Ovarian Analysis For Data On Corpora Lutea Changes In White-Tailed Deer, Arnold O. Haugen, David L. Trauger Jan 1962

Ovarian Analysis For Data On Corpora Lutea Changes In White-Tailed Deer, Arnold O. Haugen, David L. Trauger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reproductive capacity of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Iowa was determined for the period 1957 to 1961. Ovarian structures were checked in 425 pairs of ovaries. Physical characteristics of corpora lutea and corpora albicantia were checked. Breeding by fawns was indicated by the presence of an average of 1.09 corpora lutea per doe in their first winter of life, and by 0.87 corpora albicantia between the ages of 1 and 2 years. This indicates a loss or lack of detection of 25 per cent of the corpora albicantia. As is to be expected, no corpora albicantia were …

A Useful Planting-Jig And Plot Design For Experimental Plantings, Ben F. Graham Jr. Jan 1962

A Useful Planting-Jig And Plot Design For Experimental Plantings, Ben F. Graham Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In experimental plantings intended to demonstrate interactions between plants it is desirable that the distance between plants be uniform. A planting pattern is suggested in which each of 100 plants is equidistant from all of its neighbors; and a simple planting-jig, which is readily adaptable for spacings up to one meter, is described.

A Central Iowa Pheasant Nesting Study, 1961, Vernon Wright, Paul Otte Jan 1962

A Central Iowa Pheasant Nesting Study, 1961, Vernon Wright, Paul Otte

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of nesting success of pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) on three areas in central Iowa in 1961 showed that the peak of nest establishment occurred between May 16 and May 30. Hatching success varied inversely with pheasant population density. Twenty-four of the 96 nests found hatched successfully. Roadsides sheltered the highest percentage of nests on a per acre basis (46 nests/100 acres), followed by hayfields (24 nests/100 acres) and oatfields (4.7 nests/100 acres). Idle land and fence rows contained the fewest number of nests. Most nests were located in cover from 16 to 22 inches in height. No significant …

Inheritance Of Seed Weight And Its Relation To Grain Yield Of Oats, K. J. Frey Jan 1962

Inheritance Of Seed Weight And Its Relation To Grain Yield Of Oats, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 3 oat crosses seed weight appeared to be inherited as a quantitative character. Each of the crosses showed transgressive segregation. In 6 crosses, the correlations between yield and seed weight were all positive, but only 4 were significant. In simulated selection experiments, the efficiency of selection for yield was compared when only yield or when yield plus seed weight were used as the selection criterion. In general, the addition of seed weight as a selection criterion decreased the gain in yield.

An Unusual Case Of Stream Piracy, Frank Reckendorf, Keith M. Hussey Jan 1962

An Unusual Case Of Stream Piracy, Frank Reckendorf, Keith M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An unusual case of stream piracy took place in the recent past through the Franklin Bluffs on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska. The Sagavanirktok River and Hawk Creek occupied opposite positions on the sides of a ridge, with the result of a rapid lowering of the divide between them. Loss of cementation (by thaw) of the gravels in the formation separating them continued until the higher flowing Hawk Creek burst through the ice-free gravels of the ridge to join the Sagavanirktok River about one-half mile upstream from its former junction.

The Beck Word-Color Association Test As A Predictor Of Juvenile Delinquency, Janet Ellyn Berger Jan 1962

The Beck Word-Color Association Test As A Predictor Of Juvenile Delinquency, Janet Ellyn Berger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Juvenile delinquency is an old problem, a problem that has been intensified and given new emphasis during recent years. This problem has received nation-wide attention and publicity. Since juvenile delinquency is such an old problem, its history, too, dates back many years. Among the early attempts to differentiate the treatment of youthful offenders were the efforts of the tenth century monarch, King Athelston of England He enacted a law which stated that "man shall not slay none younger than a fifteen winters' man. " l Generally, however, any juvenile who has committed an offense was considered to be an ordinary …

Evaluating The Elementary Music Program: A Method Based On The Austin, Minnesota, 1959-60 Self-Survey, Leslie Eugene Dunlap

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this study to outline a step by step method of evaluation for an elementary music program in which the music instruction is done by the classroom teacher under the direction of a music supervisor. This proposed method of evaluation was based on the beliefs that (1) the assessment of concurrence on all aspects of the music program between music staff, classroom teachers, principals, administrators, and parents, and the measurement of the reaction to and interest in music on the part of the students would comprise the scope of useful evaluation; and (2) for an evaluation …

