Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At this writing we have approximately 111 members in good standing or should I say just standing and not doing much else. If we are to become a group of scientists who teach, then why don't we quit standing and attempt to get at least one fellow teacher in each school system to join our association?

Ways To Use The Overhead Projector, Bert A. Murphy Jan 1964

Ways To Use The Overhead Projector, Bert A. Murphy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The overhead projector, a familiar sight in many science rooms, can be used in a number of interesting ways. In chemistry, I use the overhead to demonstrate reaction rates of metals in acids. Just put your beakers (labeled with wax pencil on the bottom) on the overhead and watch the reactions take place on the wall. You can, also, demonstrate titration end points with the overhead. The colored indicators show up nicely.

The Use Of A Thermochemical Experiment In An Introductory Science Class, Verne A. Troxel Jan 1964

The Use Of A Thermochemical Experiment In An Introductory Science Class, Verne A. Troxel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An experimental method for determining heat of neutralization, in introductory science classes, with simple laboratory equipment is described. Measured values for heat of neutralization determined by this method are compared with the literature values. The experimental method used offers a suitable means for the determination of heat of neutralization.

Nematodes Associated With Plants In Lowa, Don C. Norton, W. Arden Irvine, David Castaner Jan 1964

Nematodes Associated With Plants In Lowa, Don C. Norton, W. Arden Irvine, David Castaner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During a preliminary survey of plant parasitic nematodes in Iowa, 55 species, mostly in the Tylenchoidea, were identified. Except for Longidorus, Xiphinema, and Trichodorus, the Dorylaimoidea were not considered. Most samples were taken in forage legume fields and woodlands. The seven genera encountered most frequently were the following, as expressed in percentage of total samples (1,308): Tylenchus (56), Helicotylenchus (40), Xiphinema (36), Aphelenchus (31), Tylenchorhynchus (20), Paratylenchus (14), and Pratylenchus (13). Helicotylenchus microlobus and Xiphinema americanum were among the most common and widespread plant parasitic nematodes found. While H. microlobus occurred most frequently in cultivated fields, H. platyurus was mainly …

A Quantitative Method For The Study Of Pollen And Spores In Bog Sediments, La Verne H. Durkee Jan 1964

A Quantitative Method For The Study Of Pollen And Spores In Bog Sediments, La Verne H. Durkee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A filtration method involving a membrane filter for the collection and subsequent microscopic examination of weighed, treated samples is presented. The filter and the sample collected upon it are both mounted for microscopic examination. The filter permits sufficient light passage for identification of spores and pollen upon its surface. This method permits a more accurate transfer of weighed samples from centrifuge tubes to microscope slides.

Glucose Inhibition Of Cellulose Synthesis By Pyrenochaeta Terrestris, J. C. Horton, N. T. Keen Jan 1964

Glucose Inhibition Of Cellulose Synthesis By Pyrenochaeta Terrestris, J. C. Horton, N. T. Keen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The rate of synthesis of Pyrenochacta terrestris cellulase was determined on the substrates of glucose, cellulose, and cellulose + glucose. Enzyme production was rapid on cellulose, almost negligible on glucose, and intermediate on cellulose + glucose. On the latter substrate, cellulase appeared after the near exhaustion of glucose. The authors suggest that extremely low concentrations of soluble carbohydrate regulate cellulase synthesis.

Movement And Angler Harvest Of Fishes In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Lowa, David J. Behmer Jan 1964

Movement And Angler Harvest Of Fishes In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Lowa, David J. Behmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fish tagging returns of the Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit from 1955 to the end of 1963 are summarized. Tag returns give minimum estimates of angler harvest as 4.6%, for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and 12.0% for walleyes, Stizostedion vitreum. Very few flathead catfish, Pylodictis olivaris, and smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieui, were reported caught by anglers. Channel catfish showed greatest movement of the species studied with downstream movement predominating. Walleyes moved as far as 18 miles. Smallmouth bass showed very little movement, except for one individual that moved about 40 miles. Data on both angler harvest and movement must be …
