With all due respect to the author of the above and the several brilliant things he has written, bosh! The sentence makes interesting reading, and doubtless returned the writer several cents per word, besides giving his doting henchmen many chuckles at the expense of the puerile pedagogue. But mere pertness of expression connotes neither truth nor profundity, and had the writer of the above sentence set about deliberately to formulate a fundamental untruth, he could not have fashioned one whose Munchausen quality was more obtrusively obvious.

Before I begin the serious discussion of this topic may I make a few explanatory statements? In the first place I realize that the title I have chosen is misleading in that it may convey the impression that we geologists are, or think we are, thoroughly familiar with the strata beneath our feet. New Data On The Upper Devonian Of Iowa, S. W. Stookey

A recently discovered exposure of fossiliferous beds of Upper Devonian age in Iowa County, Iowa, containing a rich and well preserved fauna, is believed to be of unusual interest and significance. These beds were uncovered by the road grader and extend along the north side of the road across Section 29, Amana Township, for a distance of about a mile. The exposure begins a few rods west of the limits of Middle Amana and with exception of two or three interruptions by ravines, is continuous to the point where it disappears under the Hohe Amana outlier of Des Moines sandstone. …

The data used in this study are taken from the 1928 and 1929 records of the meat fed Wistar rats in the Animal Research Laboratory of the Foods and Nutrition Department at Iowa State College. The records of 149 animals were available, unequally divided as to sex, and including four generations. The weight of the animals at 28 days of age was recorded with the weight each week thereafter for six successive weeks.

This statistical study was prompted by a desire to know more definitely just what courses are being offered in the field of Biology; to gain a better understanding and appreciation of some of the varied problems which are common to the administrative heads of Biology departments; to offer a bird's eye view of curricular content to those students who are looking forward to teaching Biology or administering a department in some college devoted more exclusively to undergraduate rather than graduate study; and to obtain, with some degree of reliability, a standard of comparison for our own department.

ln the last number of the Science Bulletin [vol.4 no.3] we discussed Faraday's two experiments in current induction. It is interesting to recall at this time that September 21 of this year a centennial celebration of Faraday's discovery was held in Queen's Hall, London. Sir William Bragg, a renowned English physicist, gave the address on this occasion. This address was broadcast generally in America, being transmitted across the ocean by radio.

In recent years there has been a decided trend in high schools the country over toward general science, and away from the particular sciences, physics, chemistry, biology, etc. The proponents of general science seem convinced that this is due to a better choice of subject matter in their field, and to better methods of presentation. However this may be, it will certainly be well for those of us who have to do with the teaching of the special sciences to subject our own work to critical examination. We should aim to discover our faults of whatever kind, and eliminate them.

There is nothing in the Biology course which can take the place of carefully planned and directed field work. The students should be encouraged to observe carefully and accurately for themselves and be given every opportunity to become acquainted with living things in their natural surroundings. The aquarium and terrarium can be made to supply much interesting material for study and should be in the laboratory whenever possible.

In the May Number of the Science Bulletin, the writer gave a brief outline of the historical development of our present knowledge of the magnetic properties of an electric current. In tracing this development from an experimental point of view, a brief statement was made of the contributions of each of the following renowned scientists: Oersted, Arago, Ampere, Faraday and Henry. In this article of the May Number no reference was made to current induction as one of the magnetic effects of an electric current.

Upon his refusal of her request - for cats have a way of becoming scarce when wanted for anatomical purposes - she said caustically: "You biologists are regular butchers. Unless one is going to be a doctor or a teacher of biology, what good can it possibly do to know the insides of a cat'?"

The high school has placed a great deal of emphasis on certain extracurricular activities such as athletics, debating, dramatics, etc., but very little attention has been given to any extra-curricular activities in science. Since science does play such an important place in our lives, it seems desirable to consider the possibilities of some extra-curricular activities in high school science. The high school science club offers such an opportunity.

The State Department of Public Instruction has recently completed a far-reaching and valuable contribution to the curriculums of our state system of schools. With the cooperation of many prominent educators of Iowa, courses of study for the grades and departmental courses for the High Schools have been carefully prepared and made available to all teachers. Among these outlines is one for chemistry teachers. According to policy, these course outlines are distributed gratis to the school and become the property of the district.
