Seventeen different kinds of nematocysts have been described and classified by Weill (1930) on the basis of the characteristics of the discharged tube. Only four of these are known to be present on hydras, namely, volvents (desmonemes), streptoline glutinants (holotrichous isorhizas), stereoline glutinants (atrichous isorhizes), and penetrants (stenoteles). The discharged penetrant (fig. 1) consists of the capsule a, butt, which is composed of the shaft b, stylet c, spinneret d, and tube e. For some time past this writer has been interested in the potassium content of muscle. When this interest was first aroused he became aware of the need for a satisfactory method for determining quantitatively the amounts of potassium in a given muscle. So there ensued a search of the literature. This yielded three fundamental methods, each of which had its advantages and disadvantages. The Perchlorate and the Chloroplatinate methods were not used because of the technical difficulties presented by them. Jacobs and Hoffman (1931) had used the Cobaltinitrite methods with muscle and had obtained good results. So their method was …

Banded Waterfowl Recovered In Iowa (1948-1951), James G. Sieh

Waterfowl banded throughout continental North America have been recovered in Iowa. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, via the Bird-Banding Office, Pautuxent, Maryland, has supplied the State Conservation Commission with 340 waterfowl recoveries reported from Iowa since 1948. These recoveries represented 256 mallards (Figure 1), 26 pintails, 15 blue-winged teal, and 11 black ducks. Ten other species of ducks were represented by only 25 recoveries. Six Canada geese and one coot complete the. list of waterfowl recoveries in this report.

In this paper an attempt has been made to present an adequate list of Lygaeidae found in Iowa and Illinois, and to indicate what is known of the intrastate distributions of the various species. This paper is limited to geographic considerations and, in this sense, assumes the character of a "local list"' as no biological or ecological considerations are discussed. It is felt that our knowledge of the Nearctic Lygaeidae has reached a degree of maturity where knowledge of state and lesser faunal areas is essential to encourage the badly needed bionomic work that should develop with a relatively stable …

The number of quail that hatch, and live until the hunting season is determined by several factors. Weather is the most widespread of these factors. (Stoddard, 1936). A study was made in 1950 and 1951 to learn how variations in the weather correspond to variations in the Iowa quail populations.

The role of the epidermis in leaf organization has not been extensively explored. As a surface covering it affords some protection, but this is due chiefly to the cuticular film which protects both the epidermal layer and underlying cells. The importance of the epidermis, as a tissue of living cells, is probably much greater than has been generally realized. For this reason observations and experiments providing further information about the epidermis are of special interest. Our knowledge about the mechanism of protein synthesis, one of the most important biochemical problems, is still extremely limited. It is evident from the very nature of proteins, their complexity and specificity, that the problem of protein synthesis presents numerous aspects. Theories of a template method of protein synthesis in the sense of Langmuir-Schaefer or Pauling are designed to explain the specificity of proteins. This paper will deal with only one aspect of protein synthesis, the mode of formation of the amide (peptide) linkage, which is the most typical linkage of every protein. An Unusually Large Population Of Fish In A Gravel Pit Lake, Kenneth D. Carlander

Lakes in gravel pits are usually relatively unproductive but Ruth's Lake near Marshalltown was found to have a larger fish population than has been reported for any other water, except for carp ponds where the fish are artificially fed. When this lake was treated with rotenone, over 1200 pounds of fish per acre, were collected, compared to the 100 to 400 pounds per acre found in most lakes and ponds (Carlander, 1950).

The existence of vitamin B₁₂, often designated the antipernicious anemia or animal protein factor, as another member of the expanding family of vitamins is well established. As implied from its nomenclature, it belongs to the water soluble B-vitamins, but unlike most other vitamins in this group its chemical structure is unknown. Its nutritional importance to man, his monogastric farm animals and his poultry is recognized. For the present, at least, the supply consists primarily of concentrates. It is not to be inferred that crystalline B₁₂ is unavailable. On the contrary, however, the supply is very limited and …

More Mixed Colonies In Ants, R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

At the meeting of the Academy two years ago (King, '49) nine mixed colonies of ants containing Formica reflexa and Formica fusca were reported. Seven of these had failed to survive the winter following their discovery; of the other two, found in 1948, only one survived the winter of 48-49 and contained only F. reflexa in 1949. This pure colony of F. reflexa, the only one ever reported, was deserted by the early summer of 1950. Two new mixed colonies were found in 1949 near the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Dickinson County, Iowa: only one of these survived the winter …

The State Conservation Commission has investigated the waterfowl kill in Iowa during each open season since 1948. This study has established the species composition of the total waterfowl bag taken in Iowa during the open season, and the percentage of each species taken. In addition, the number of hours required by the average. Iowa waterfowl hunter to take a duck or goose has been determined for each of the three open seasons. An analysis of the data for these three years is in order.

In recent years there has developed a keen interest in the limits through which chemical constitutional changes in biological potent drugs may be carried without great loss of their characteristic pharmacological activity. In this regard the present study concerns itself with the effect of replacing the acetate by a cyano group in acetylcholine.

This study represents an attempt to apply established methods of detection for cellulose and chitin as structural materials in the mem· branes of a group of organisms consisting, for the greater part, of higher fungi. These methods have been combined with purification procedures resulting in a technique which has not been used previously on so broadly representative a group of higher fungi.

In recent years there has been a great increase in interest in the effects of explosive decompression, primarily because this phenomenon represents a major hazard of high altitude flight. Majovski et. al. (1944) in their studies concerning the effect of vitamin-P-like materials on the incidence of lung hemorrhage, noted that the presence or absence of food in the stomach seemed to alter the nature of the response. Later Kibrick and Goldfarb (1944) reported that 20-27 hour fasting markedly reduced the incidence of lung hemorrhage compared with fed controls. During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, a considerable number of investigators gained fame for their studies of the organisms usually placed in the order Amoebida, class Rhizopodea, subphylum Sarcodina, phylum Protozoa (Jahn, 1949), commonly referred to as the naked amoebas. Because these scientists were working in a relatively untouched field of investigation-which it still remains-their attempts to classify the organisms they saw and depicted resulted in considerable confusion as to which amoebas were really legitimate species, and which were simply varieties of established species. In a number of previous papers we have reported on modifications in the morphogenesis of Drosophila melanogaster Meig. by x-irradiation, neutron bombardment, and under adverse environmental conditions. Additional data concerning the problems involved are found in the papers of workers in the same field, who have used the same or different methods of approach (Patterson, 1929; Geigy, 1931; Henshaw, 1933; Richards and Furrow, 1925; Jones, 1936; Russel, 1940; Hartung, 1942; Lawrence, 1937; Combs and Gravett, 1937; Mavor, 1927; Bardeen, 1910; et al).
