A Study Of Photosynthesis In Clear Lake, Lowa, Cornelius I. Weber Jan 1963

A Study Of Photosynthesis In Clear Lake, Lowa, Cornelius I. Weber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The oxygen and carbon-14 methods were used to measure photosynthesis in Clear Lake, Iowa during 1958 and 1959. Differences in the rates of photosynthesis at widely separated stations were generally small. Daily variations in the rate of photosynthesis were not greater than two-fold. The correlation between the rate of photosynthesis and the incident illumination was 0.81, and the efficiency of utilization of incident light energy was 0.72 per cent. The net gain of organic matter at the phytoplankton level during the period May 1 to November 1 was equivalent to 3480 pounds of glucose per acre.

Food Habits Of The Yellow Bass, Roccus Mississippiensis, Clear Lake, Iowa, Summer 1962, Rudy Kraus Jan 1963

Food Habits Of The Yellow Bass, Roccus Mississippiensis, Clear Lake, Iowa, Summer 1962, Rudy Kraus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Return of Clear Lake water levels to normal was accompanied by some increase in growth of yellow bass in 1962. Entomostracans, chironomids and Hyalella sp. were the principal foods of young yellow bass. Immature insects, principally Diptera, were the predominant foods of older bass with claclocera, Hyalella sp. and copepods next in importance. There was no increase in utilization of small fish as food. Yellow bass were more active and fed more at night than in daytime.

Some Aspects Of Territorial Behavior Of The Fantail Darter, Melvin F. Seifert Jan 1963

Some Aspects Of Territorial Behavior Of The Fantail Darter, Melvin F. Seifert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Striped fantail darters, Etheostoma flabellare lineolatum, were maintained in small aerated aquaria and fed tubificid worms. Darters over 1inch long established and defended territories usually no larger than a nook under rocks. Darters, over 2 inches long, selected covers open on both sides, but medium-sized darters selected smaller, more secluded covers. Dominance in selection of territory was associated with size, although established darters might maintain their covers against larger newcomers. Stone bottom was selected over pebble and pebble over sand. Pigmentation seemed to show an effect in habitat selection.

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward Guidance Of Guidance Counselors And Graduate Students Preparing As School Administrators, Jan Ness Flickinger Jan 1963

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward Guidance Of Guidance Counselors And Graduate Students Preparing As School Administrators, Jan Ness Flickinger

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the big problems of the present mass educational program in America is how can the educational program be organized so each child has an opportunity to satisfy his needs. Although there is no completely satisfactory answer to this question, one attempt to solve this problem has been the establishment of guidance programs in schools. For the purpose of this study the writer is assuming that guidance is an essential part of education and consequently needed in school.

A Study Of The Career Patterns And Formal Education Of Selected Managers Of Illinois Limited Price Variety Stores, Robert W. Jefferson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In American society prospective workers focus much attention upon the selection of a career occupation. The choosing of an appropriate field is becoming increasingly important at an earlier age in a young person's life. The choosing of an occupation may be affected by parents, friends , aptitudes, education or skills required, and the ambition of the prospective employee. The increase or decrease of the number of workers in a given field of employment may affect the desire of prospective employees to enter a given position or level. Today we are witnessing rapid technological changes that have eliminated some jobs, created …

The Impeachment And Trial Of William Worth Belknap, Secretary Of War, Roger Dean Bridges Jan 1963

The Impeachment And Trial Of William Worth Belknap, Secretary Of War, Roger Dean Bridges

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is a great injustice to judge a person's life by the incidents that occupy a period of only one-tenth of his career. Yet that has happened in the case of William Worth Belknap. Not only has his career been judged by events covering such a small period of time, but the information that has appeared about him has been colored by the same events. Therefore, it is fitting that before Belknap's record in conjunction with the trader-post scandal as Secretary of War is examined, his total career should be sketched. To the best of this writer's knowledge, no accurate …

Studies On The Possible Transmission Of Trichopyton Equinum By The Common Stable Fly, John L. Richard Jan 1963

Studies On The Possible Transmission Of Trichopyton Equinum By The Common Stable Fly, John L. Richard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Stomoxys calcitrans failed to transmit Trichophyton equinum from infected to uninfected susceptible ponies and from infected to uninfected guinea pigs. Flies that had fed on lesions caused by this strain of T. equinum could not be demonstrated to carry the fungus. T. equinum was shown to be viable in the skin lesions by cultural methods and tissues of the lesions were shown to be infectious for guinea pigs.