The Relationship Of The High School Music Program To The Post-High School Musical Activities Of Selected Graduates Of Decorah High School, Decorah, Iowa, Classes Of 1940, 1945 And 1950, Elton Dresselhaus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An investment of time, money, or energy is frequently followed by an evaluation of the nature and worth of the project in terms of the results obtained. This study deals with the field of music education which represents a large scale investment on the part of the American public, an investment of time, money, and energy. It is appropriate on occasion, therefore, to consider the high school music program with regard to the value it has for the student and the community in which it is located. What are the values involved and how effective is the high school music …

Inhibition Of Germination Of Oospores Of Peronospora Manshurica, John Dunleavy, Glenn Snyder Jan 1962

Inhibition Of Germination Of Oospores Of Peronospora Manshurica, John Dunleavy, Glenn Snyder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oospores of Peronospora manshurica have not previously been observed to germinate. In the present tests, however, oospores on seed coats of soybeans washed in running tap water for 1 week germinated. Each germinating oospore produced a germ tube, which developed into typical branched mycelium. Oospores were placed in the center of water-agar plates, some of which were immediately sprayed with a dilute suspension of conidia of P. manshurica. Other plates were sprayed later. Germination of conidia was inhibited in an area around the oospores. The size of the area of inhibition was proportional to the elapsed time between placing oospores …

A Study Of Special Admissions Of High School Graduates For The Years 1959, 1960, And 1961 At The State College Of Iowa, James Gregg Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

During recent months much attention has been focused on the crowded conditions of the colleges and universities in Iowa. At the same time, a topic of a more controversial nature has been that of entrance requirements and minimum academic standards. Much of this discussion has been provoked through the denial of admittance to college of those of low academic achievement in high school, and the appearance. of articles and editorials protesting this practice in magazines and newspapers. Inasmuch as the State College of Iowa has had a program of Special Admissions in operation, this writer was led to investigate the …

Retention Of Chlorophyll In Lesions Produced By Tobacco Ringspot Virus, John Dunleavy Jan 1962

Retention Of Chlorophyll In Lesions Produced By Tobacco Ringspot Virus, John Dunleavy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

On intact and detached cotyledons of Caserta squash development of lesions produced by the tobacco ringspot virus was observed macroscopically and microscopically. Chlorophyll was destroyed in all portions of infected cotyledons except at the periphery of lesions and at the basal cells of trichomes in the center of lesions. Lesions were smaller on detached, infected cotyledons. Chlorophyll was retained in intact plastids clumped in a reticulate pattern throughout lesions on detached leaves. Chloroplasts in lesions were still deeply pigmented 40 days after cotyledons had been detached, whereas all other areas of the cotyledons were devoid of chlorophyll 1 week after …

Culture Of Excised Embryos Of Pinus Ponderosa, Virgil K. Howe Jan 1962

Culture Of Excised Embryos Of Pinus Ponderosa, Virgil K. Howe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Embryos of Pinus ponderosa Laws. were excised and placed on a nutrient agar medium to which auxins in varying concentrations had been added. Results indicated that when the auxins were dissolved in and diluted with 40 per cent alcohol there was inhibition of seedling growth and development. Techniques were devised which eliminated the use of alcohol. In the absence of alcohol, morphologically normal seedlings were produced which were transferred to quartz sand after 60 days and at 113 days were transplanted into soil. Apparent normal growth and development continued throughout the duration of the experiment. The addition of auxins produced …

Iowa Fungi Parasitic On Nematodes, Don C. Norton Jan 1962

Iowa Fungi Parasitic On Nematodes, Don C. Norton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seventeen species of fungi parasitic on nematodes are newly recorded in Iowa. These are Acrostalagmus obovatus, Arthrobotrys conoides, A. musiformis, A. oligospora, Dactylaria brochopaga, Dactyldla acrochaeta, D. doedycoides, Haptoglossa heterospora, Harposporium anguillulae, H. lilliputanum, H. oxycoracum, Meria coniospora, Nematoctonus tylosporus, Spicaria coccospora, Stylopage grandis, S. leiohypha and Triposporina aphanopaga. A species of Zoophagus which captured nematodes was found in rotting wood and leaf mulch. Arthrobotrys conoides was the most common nematode parasitic fungus found in forage legume fields. It was followed in prevalence by a sterile fungus. In woodlands, A. oligospora predominated followed by Dactylella gephyropaga.

