Collecting Contests As A Means Of Increasing Student Interest In Biological Subjects, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For some twenty years the author has been organizing contests among his students in Botany, Zoology, Bird Study, Tree Study and Entomology as a means of encouraging a greater interest in field work with better observation and more intelligent understanding. Some of the schemes employed may at first glance seem childish. That the plan gets results is attested by the working knowledge of plants and animals acquired by these students and what they have been able to do with this knowledge as teachers, research workers and in other fields since leaving college.

In 1927 the foundation stock for this experiment was picked at random from the guinea pig colony of the Genetics Department at Iowa State College. Since then three generations of individuals, selected both for resistance and susceptibility to protein reaction, have been obtained.

So said that profound student of insects, Fabre, after an immense amount of experimentation. No one has written so entertainingly about insects as has this great Frenchman; few have equaled and none excelled him in the wealth and variety of his observations upon them. But he was trained as a physicist and a mathematician and consequently, brought into his biological studies the viewpoint of the inorganic sciences.

There have been numerous attempts in recent years to develop a method which would indicate accurately the phosphorus needs of the soil. Biological methods and chemical methods have been suggested, but at some time or other all the methods have failed to give satisfactory results.

About Atmospheric Electricity, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Our atmosphere is electrified at all times. During the summer the average increase of potential from the earth's surface up is about 100 volts for one meter of ascent. This potential gradient, however, diminishes with increasing altitude until at the height of one mile it is only 25 volts per meter. During the winter the atmosphere is much more in tensely electrified. The average increase of electrical potential near the earth 's surface during this season is as much as 250 volts per meter of ascent.

It has long been known that straw or strawy manure when added to the soil may bring about a reduction in the nitrate content of the soil due to a stimulation of certain biological processes. The conclusion has been drawn that the nitrate may disappear as a result of denitrification, nitrate reduction or nitrate assimilation.

There is probably no other disease problem of greater significance economically than that of corn. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to sketch briefly the progress that has been made in this study and to point, in a general way, to some phases of the problem that are immediately before us. Because of its complexity and the misconception as to its significance, a beginning in this field was tardy. In the October number of this bulletin, in a discussion of the influence of environment upon the growth and development of plants, the statement was made that, on the whole, plants are quite well adapted to the conditions under which they grow. As to the manner by which this ''fitness” has arisen there are some differences of opinion and, in the opinion of the writer, a great many misunderstandings. This is a question to which no ''cut-and-dried'' answer can be given but to which a fundamental principle of biology may be applied.

Many educated people do not realize that a plant may be diseased as truly as a human being; at least they have little conception of the nature and significance of plant disease.
