Animal breeding is is an old art, which long ago developed far beyond the scientific knowledge of the subject. By actual experience men built up certain rules as to what practices were or were not good procedure for a given set of conditions. Man naturally devised philosophical explanations which more or less satisfied his intellect as he went along. But it would be a far stretch of the imagination to call those explanations scientific.

Forest Communities Of The Quetico Provincial Park Of Ontario, R. V. Drexler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The observations outlined in this paper are the result of trips in the Quetico during the summers of 1934, 1938 and 1939. A study of the vascular vegetation was not the primary purpose of these trips, but it was necessary to form some opinion concerning the forest communities. Numerous studies have been published concerning the Coniferous Forest, but none of these papers apply particularly to the forest communities of the Quetieo.

A Critical Evaluation Of Study Habit Inventories, Irene Mammen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Out of a list of 60 items having to do with study habits and study conditions, as are used in certain tests, 44 related to high or low-grade-average categories. Fifty-five per cent of the items were found to differentiate boys only while 26.1 per cent differentiated girls only. Approximately 10 per cent were equivalent in placing the two sexes and about 10 per cent operated in an opposite way. There is some evidence that good study habits are more important in college than in high school for attaining good grades. The study also suggests the need for an evaluation of …

Effects Of Ultracentrifuging Oxytricha, Harold W. Kirshenblit

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Oxytricha, a hypotrich having two macronuclei, was ultracentrifuged at a force of about 50,000 times gravity for five to ten minutes. It was found that the macronuclei and micronuclei are of different relative densities, the macronuclei being drawn to the centrifugal pole by high-speed centrifuging, while the micronuclei appear to be only slightly affected by the forces used. Oxytricha may be stratified and torn in two, and the fragments are able to move about independently of each other. Fragments without marconuclei are capable of normal activity, the external body form being regained in from fifteen minutes to an hour or …

For ten years it has been well known to geologists that all of the State of Iowa was at one time or another covered by Pleistocene ice. The northeastern corner of the State is usually mapped as unglaciated - a part of "the unglaciated area" which includes adjacent corners of Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. At no time was this area an island in a sea of ice as the maps suggest. It was once swept on the west by a glacier that extended far to the south. At another time the area was swept by ice on the east. The …

A survey of the native flora of Clay and Palo Alto Counties with reference to plants useful to waterfowl includes the plants useful for food, for nesting materials and for cover. The plants are listed systematically as well as referred to associations. The range of distribution for flora of the state has been extended and some plants apparently new to the state have been recorded.

An Apparatus For Measuring Tolerance To Light And Visual Efficiency Under Different Conditions Of Illumination, Glenn O. Martinson

Illumination in relation to automobile driving is considered one of the most important problems of highway safety. Because of contrast between source of light and background, lights which give sufficient illumination are considered blinding. An apparatus is described which makes possible the accurate measurement of tolerance to light under different atmospheric conditions. Calibration of the light falling on the test object and the light impinging on the retina makes possible measurement of the optimal conditions of illumination under different degrees of darkness. The light measurements are made by electrometric methods.

A Preliminary Report On The Use Of Parasitic Nematodes Of The Earthworm For Class Study And Cytological Research, Norman M. Sulkin

A preliminary investigation shows the nematode parasites of the earthworm to be excellent material for cytological and embryological research, in addition to being useful as material for class room study. Their neglected study has probably been due to lack of suitable culture methods. It has been found that the nematodes will live on a 2% agar plate upon which small bits of red beef are placed. For optimum prolificity, the temperature should be kept constant at 15° C. With the use of this method, the author has kept a rapid growing culture alive for the past six months. The ova …

A Chimeric Tulip, Karl A. Stiles

An unusual yellow Cottage tulip which was collected by Norman Stookey in the spring of 1934 was given to the author. All the petals of this tulip were yellow except one which was one-half yellow and one-half red. Inasmuch as the bulb from which this tulip developed has not produced another such chimeric flower it appears probable that it is due to a somatic mutation or a somatic non-disjunction of the chromosomes.

The particular part of this rather broad subject to which I want to call your attention this afternoon, concerns the synthesis of vitamins in plants, and some factors which influence their production. I shall illustrate from a number of experiments, including those which we have carried out at Iowa State College on the formation of vitamins A, B₁ and C. Although some vitamins, for example A and D, may be manufactured in the animal body, the ultimate source of most of the vitamins is the plant kingdom. Animals get their vitamins either directly from plants, or indirectly by varying …

Although pages have been written in psychological text books on compensation, a survey of the literature shows an extremely meagre amount of experimental data. The present study is an attempt to formulate some of the problems of compensation into experimental form. Forty subjects were given a series of laboratory tests in which accuracy and speed were compared under normal conditions and under conditions of distraction. Thirty-one of the same subjects were given a written test of the questionnaire type which was divided into three arbitrary categories; traffic compensation (T), social compensation (S), and industry or ambition (I). Preliminary Evaluation Of A Test For Biological Background, Richard Schweet, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A test, composed of 140 items, including names of men and terms associated with biology, was given to 65 undergraduate students with various majors and 25 graduate students in zoology. The undergraduates' records were analyzed to ascertain the effect of giving the test, with and without time limits, to comparable groups. On the basis of data obtained, a revision of the test was made using 100 select items. This revision was given to 18 graduate and 33 undergraduate students. Correlation of odd versus even items for the separate groups yielded reliability coefficients of + .90 after correction for length. A …
