A Twenty Years Phenological Record Of The Spring Flowering Plants Of Henry County, Ellsworth Dodds, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Each spring since 1915 a record of the date of the first appearance of flowers of our seed bearing plants has been kept. This has been handled through a contest with the students in the botany classes. Reports on the comparative dates for some of the more representative species were made in 1918 and in 1924.

An Effect Of Cathode Rays On Photographic Paper, P. H. Carr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When photographic printing out or developing out paper is exposed to cathode rays in air (Lenard rays) for a sufficient time, it undergoes a color change similar to but not quite like that produced by exposure to light. It has been noted that, when a sample of the photographic paper is exposed to Cathode rays, it is rendered relatively insensitive to subsequent exposure to light. This peculiar effect is not observed when developing agents are used on the developing out paper, nor is it observed on blue print paper. Some Methods Of Labeling Nature Trails, John Moore

For several years the students of botany of Iowa Wesleyan College have maintained a nature trail in the Oakland Mills State Park. The writer is one of the three students appointed to take care of this work for the current year. When the trails were first inaugurated it was necessary to select the course, lay out the path and erect signs to keep the visitors going in the right direction, as well as to label items of interest. The M-Series Absorption Spectrum Of Metallic Bismuth, W. D. Phelps

Using a Siegbahn vacuum spectrometer and thin films of bismuth produced by sputtering, the wavelengths of the five x-ray M-absorption edges of bismuth 83 have been measured. For the edges M₁ and M₂, which had not previously been measured, the discrepancy between the computed and observed values is of the order of magnitude of experimental error while the usual large M₄ and M₅ discrepancies, first observed in this laboratory on other elements, are verified for bismuth. Using a method similar to that previously reported by Steinbach (1933), Pumphrey and Francis (1933), and others the authors have studied the effect of different carbon monoxide-oxygen mixtures upon the inherent E. M. F. of pieces of isolated frog skin.

Influence Of Nitrogenous Compounds On The Respiratory Quotient Of Rhizobium, D. A. Anderson, R. H. Walker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Using the Warburg micro-manometric technique, the influence of nitrogenous compounds on the respiratory activities of the legume root-nodule bacteria has been recently studied. It was observed in these studies that the form in which the nitrogen was supplied to the organisms greatly influenced the amount of oxygen which they consumed. The fact was apparent that the effect of the nitrogen source might be due either to a stimulation or depression of the respiration of the organisms or to a marked change in its respiratory quotient; i.e., the ratio of oxygen consumed to carbon dioxide produced, CO₂/O_2.
