A Preliminary Report On The Flora Of Southeastern Iowa - Part I, Charles L. Gilly, Malcom E. Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While the authors were undergraduate students in the Biology Department at Parsons College, a major part of their duties as departmental assistants was the preparation of a herbarium of southeastern Iowa plants. Extensive collections were made in Jefferson and Van Buren Counties, and some collecting was done in the neighboring counties. The project was begun in the spring of 1933 under the direction of the late Dr. Charles Carter, then Head of the Department of Biology at Parsons College. As originally planned, the scope of the project included the ten southeasternmost counties in the state, but only a few specimens …

In predicting scholarship in college practically every known fact about a student has been studied in an effort to find the variables most predictive of success. Age, height, weight, religion, father's occupation, education of parents, and size of family have been extensively used to predict college success. Prediction through the use of tests has been studied in practically every college from the smallest junior college to the largest universities. The interest, and it has been tremendous, shown in the prediction of college success is closely related to the progress made in devising more accurate measurement devices. Beginning in 1917 with …

Herbert V. Hake attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, where he earned his master's degree in scenic design in 1933. In the summer of 1936, he began his career at the Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) with the Theater Department. From 1938 to 1942 he served as technical director, scenic designer, and instructor of speech courses. He was a pioneer in radio and television.

Notes On The Grasses Of Southeastern Iowa, Robert G. Brown

In 1933, Cratty (6) listed the grasses of Iowa, represented by specimens in the Iowa State College herbarium, in his paper "THE IOWA FLORA." Twenty-eight years earlier, Pammell, Ball and Lamson-Scribner (23) published ''THE GRASSES OF IOWA, PART II,' the only more or less complete treatment of Iowa grasses. Additional specimens of grasses have been collected in numerous localities since the appearance of these two papers; changes in the Rules of Botanical Nomenclature, together with detailed studies of certain genera, have made necessary some changes in the scientific names of Iowa grasses. Animal muscle proteins are stated by Rose (10) to contain 21 amino acids of which 10 must be derived directly from the food while 11 can be modified by transamination provided some other primary amino acid is supplied. Although storage and particularly seed proteins are relatively simple in their structural pattern and amino acid content, herbivorous, and eventually all, animals derive their amino acids entirely from plant products. It seems reasonable to assume, therefore, that leaf proteins are comparable in complexity and amino acid distribution to muscle proteins.

A Recount By Species Of The Trees Of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Jean Morrow, H. E. Jaques

During the winter of 1924-25, a count by species of the trees within the city limits of Mt. Pleasant was made by the students of the Biology Department of Iowa Wesleyan College. A recount of the trees in this area was made by the students during the winters of 1945-46-47. All trees over four inches in diameter at breast height were counted.

The Iowa Secondary School Curriculum Program involves providing curriculum materials in all areas of high school instruction. Traditional subject matter areas have been maintained, not because we have assurance that this offers the best procedure in secondary education, but because under present conditions it probably affords the most practical and feasible procedure. The areas treated are broken down as follows: English and speech, language, science, mathematics, social studies, practical arts, fine arts, physical education and health, guidance, and extra-curricular activities.

When our committee submitted a list of objectives for high school biology to one of our colleagues for criticism, he commented in the margin, "Making objectives has been a favorite indoor sport of educators for a number of years; but attaining the objectives is a different species of animal!" From the outset of our investigation we have been aware that we could contribute very little to science teaching by producing a better set of aims or objectives. Basic Concepts In The Interpretation Of Visual Phenomena, Theodore Louis Jahn

During the past decade several attempts have been made to formulate equations which would explain certain visual phenomena, namely flicker fusion frequency, brightness discrimination, visual acuity, and instantaneous thresholds as functions of intensity, and light and dark adaptation as functions of time. These various equations are based on several fundamental concepts regarding the mechanism by which the visual sensation is determined. Each concept has been explained by the original author at the time the theory was proposed, but no comparison of these basic ideas has yet appeared in the literature. An Ant Colony Which Moved Over Two Hundred Feet, R. M. Sallee, R. L. King

Colonies of Formica rufa melanotica Emery construct the most conspicuous ant nests in the region of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory; 85 nests of this species have been found in 40 acres of prairie. These nests are often two feet in diameter: a thatched mound composed of short lengths of grass, twigs and other plant debris; well-developed mounds are often 18 inches high with an outer rampart of earth upon which the plant material forms a thatch. More numerous than these nests of melanotica are the smaller earthen mounds of the prairie ant, Formica cinerea neocinerea Wheeler: 72 nests of the …
