A Critical Survey Of Recently Published Beginning Piano Methods, Margretta Denouden

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Pedagogy and materials greatly influence the results of all teaching. Changing cultural standards bring changing pedagogical techniques. Piano playing is no longer a luxury for the talented few, but rather a musical activity in which many participate. Today's piano teacher needs a method that achieves quick mastery because many attractive activities compete with piano practice for children's time.

Extracellular pectolytic and cellulolytic ensymes were produced in vitro and in vivo by Pyrenochaeta terrestris. Mycelial development was sparse on cellulose, very good on glucose and best on pectin. Cellulase synthesis was the same at culture temperatures from 15°C to 30°C while pectinase synthesis was optimum at 20°C.

Influence Of Aggregate Size On Soil Moisture Retention, P. M. Tamboli, W. E. Larson, M. Amemiya Jan 1964

Influence Of Aggregate Size On Soil Moisture Retention, P. M. Tamboli, W. E. Larson, M. Amemiya

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Soil aggregates ranging from 0.5 to 9.5 mm. in diameter from Nicollet silt loam were used to study the effect of aggregate size on soil moisture retention. It was concluded that (a) between suctions of 0.10 and 1.0 bar, the gravimetric percent moisture retained by various sized aggregates was in the following order: 0.5 < 1.0 < 2.0 ≤ 3.0 ≤ 5.0 ≤ 9.5 mm.; (b) between suctions of 1.0 and 5.0 bars, the gravimetric percent moisture retained was in the following order: 0.5 < 1.0 ≤ 2.0 ≤ 3.0 ≤ 5.0 ≤ 9.5 mm.; and (c) at suction of 10 and 15 bars, the moisture retained by aggregates of various sizes was essentially the same.

The Treatment Of Cesium Ore By Sulfur Chloride And Chlorine, C. B. Hamilton, T. L. Young, H. A. Wilhelm

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A Southern Rhodesian cesium ore containing essentially pollucite was chlorinated by a gaseous mixture of sulfur chloride and chlorine at temperatures between 500 and 700°C. The reaction products consisted principally of SiCl4, AlCl3, CsCl, and CsCl • A1Cl3. Under favorable conditions for chlorination, 17 wt % of the ore remained unreacted. The optimum conditions were the fixed bed reactor used in this study were chlorination at 650°C for 4.5 hr with an ore particle size that passes a 150 mesh sieve.

Stabilization Of Lime With A Protective Glass Coating, Stanley A. Long, Thomas D. Mcgee Jan 1964

Stabilization Of Lime With A Protective Glass Coating, Stanley A. Long, Thomas D. Mcgee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The persistent hydration of lime has severely limited its use as a refractory material. Its hydration is somewhat retarded, but not prevented by heat treatment. A number of investigators have attempted to stabilize lime with chemical additions and have met with limited success. In this investigation an attempt has been made to stabilize lime by introducing a protective coating of glass and by hot pressing to reduce the porosity. Powdered refractory glasses and granular lime were hot pressed in a graphite mold at temperatures ranging from 1250 to 1450°C. The glasses were: 1) calcium-aluminate, 2) alumina-silicate and 3) aluminophosphate. Samples …

Reaction Of Aromatic Amines With Epihalohydrins, Orm Aniline, F. C. Pennington Jan 1964

Reaction Of Aromatic Amines With Epihalohydrins, Orm Aniline, F. C. Pennington

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Published procedures for the reaction of primary aromatic amines with epihalohydrins to give 1:1 addition compounds are not generally applicable, and we have found that they frequently lead to impure products. The reactions were investigated in water, alcohol and bromobenzene solutions. A number of techniques were used to follow the reaction. Infrared spectroscopy gave qualitative data since significant changes occur in the 2.5 μ - 3.0 μ and the 10 μ - 11 μ regions of the spectrum. Thin layer chromatography made it possible to detect the formation of by-products and to determine the purity of the addition compounds. The …

Gross Structure Of The Cervical Region Of The Uterus Of White-Tailed Deer, John E. Morris Jan 1964

Gross Structure Of The Cervical Region Of The Uterus Of White-Tailed Deer, John E. Morris

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The uterine cervix of the white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, consists of the narrowed-down multiple-valved part between the vagina and the hollow thinner-walled uterus proper. The length of the cervix of a mature doe in December may vary from 40 mm to 84 mm. It is composed of four to six, but generally of five, heavily muscled valves with the openings through the valves alternating dorsally and ventrally. This arrangement of valves results in an undulating or twisted passageway through the cervix. Age and reproductive history influences variation in size. The inside surface of the cervix is covered with small longitudinal …

Occurrence Of Haemoproteus Nettionis In Wood Ducks (Aix Sponsa L.), David J. Roslien, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The protozoan Haemoproteus nettionis was found in 77 of 168 wood ducks (Aix sponsa L.) live-trapped on the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge in September, 1963. No parasitemia was found in 68 wood ducks live-trapped in July and August, 1959 at the Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge in north-central Iowa. A description of the parasite from wood ducks on the Upper Mississippi Refuge is presented.

Age And Growth Of Largemouth Bass In Clear Lake, Lowa, J. Douglas Thompson Jan 1964

Age And Growth Of Largemouth Bass In Clear Lake, Lowa, J. Douglas Thompson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Age and growth of 281 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, collected from Clear Lake during the years 1947 through 1963 were determined by the scale method. The body-scale relationship had an intercept of 1.00 inch in total length. The weight increased as the 3.091 power of the length and a slight increase in average condition was found for fish from 15 to 20 inches in length. The growth curve was somewhat above the median of 30 curves reported for other waters. Lee's phenomenon was not evident, suggesting sampling was not size selective. All year classes, 1943 to 1962, were included in …

Emphasis is placed on experiments performed by the students.

Characteristics Of Instrumentation Personnel In The Aerospace Manufacturing Industry Of The New York Metropolitan Area, Kennith Glenn Gordon Jan 1964

Characteristics Of Instrumentation Personnel In The Aerospace Manufacturing Industry Of The New York Metropolitan Area, Kennith Glenn Gordon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As the aerospace manufacturing industry of the New York Metropolitan Area becomes more deeply involved in industrial, scientific, and military activities, it seems reasonable to expect a corresponding growth in the knowledge and understanding of that industry by the engineering and education professions alike . The engineering profession would require an accurate description of the technical character, while the education profession would be concerned with developing a better understanding of the educational ramifications of this new industry. A study of the entire industry would have required the use of resources beyond the power of the writer. However, it was decided …