B-Chromosomes And Pollen Size In Maize, Peter A. Peterson, Alan Munson Jan 1962

B-Chromosomes And Pollen Size In Maize, Peter A. Peterson, Alan Munson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Pollen grain size was used to measure the effect of the presence of a low number of B-chromosomes. The pollen grains of forty-two plants distributed among two classes -those with one to five B-chromosomes and those without B-chromosomes were measured. No significant differences could be detected between the mean pollen grain size of B and non-B-chromosome classes. There is an indication of an effect on the variance in pollen grain size of the B-chromosome class.

Yield Components In Oats. Vi. Their Value In Selecting For Yield, K. J. Frey Jan 1962

Yield Components In Oats. Vi. Their Value In Selecting For Yield, K. J. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

F2 derived lines from 6 oat crosses were evaluated for production of the two yield components, spikelets per panicle and seed weight in 1958. From the yield component data the yielding ability of each line was predicted. All lines having a predicted yielding capacity of ll0% or more were tested for actual yielding ability in 1959. The calculated yield differential between the means of the selected lines and of the whole population was 16%, whereas the mean differential for actual yield in 1959 was only 5%. In a companion study using 5 of the crosses, grain yield itself was the …

Infection Of Quercus Macrocarpa By White And Gray Isolates Of Ceratocystis Fagacearum, M. A. Marchetti Jan 1962

Infection Of Quercus Macrocarpa By White And Gray Isolates Of Ceratocystis Fagacearum, M. A. Marchetti

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Cultural studies were made of 348 bur oak branches inoculated with white and gray isolates of Ceratocystis fagacearum at diametrically opposed loci. Approximately 15 per cent of the branches developed foliar symptoms of oak wilt, yielded C. fagacearum, or both. More than one-third of the visibly diseased branches did not yield this fungus. Part of the failures were attributed to competition from other fungi and bacteria, isolated commonly from wood of both inoculated and uninoculated branches. No branches yielded both isolates of the pathogen. Distribution of the two isolates among trees indicated preferential susceptibility of the host may contribute to …

Development Of Axillary Buds Of The Tillers Of Zea, John E. Sass Jan 1962

Development Of Axillary Buds Of The Tillers Of Zea, John E. Sass

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An inbred line of popcorn and a line that contained teosinte germ plasm were compared with respect to the inflorescences of the numerous tillers produced by plants of these lines. In both lines, all terminal and axillary apices of the tillers initiated inflorescences. No axillary tassels were found on the tillers of either line. On a popcorn tiller, a terminal inflorescence was either a tassel, a tassel that bore a few scattered kernels, an ear, or an ear that had basal tassel branches. Every tiller of the "teosinte-contaminated" corn had a terminal tassel.

Chromosome Study Of Arisaema Of Taiwan, Tseng-Chieng Huang Jan 1962

Chromosome Study Of Arisaema Of Taiwan, Tseng-Chieng Huang

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The chromosome number of most Arisaema plants was reported as 2n=28. Since species of Arisaema vary greatly in morphological features, comparative studies of anatomical, cytological, and other characteristics among the populations are required for more realistic taxonomic revision of this group. Two Taiwan species of Arisaema, A. formosana Hay. and A. consanguineum Schott, have been studied by the writer. Their chromosome numbers, obtained in mitosis, were 28 and 14 respectively.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Age and growth of 151 creek chubs, Semotilus atromaculatus, from the Des Moines River in 1961 were determined by scale and length-frequency methods. The body scale relationship had an intercept of 8.3 millimeters in total length. Chubs reached total lengths of 58, 95, and 128 millimeters at the formation of the first, second and third annuli respectively. Annuli form in May. Weight increased approximately as the cube of the length. The most important food items were plant material, aquatic insects, and, in the case of larger chubs, fish. The chubs were found adaptable in their food habits with the changing …

Explorations In The Measurement Of Empathy As Analytical Predictive Ability, Calvin J. Daane, Gordon J. Rhum Jan 1962

Explorations In The Measurement Of Empathy As Analytical Predictive Ability, Calvin J. Daane, Gordon J. Rhum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This was a preliminary effort to develop a scale for the measurement of empathy as analytical predictive ability. The approach embodied the use of 20 words in three contexts; the 60 rating elements comprised the scale. Extent of agreement between self ratings of a person to be judged (reader) and the estimates of those ratings by a group of persons (judges) was used as a measure of empathic ability. An attempt to take into account possible spurious influences on the empathy scores was not fruitful. The standard materials, including a filmed version of the reader's behavior, were used with several …