The Demonstration Of Mitotic Figures In Green Algae, William R. Bowen Jan 1963

The Demonstration Of Mitotic Figures In Green Algae, William R. Bowen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Wittman's aceto-iron-haematoxylin stain was combined with Hoyer's mounting medium in a rapid method for demonstrating mitosis in the green algae. Both filamentous and unicellular forms were killed, fixed, and stained in one step with the self-mordanting stain. Cells were then washed with acetic acid and transferred directly to the water-soluble Hoyer's medium. Slides prepared in this manner are permanent. Chlorophyll was bleached from the algal cells by this medium. This revealed the stained nuclei and mitotic figures. This simplified technique is particularly suitable for student use.

Teaching And Applying The Gene-For-Gene Hypothesis For Interactions In Host:Parasite Systems, J. A. Browning Jan 1963

Teaching And Applying The Gene-For-Gene Hypothesis For Interactions In Host:Parasite Systems, J. A. Browning

Influence Of Mutable Genes On Induction Of Instability In Maize, Peter A. Peterson Jan 1963

Influence Of Mutable Genes On Induction Of Instability In Maize, Peter A. Peterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mutable systems possess transposable elements that cause mutability of associated gene loci. The En system (composed of I and En) was used to test the induction of mutability of two selected loci, A2, and C possessing the normal alleles. In a test of over five million gametes one mutable was found at each of the selected sites as well as two others, both dominant and non-allelic to the selected sites. It appears that this low rate of induction of mutability (as compared to other reports) is a consequence of the non-randomness of site selection; i.e., a certain …

Media Sterilization With Propylene Oxide, Robert C. Goss, Jack L. Marr Jan 1963

Media Sterilization With Propylene Oxide, Robert C. Goss, Jack L. Marr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sterilization of potato dextrose agar against bacteria air contaminants occurs during the 6th hour of exposure and against fungi in the 4th hour. The fungicidal activity was broader than the bactericidal activity of propylene oxide. Direct application of propylene oxide to Petri plates containing PDA was ineffective. With plastic plates a chemical reaction took place between the chemical and the plastic. In a closed system sterilization of the plates and medium was accomplished at approximately 1.25 ml of propylene oxide per liter of volume. The addition of propylene oxide directly to nutrient broth effected 90% sterility under certain conditions.

A Preliminary Study Of Chromosome Number In Oak Sprouts, David F. Conover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A preliminary study of chromosome numbers in oak sprouts was undertaken to determine the frequency of polyploid stump sprouts. A satisfactory method of making slide mounts using lateral bud primordia of newly burst buds was developed. None of the limited number examined to date was polyploid.

Demonstration Of The Transition From The Particle Approach To The Wave Approach, Richard T. Johnson Jan 1963

Demonstration Of The Transition From The Particle Approach To The Wave Approach, Richard T. Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This article describes a demonstration, suitable for elementary physics, to show the transition from the particle to the wave approach. Standing waves in a continuous string are approximated by particles fastened to a much lower density or "massless" string. The agreement between the continuous and discrete systems is good, and the wave approach is shown to be only another way of describing systems.

The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming Jan 1963

The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Guidance in the public schools of the United States is a fairly recent development. The Vocational Bureau, established by Frank Parsons in 1909, represented one of the first organized efforts to supplement home guidance. Since that time the scope of guidance has expanded from vocational guidance to include educational and socio-personal guidance as well. With the rapid increase in guidance services in schools, research concerning the guidance program has not kept pace. Much of the information and material published is based on an inadequate background of research. Authors have speculated on the values and place of guidance, but have had …

Since the advent of "Sputnik I" in October of 1957 there has been a rapid awakening of the American public to the realization that now, more than at any other time in history, the intellectual resources of the country must be developed to their maximum. The development of these resources is the special responsibility of educators.

The Development Of A Handbook For Use In The Selection Of Materials On Communism For Secondary Social Studies Classes, Richard Raymond Olmsted Jan 1963

The Development Of A Handbook For Use In The Selection Of Materials On Communism For Secondary Social Studies Classes, Richard Raymond Olmsted

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Following World War Two, the United States and the Soviet Union became the chief rivals for world leadership. Because of this, communism replaced fascism as the totalitarian ideology of most concern to Americans. This new situation brought with it a series of problems for the public schools: Should secondary schools teach about communism? How should this topic be approached? What materials should be provided for use by high school students?

For a time, public hysteria prevented the logical resolution of these problems. George B. Bruntz describes this period in the following way:

There was a time when the mere mention …
