The outline is arranged in the form of group projects and in the order which the writer thinks is best for good teaching results. The apparatus listed can be purchased in one form or another from such supply houses as the Central Scientific Co. or the Welch Apparatus Co. of Chicago, Ill.

General science is, as the name suggests, a study of the practical applications of the physical and natural sciences. To be a good teacher of the subject one should have a working understanding of the fundamental principles of physics, chemistry, biology, physiography, astronomy and climatology. General science, when taught as such in the grades or junior high school, should aid boys and girls to interpret, in an intelligent and meaningful way, the application of these principles to everyday life.

Because of their relationship to dangerous human parasites, insects have been responsible for the death of more people than all other animals put together. Confirmation of this astounding statement can be seen in the close relationship between houseflies and typhoid fever, between rat fleas and plague, tsetse flies and sleeping sickness, and that between mosquitoes and yellow fever and malaria.

Have you ever asked your pupils the question, what American has contributed most to the development of electrical science? Very likely a great majority would answer without hesitation, Edison, the inventor of the incandescent light. Some might answer, Bell, the inventor of the telephone. A few, the radio fans, might say De Forest, the inventor of the three electrode tube. An occasional one might even answer Franklin, the first great American scientist, who drew electricity from the clouds, and showed that lightning and the "electric fluid" are the same. Not one, I am sure, would ever mention Joseph Henry.

Most of our universities and colleges have summer schools planned especially for teachers and I know of no better way to spend at least a part of your summer than at one of these.

Lecture experiments demand more time, require higher technical skill, and afford greater pupil interest than any other phase of chemistry teaching. As a corollary, we may add that they are most neglected, but if you name the teachers who are noted for their interesting, instructive, and skillful classroom demonstrations, you are calling the roll of chemistry teachers of the first rank.

The study of birds should certainly form an important unit of every course in high school biology. Furthermore, this study should be continued through the entire school year in order to secure the most desirable results. The fall is an excellent time to begin the study because the number of birds to be found is not so great as to ca use confusion and the students will be able to become familiar with the means of identification and the common recognition marks of many of our common birds.

Man constitutes no exception to this statement, and it is my purpose in this article to deal with a few of the insects commonly found in or around our homes. Perhaps the most familiar of all household insects is the housefly.
