The firebrat, one of the minor household pests of Iowa, is an insect of more than usual scientific interest. Besides being remarkably thermophilic it represents the primitive order of the Apterygota, the Thysanura, the biology of which should have considerable bearing in the fields of insect physiology and phylogeny.

To my memory comes the scene of a little group of college students nearing the end of a long morning tramp through the tall dew wet grass of early spring. We were out on a bird trip and had gone several miles through the woods. The physical condition of the little company would not be expected to inspire enthusiasm. As we reached the city park and found still more warblers breakfast gathering in the trees, one of the young women cried out with an exultation never to be forgotten, "Oh! I know I shall enjoy this all my life."

Carbon dioxide production in the soil has long been regarded as a measure of biological activity. It has been suggested that oxygen absorption might give a more reliable measure of the total action of microorganisms than carbon dioxide production. Since the amount of oxygen consumed by aerobic organisms under constant environmental conditions bears a definite relation to the amount of carbon dioxide produced, it would seem that the ratio of carbon dioxide produced to oxygen consumed would show something concerning the nature of the organic matter of the soil, its composition and rate of decomposition and, therefore, be a better …

The Cytology Of Homothallism, J. E. Sass

Coprinus sterquilinus, a homothallic Hymenomycete, has a typical diploid nuclear cycle i.e., nuclear fusion occurs in the basidium, followed by the formation of a nuclear tetrad and four spores. Each spore receives one nucleus which divides at least once. The chromosomes are too small and poorly defined to use the chromosome count to establish the time and place of meiosis, but the fact that each spore, though receiving but one nucleus, carries the full complement of sex factors, suggests that disjunction of sex factors does not occur in the basidium. Disjunction, and possibly numerical reduction may be delayed until nuclear …

Steric Hindrance As A Factor In The Hydrolytic Stability Of Aromatic Ketimines, J. B. Culbertson, Rachel Albright, Drew Baker, Paul Sweitzer

A comparison of the velocities of hydrolysis of the 2-, the 3- and the 4-methyl diphenyl ketimine hydrochlorides, in which the velocity of the first is very much slower than either of the other two, suggests steric hindrance. The very slow rate of hydrolysis of 2, 4, 6-trihydroxy diphenyl ketimine hydrochloride has been reported by one of us. This slow rate may be accounted for on the basis of the multiple opportunities for tautomerism involving the very stable enamine forms. We have recently found 2-methyl, 4, 6-dihydroxy di phenyl (orcinyl phenyl) ketimine hydrochloride to be even more slowly hydrolyzed. It …

The Determination Of Manganese In Biological Material, Norman Ashwell Clark

One of the best methods for the determination of manganese in very small amounts in biological material is the adaptation of Willard's oxidation of the Mn in acid solution by KIO4 , and a comparison in Nessler tubes of the color produced, with a known standard similarly treated. Skinner and Peterson showed that if animal tissue was ashed in a muffle furnace and extracted with H2PO4 , the KIO4 oxidized the Mn in the solution without loss of color. They found 0.01 mg Mn in 50 cc. solution gave a readable color in Nessler tubes against an …

The cornfield lay above a low bluff overlooking a swamp, and for half an hour I had tracked that cottontail through a perfect maze of weeds and cornstalks. Warming with the chase, I was determined to have that particular bunny if it took me all morning. if I had not known better, I would have thought he was teasing me. Time and again, his tracks led into a bunch of grass with every indication that he was there for the day, but always they led out on the other side.

This organization is to give the clubs affiliating the advantages that can come from a state organization. Its success depends upon the response of the high school clubs themselves. It is to be your organization and this section of the Bulletin is to serve as a means for the exchange of ideas between clubs and to give suggestions as to aids and helps for programs. Contributions from clubs are desired.

A few years ago when the author was teaching biology in a suburban high school of Chicago, the tussock moth became a menace to the shade trees in that vicinity. The biology students took up the problem of the tussock moth and how to eradicate it. The life history and habits of the moth were studied. Collections were made to show the life history. The Commercial Club became interested and a talk on the moth was given by a club member at one of their meetings.

Posters furnish excellent illustrative material for club programs and will add much interest to the work. There are usually members of the club who have artistic ability and can make use of their ability in this way, but it is not necessary to be an artist in order to make good posters or cartoons, as excellent results can be obtained by cutting advertisements from magazines and arranging them and pasting them on cardboard so as to illustrate various subjects. The value of the poster does not depend upon its artistic side but in the clever representation and emphasis of some …
