 of Peronospora manshurica as well as to Phytophthora rot. Yield, date of maturity, seed size, seed quality, and lodging resistance of the introduction were comparable to the same characters of the variety Blackhawk.

Genesis And Classification Considerations Of Some Prairie-Formed Soil Profiles From Local Alluvium In Adair County, Iowa, F. F. Riecken, Ernest Poetsch Jan 1960

Genesis And Classification Considerations Of Some Prairie-Formed Soil Profiles From Local Alluvium In Adair County, Iowa, F. F. Riecken, Ernest Poetsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Data are presented on three profiles formed under prairie from Late Wisconsin to Recent age local alluvium of moderately fine texture. In the upper 20 inches nitrogen and base saturation values are quite similar to those found for normative upland Brunizems. Below 20 to about 50 inches, nitrogen and base saturation values decrease and increase, respectively, more slowly in the local alluvium-formed soils. It is suggested that the classic ABC soil genesis concept does not apply to the local alluvium-formed soils of this study. Rather, through cumulative effects of new parent material at the surface, this new C was transformed …

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid On Oats, K. J. Frey Jan 1960

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid On Oats, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oat plants were sprayed with gibberellic acid in concentrations of 10 ppm, 100 ppm, 1000 ppm, and 2,500 ppm at 24 hours before and 24 and 144 hours after anthesis. The application 24 hours before or after anthesis caused 10 percent to 50 percent elongation of the upper internodes. Weight of the primary kernels was depressed approximately 10 percent and that of the secondary 15 percent. The effect upon seed size was independent of time of application or concentration.

Histological And Histochemical Study Of The Roots Of Zamia Floridana And The Endophytic Alga Contained In Them, Ronald Meyer Jan 1960

Histological And Histochemical Study Of The Roots Of Zamia Floridana And The Endophytic Alga Contained In Them, Ronald Meyer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Some of the epigean roots are found to contain an endophytic blue-green alga, Anabaena cycadearum; others are free of algae but are later invaded. Normal roots and algal-free roots possess a diarch protostele; algal-infected roots have a triarch protostele. The normal root has an epidermis which in the other roots is sloughed off and replaced by a leathery phelloderm. The algal-infected root contains in the mid-cortex a wide area filled with algal cells and spanned at infrequent intervals by starch-free layer, radially elongated cortical cells. The algal-free root contains a starch-free layer of cells in the mid-cortex which are believed …

Effects Of Capillary Permeability On Tracers In The Blood, Victor W. Bolie, Neal R. Cholvin Jan 1960

Effects Of Capillary Permeability On Tracers In The Blood, Victor W. Bolie, Neal R. Cholvin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous advantages arise from a concise mathematical formulation of the influence of capillary permeability on tracers in the blood. The paper deals with a theoretical description of the depletion of a blood-borne tracer under the combined influences of the reversible process of transcapillary diffusion and irreversible processes such as renal excretion and first-order enzymatic degradations. Numerical calculations are illustrated graphically to show application of the theory to typical tracer dilution problems.

The Root-System Distribution Patterns For Five Oat Varieties, R. Stucker, K. J. Frey Jan 1960

The Root-System Distribution Patterns For Five Oat Varieties, R. Stucker, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Dry weights of the root systems of 5 oat varieties were determined at 4-inch intervals to a maximum depth of 24 inches. The varieties produced a differential distribution of root dry weight at the various depths sampled. Over 60 percent of the root dry weights of the Corn Belt varieties, Clinton, Marion, and Andrew, was in the upper 4 inches of soil, whereas comparable values for Craigs-afterlea and A465 were 50 percent and 35 percent, respectively. The root dry weight to a depth of 24 inches was the same at the boot stage as at maturity.

High School Science Achievement As Related To Interest And I.Q. Among Graduates Of Thibodaux High School, Thibodaux, Louisiana, And Malcolm Price Laboratory School, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Louis E. Barrilleaux

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Numerous articles on the possible causes of an increasing shortage of scientific manpower have been published. Many of these articles have stressed the lack of sufficient guidance in directing capable students in high school toward an emphasis in science. It is pointed out that insufficient guidance alone, among high school students, is a major factor in the increasing shortage of scientific personnel. As a result, the schools have been under criticism.

A Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Using A Time-Penalty Scoring Procedure For Shorthand Dictation And Transcription Tests, M. Elaine Blumhagen Jan 1960

A Study To Determine The Feasibility Of Using A Time-Penalty Scoring Procedure For Shorthand Dictation And Transcription Tests, M. Elaine Blumhagen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The ultimate goal of any shorthand course is to have the students produce mailable copy from their shorthand notes at reasonable rates of speed. This fact has been recognized by leading authorities in the field of-shorthand and transcription. With acceptance of this goal as the objective of shorthand and transcription teaching, some valid means of measuring student progress toward that goal is essential.

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal Jan 1960

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The people of India had long been dissatisfied with the educational program which existed prior to the Basic system of education. The traditional system which preceded Basic education originated with the Charter Act of 1813 of the East India Company of Britain. Only a relatively few persons benefited directly from this system; it never reached the masses. This policy of "downward infiltration" created some complex and unfavorable results. It is important to note in this connection a statement from the 1958 UNESCO world Survey of Education that "owing to defects in the official policies, the position of mass education in …

Exchangeable Potassium And Clay Minerals In Selected Iowa Soil Profiles, J. J. Hanway, R. L. Handy, A. D. Scott Jan 1960

Exchangeable Potassium And Clay Minerals In Selected Iowa Soil Profiles, J. J. Hanway, R. L. Handy, A. D. Scott

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Exchangeable K values and X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained for soil samples from several modal profiles of nine different soil series in Iowa. Exchangeable K in "moist" subsoils was consistently low and almost always lower than in the "moist" surface soil. Drying increased exchangeable K in all the soils, but the increase due to drying varied between soil series and with depth in the profile of each series. Reversion of exchangeable K to a non-exchangeable form on rewetting the oven-dry samples generally increased with depth in the profile but the exchangeable K never decreased to the original "moist" level. X-ray …

Estimate Of Slope Classes By Counties In Iowa, R. W. Arnold, L. E. Tyler, F. F. Riecken Jan 1960

Estimate Of Slope Classes By Counties In Iowa, R. W. Arnold, L. E. Tyler, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The proportion of land in given slope classes has been estimated for Iowa counties from a randomly selected sample. The sample, approximately 2 percent of the land area of the state, consists of about 4,500 individual tracts, each about 160 acres in size. A detailed soil map was made of each tract, using a 4-inch-to-the-mile aerial photograph as a base map, thus providing the basic information for a physical land-condition inventory. The data from the soil maps were projected to give estimates of physical land conditions by counties and for the state as a whole. On a state basis, nearly …

Characteristics Of The Floyd And Some Related Soils In Floyd And Bremer Counties, Iowa, J. A. Phillips, F. F. Riecken Jan 1960

Characteristics Of The Floyd And Some Related Soils In Floyd And Bremer Counties, Iowa, J. A. Phillips, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study deals with imperfectly and poorly drained soils generally considered to have developed under prairie from a parent material consisting of a sandy-silt mantle overlying Iowan glacial loam till. Three Floyd profiles, two profiles of the proposed Tripoli series (Floyd, poorly drained variant), and one Clyde profile were studied in the field and in the laboratory. Results indicate that the Tripoli soils should be separated from the Floyd and mapped as a separate series. The present concepts of the Floyd series as a minimal Brunizem and the Tripoli as a minimal Wiesenboden are substantiated by field studies and laboratory …

The Impact Of Usage Studies Upon Recent Grammar Texts, Donald Keith Chiquet Jan 1960

The Impact Of Usage Studies Upon Recent Grammar Texts, Donald Keith Chiquet

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to show to what degree writers of grammar texts have been influenced by the controversy over usage as a criterion of grammatical acceptability. More specifically, the problem is to show the degree of agreement between textbook writers and liberal grammarians. This information will be used to determine the degree to which textbooks are liberal or traditional. If the texts are liberal, it may be considered that the impact of liberal grammarians upon textbook writers has been great. If these grammar texts are not liberal, or if they are no more liberal than they were …

The Development Of Ear Prirnordia Of Zea In Relation To Position On The Plant, John E. Sass Jan 1960

The Development Of Ear Prirnordia Of Zea In Relation To Position On The Plant, John E. Sass

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The development of auxiliary buds of a yellow dent maize hybrid was studied. Seven buds at acropetally successive nodes survived at least to 68 days after planting and became pistillate inflorescences, potential ears. Meiosis occurred in the basal ovaries of the upper two ears after 68 days, when the styles were 2 mm. long, and complete embryo sacs were present by 71 days. The two upper ears attained approximately the same morphological and cytological stage between 68 and 71 days. The top bud invariably became the harvestable ear. The failure of complete development of the second ear is not ascribed …
