Of all biological problems none is of more importance and interest to the mass of mankind than that dealing with the laws of evolution. To the biologist, of course, these laws are of prime importance, as expressing the ultimate result of all life processes. But I refer here rather to the widespread interest among all classes of educated people, due, I believe, to a feeling that as our human civilization is advancing in conformity with these laws, a fuller knowledge of them might enable us the better to guide and control our progress in the future.

Noticeable among recent movements tending to promote the interests of biological science is the development of the inland biological station. Any arrangement whereby students and teachers may work under proper guidance out of doors, in nature's own laboratory, should be encouraged. Our own state made a beginning last summer at Lake Okoboji. I sincerely hope it may become permanent and that many teachers in Iowa will avail themselves of the opportunity to combine a pleasurable outing with profitable field and laboratory work in Natural Science.

In Iowa, with our nearly 500 feet of Devonian sediments, we are not apt to think very much about a possibility of the lack of this great system soon after the boundaries of our state are passed. Yet the possibility is an actuality. In west-central Missouri it has been lately found that no rocks of Devonian age are represented. The lower Carboniferous strata rests directly upon Ordovician dolomites.

During the summer session of the University of Montana Biological Station, we found what is believed to be a new hydra. It was taken in large numbers from Echo Lake, Flathead County, Montana. It has never been found in any of the other numerous streams or lakes in this vicinity, and so far as is known no other hydra has ever been collected in the state.

Calkins, while preparing his bibliography of North American lichens. These I added to some before noted in my own library and began a careful search which extended through the summers of 1897 and 1898; examining also the general library of the University of Minnesota.

The main object of the present communication is to formulate, briefly, certain results which have been obtained in the course of recent attempts to parallel some of the geological terranes in the Mississippi Valley. The suggestions they offer appear to have a much more than local bearing, and to affect the stratigraphy of the entire region. They also have an important influence upon the whole problem of general correlation and, perhaps, also, even upon our present system of geological classification.

By the term formaldehyde, I wish to designate a 40 per cent solution of the gas formaldehyde in water. Several articles answering to this description have been placed on the market under trade names such as the "Formalin" of Schering, the "Formol" of Merck, and the "Formalose" of Richards & Co. So far as I have tested these various preparations, they all agree as to composition, and yield perfectly similar results. My attention was first directed to formaldehyde as a morphological reagent in July, 1894, and I have been using it in my work, and have experimented with it in …
