Toxic Algae In Iowa Lakes, Earl T. Rose

Almost all of the natural lakes of Iowa develop at certain periods throughout the summer and fall months, heavy growths of small floating plant life commonly known as blue-green algae. These tiny, primitive organisms develop rapidly in certain lakes, and often form unsightly, paint-like scums over calm lake surfaces, and particularly along lee shores. Upon decomposition of these heavy scums, or "bloom" as they are commonly termed, terrifically foul, pig-pen odors issue therefrom, making human living conditions in the vicinity intolerable, and limiting to a large degree all aquatic recreation. Bird students are usually only vaguely aware of the orderly sequence of arrival dates of migrants and summer-residents in a given area. They know merely that certain species may be expected to appear at certain times each year. If data are compiled and presented in either tabular or graphical form, it becomes possible to evaluate year-to-year differences within one species and to make comparison between species. During the winter-spring-summer periods of 1947-1948, 1948-1949 and 1949-1950, the author gathered data on the occurrence of birds in northern Emmet County, Iowa. Morphological Identification Of Free-Living Amoebida, Eugene Cleveland Bovee

One of the knottiest problems in zoology is the specific identification of naked, free-living amoebas of the order Amoebida. Usual methods of taxonomic identification, i.e. easily distinguishable morphological contours of sufficient permancy seem to be lacking in them. Schaeffer (1926), amongst others, points out that such a creature as "the amoeba," does not exist. He speculates, perhaps rightly, that the naked, free-living amoebas are of polyphyletic origin, and that to attempt to classify them phylogentically is virtually impossible. The supposed "simplicity" of amoebas, because of their resemblance to the "basic cell," has given credence to the belief that there is …

The Channel Catfish was shown by Speaker (1948) in a sample of 1800 Iowa anglers to be the most important species of fish inhabiting the inland streams of Iowa. Therefore, any information concerning its life history and habits is important and of value in formulating a management policy for the species. To get information on the life history and habits of the channel catfish, tagging experiments were initiated in 1947. Tagging was carried on through 1949 and recoveries are continuing. The information sought by this investigation was: (1) to study the possibility of using marked fish for an inventory of …

In the comparatively short time since carp (Cyprinus carpio) were brought to the United States, they have dominated an amazingly large percentage of the fishery resources of this country and an equally large percent of the efforts of fishery management. Carp have been credited at one time or another, by sportsmen and biologists alike, with being the root of all fishery problems and in many cases game problems as well. The writer's interest in this study is a direct outgrowth of his teaching classes in Genetics for many years. Much has been written in the genetic literature about the inheritance of abnormalities in hands and fingers such as brachydactyly, clinodactyly, etc., and yet, relatively little has been done to study the normal occurrence of these inherited variations in the average population. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyze in an average population sample, such as a college student body, some of the anatomical variations that normally occur in the digits of the hand. The crowing cock count is one of the major techniques used to census the pheasant population in Iowa. Together with the roadside census (Bennett and Hendrickson, 1938) and the rural mail carrier count, it forms the basis of determining the pheasant population indices. Successful in estimating the numbers of mourning doves in Nebraska by counting their calls, McClure (1944) devised a system of counting pheasant calls as an index to their population levels. At first, aerial bombs of the fireworks variety were detonated to increase the intensity of the calls. In a later study (McClure, 1945) one minute counts during …

There is little definite information regarding the distribution limits of mammals known to occur in Iowa and neighboring states. The purpose of this paper is to add to the rather sketchy knowledge of mammal distribution in Iowa. There is need for much more observation and collection of specimens and data before a comprehensive picture of mammal distribution is completed. A better knowledge of where certain mammalian forms do, or do not, occur is important to the students of ecology, game management, parasitology, taxonomy, and agriculture since the mammal coactions with other life forms have important relations to these fields.

Many years prior to the settlement of Iowa her streams had been scoured by Indian hunters and white trappers for fur, principally beaver. The hunters and trappers had taken the cream of the beaver before the earliest settlements were established; however, remnants of the population were still present as is attested to by the fact that Iowa geography has many names alluding to the beaver. Beaver could not stand both persecution and civilization, so they disappeared from Iowa sometime after the seventies and in 1872 the legislature placed them on the "continuous closed season" list. When one reads many of the long narrative poems of Robinson Jeffers, one wonders at the characters who act out their lives against a backdrop of the contemporary California coastal region. The characters live isolated lives as ranchers, farmers, and farm women; they go about the business of eking out an existence, of cultivating their land, of caring for their livestock. Often, they commit horrible, unnatural acts and always, they or their families are involved in episodes which result in death or injury. Herbert V. Hake attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, where he earned his master's degree in scenic design in 1933. In the summer of 1936, he began his career at the Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) with the Theater Department. From 1938 to 1942 he served as technical director, scenic designer, and instructor of speech courses. He was a pioneer in radio and television.

Macropseudogynes (Or Pterergates?) In Formica Fossaceps Buren (Formicidae), R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

Large worker ants with vestigial wings were found in certain colonies of Formica fossaceps Buren at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory near Milford, Iowa. This paper deals with one of these colonies (49F), found on the Laboratory grounds, June 15. 1949; vestigial winged workers were present in considerable numbers in this colony. Extensive collections were made: in 1949, a total of 1414 workers, 117 (8.3%) with vestigial wings; in 1950, 9 males and 539 workers, 32 (5.9%) with vestigial wings; the colony was not found in 1951. Congenital abnormalities are known to occur occasionally in man and farm livestock, and frequently in laboratory animals subjected to certain types of experimentation. A high percentage of the cases are fatal to the young depending on the nature and severity of the complications. In many instances death of the affected young occurs during pregnancy or parturition. Should the feti survive parturition death usually follows shortly thereafter. Extended survival occurs in a small percentage of young and these are mildly to severely handicapped in one or more of a multiplicity of ways. There are many causes of congenital abnormalities. Some Lichens From Southern Colorado, James H. Craft

The cryptogams of the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountains of southern Colorado have not attracted the attention of many botanists during the past half century. The published ecological and floristic studies of North American cryptogams show few records from any portion of Colorado further south than Pike's Peak. Llano (2) and Thomson (3) make but incidental mention of lichens collected by visitors in 1899, 1937, and 1942. The collections listed below constitute a material addition to this very meagre record. All these specimens, collected in the period between February, 1950-September, 1951, were found at altitudes between 7600 and …
