A Study Of The Effect Of Penicillin And Dihydrostreptomycin On Protozoa With Special Reference To The Problems Of Bacteria-Free Culture And Speciation In Euglena, Carol May Goodwin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Among the many phenomena observed in studies with streptomycin and penicillin, the apparent resistance of certain protozoa to antibiotics is of interest to the protozoologist. If this resistance exists in the case of all protozoa, then it should be possible to develop a technique involving antibiotics which can be used for obtaining bacteria-free cultures of any protozoan. The concentrations of penicillin and streptomycin used by various authors in attempts to effect isolation of specific protozoans are presented in Table 1. The organic phosphorus compounds hexaethyl tetraphosphate (HETP) and tetraethyl pyrophosphate (TEPP) are the active components of certain commercial insecticide formulations and have been shown to be toxic, at relatively low concentrations, to a rather wide array of organisms (Hall, 1950; Hall and Jacobson, 1948a: Hall, 1951; Harris, 1947; McIlrath, 1950; Smith et. al., 1948a and l 948b). From their work on the chemical and insecticidal properties of these compounds, Hall and Jacobson (1948a, 1948b) concluded that the so-called HETP is not a specific compound but actually a mixture of esters owing its biological potency to the TEPP that it contains. …

Algae are being used more frequently in the attack on an ever widening variety of biological problems. We find them in mam laboratories as experimental organisms in the study of the fundamentals of photosynthesis, mineral nutrition, and genetics. Their present uses and potential uses commercially such as, sources of food, in food processing, and in industrial processes are growing steadily in number. Because of the increasing interest in them experimentally and practically, a better understanding of their culture is imperative. Several forms such as, Chlorella, Scenedesmus, and some of the Cyanophyta have been cultivated for laboratory purposes with success. …

"Little is known of the bottom fauna of the locality." This passage is taken from an Extension Bulletin of the State University of Iowa which describes the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji and its facilities for biological investigations. It should be stressed at the outse.t that there are few lakes which do not share with Okoboji this relatively unexplored state of their bottom biota. The family Folliculinidae is composed of ciliated Protozoa which belong to the order Spirotrichida. The family is characterized by a flask-shaped, transparent lorica and by a peristomial field drawn out into two wing-like projections which can be extended beyond the aperature of the lorica when the animal is feeding, and can be withdrawn into the lorica when the animal contracts. The known species of this family are all marine except for one fresh water form, Folliculina boltoni. This unique member of the family has been found in Europe and South America, and Wailes (1928) described it from a fresh …

During the winter of 1947 the telephone line of a police station in the city of Balboa, Canal Zone, suddenly went dead. The station was serviced by an underground cable encased in a lead pipe of three quarters of an inch in diameter. Workmen began to dig up the cable and after a prolonged search found the cause of the disturbance. A colony of ants had attacked the lead shell of the cable, had severed it effectively in one place and had cut deep notches in several other places. In recent years the raccoon (Procyon lotor) has become more and more popular with 'coon hunters in Iowa. This is also true in many other Midwest and southern states. This increased interest in the raccoon as a game animal, plus the almost phenomenal increase in its numbers, has helped to focus much attention on this animal throughout the United States. Many papers dealing with various phases of the raccoon's life history and habits have appeared in the past few years. The term "biologist" may suggest a person who didn't quite succeed as a specialist, for biology after all is not a single science but a series of related sciences, whose relationships are not always obvious. The small liberal arts college biology professor and some of the naturalists have probably come closest to the category of "biologist," although neither· has been customarily designated specifically as a "biologist." In the past two decades a small number of private entomologists, usually known as "consulting entomologists," have appeared and managed in most cases not much more than barely to exist financially. Activity Patterns Of Some Clear Lake, Iowa, Fishes, James G. Sieh, John Parsons

The fish populations in Clear Lake, in north central Iowa, are being studied annually by various members of the Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit to determine the changes in species composition, growth rates, condition, year class abundance, and other measures of value in fisheries biology (Bailey and Harrison, 1945; Lewis and Carlander, 1948; Cleary, 1949; Carlander and Cleary, 1949). In connection with these investigations, experimental gill nets were set in various parts of the lake. Since the nets were usually lifted at two-hour intervals, the times at which the fish were caught were recorded, thereby giving a measure of the …

Dickinson County is in the northernmost tier of counties in the state of Iowa, it being the third county to the east from the western border of the state. It is bounded on the north by Minnesota, west by Osceola Co., south by Clay Co., and east by Emmet Co. It touches O'Brien Co. at the southwest corner, and Palo Alto Co. at the southeast.
