In the proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Sciences for 1910 appears ''a preliminary annotated catalogue of the recent mammals of Iowa,'' by T. VanHyning and Frank C. Pellett. The design in publishing that catalogue was for the purpose of obtaining more complete data for a monograph. It is now very gratifying to add the following notes as the results: The following species were given in that catalogue as only probably occurring in the state.

Forty million dollars is the estimated loss annually to the United States on account of weeds, according to Prof. Beal, member of the Department of Agriculture. That a generous share of this loss belongs to Iowa we must all admit, for Iowa is a great agricultural state. Since such is the case it would not seem at all strange if Iowa people should take steps to make this loss as small as possible.

When the catalogue of the recent mammals of Iowa was compiled, (See Proc. Ia. Ac. Science, Vol. XVII, pps. 211 to 218), no record of the Western Harvest Mouse, (Reithrodontomys dychei Allen), could be found for this state, but because they were known to be common in eastern Kansas, they were included as likely to be found in Iowa. In making a study of the fauna of a limited region near Atlantic, I have found them to be abundant there, equaling the common white footed mouse. Two charter members of the Academy, Dr. Samuel Calvin and Professor J. E. Todd, were primarily geologists, both, however, had such good training in the old natural history courses given in our colleges forty and fifty years ago, that they became all-round naturalists. In the early days of teaching science in Iowa, when they did their pioneer work, they had the whole range of scientific instruction along the lines of natural history and natural science. This is so broad and full a subject that the necessary limitation of time and space will compel its treatment in a somewhat bald and meager manner. It is fitting that there should be given at the outset a brief statement of what had been accomplished previous to 1886-7. In 1839 Dr. D.D. Owen organized a corps of observers with whom he made a reconnaissance of portions of Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois, the results of which were published in 1840 as a part of the senate documents. Notes On Methods For The Study Of Amphibian Eggs And Larvae, Albert Kuntz

In the preparation of amphibian eggs and larvae for histological study, the technique employed is a factor of primary importance. The amphibian egg represents the final attempt on the part of nature to produce a large yolk-laden egg in which cleavage involves the entire ovum. As a result of this method of cleavage all the embryonic tissues, during the early stages of development, contain more or less yolk. Furthermore, the ventral region of the young embryo contains a large, compact yolk-mass which is not readily penetrated by the fixing and the clearing agent, and the embryonic tissues show a greater …

Noticing that the proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science do not contain any particular enumeration of the flowers of Story County, the writer is prompted to offer the following list from the herbarium of Vene C. Gambell, who was a student at Ames during the earlier part of the decade of 1880-90. Such a list, perhaps only partial, is thus afforded the academy, and a more permanent and accessible record given the earlier work of one of the brightest young students of science in the history of the state, who, had he been permitted to round out the ordinary …

The Rank Of Necturus Among The Tailed Amphibians As Indicated By The Distribution Of Its Cranial Nerves, H. W. Norris

That "the Proteidae constitute the most primitive of the Urodeles" (Holmes, 1906) is generally accepted as an established fact. But here and there one finds dissenting opinions from this particular view. Kingsbury (1905) has given some very instructive and suggestive comparisons, chiefly of skeletal features, between Necturus and typical Urodela showing that Necturus and the larval stages of Spelerpes have so many characters in common that the similarities must stand for some degree of close relationship.

The present investigation of the development of the sympathetic nervous system in birds was undertaken in order to extend the writer's observations on the histogenesis of the sympathetic nervous system in mammals, and to point out certain morphogenetic differences in the development of the sympathetic system in birds and mammals, with a view to their phylogenetic significance.

The Staminate Flower Of Elodea, Robert B. Wylie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Vegetatively Elodea is perhaps the best known of the submersed seed plants, as it is so commonly employed in the laboratory for experiment and study. The flowers, however, have received proportionately less study since they are small and inconspicuous and seldom appear in the usual laboratory aquaria. The purpose of this paper is to call attention to an unusual form of staminate flower recently noted.
