During the summer of 1908, in connection with work at the Marine Biological Laboratory, located at Friday Harbor, Washington, two visits were made to an interesting little isle and lying several miles to the south of the Station. The position of this island gave special interest to its algal flora; and, its borders, with adjacent shorelines, constituted one of the richest collecting grounds of the region. The name “Iowa Rock" was proposed for this island, and local revenue officers have taken steps to make this name official on the government maps of that region.

Exact stratigraphic correlation is today bothering the geologist more than any other subject relating to earth knowledge. This phase of geology has, indeed, been a constant source of embarrassment ever since the science's birth more than a century and a half ago. A hundred years ago William Smith, an English engineer, discovered the use of organic remains in the determination of the relative ages of rocks; and since his time fossils have been very generally depended upon in unravelling the geologic history of the various parts of the globe.

The question of the origin of the loess of the Mississippi valley has attracted the attention of the geologists of the country for two-thirds of a century. The consideration of the question has been left almost entirely to geologists, who have offered various explanations of loess-formation, all based practically on physical grounds.

A Study Of The Variation Of The Number Of Ray Flowers Of Certain Compositae, Winfield Dudgeon

The study of the variation of the ray flowers of Rudbeckia hirta (cone flower) was taken up during the summer of 1906, at the suggestion of Dr. L. H. Pammel. The object of the study was to determine the amount of variation of the ray flowers, the variation for different localities, and any other facts that could be determined. Later, a study of Rudbeckia triloba and Helianthus grosse-serratus was taken up, with the same end in view, and that the different species might be compared.

Two years ago the author published in the proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science a list of the chemical periodicals, then present in the libraries in the State. The purpose was, of course, to make known the presence of these periodicals to chemists in the state who have occasion from time to time to use them for reference purposes. Only a very small beginning has been made of the study of the parasitic fungi of the Rocky Mountain Region. A large number of interesting parasitic diseases affecting the cultivated plants, trees and shrubs, as well as herbaceous plants, occur in the Rocky Mountain region. The diseases that I have discussed constitute only a small part of those occurring here.

The biological atmosphere is pregnant with ideas regarding species and their evolution. We are brought face to face with the "fluctuation" view of Darwin and the more recent one of "discontinuous variation" of Bateson, later called "fluctuation" by de Vries. Pangenesis has received prominent attention in the discussions regarding evolution; and Weismann formerly thought that germinal selection accounted for all evolution though, in his recent work in two volumes, he admits that conditions of environment may affect the soma when acting continuously through many generations. The first mention of pigment producing growth is of great antiquity. It aroused the suspicion of the ancients, worked on the religious zeal of the people of the Middle Ages, and today solicits the study and investigation of modern scientists. In the light of our present cultural means of study the chromogenic group of bacteria is especially interesting. The products can be easily watched and as easily segregated. Each organism can be classed together under color and can thus be definitely recognized. The B. prodigiosus is such an organism. It responds fully to laboratory methods.
