Food Of The Bigmouth Buffalo, Lctiobus Cyprinellus (Valenciennes), In Northwest Iowa Lakes, Tom Moen

Three species of the genus Ictiobus occur m Iowa waters; the bigmouth buffalo, Ictiobus cyprinellus, the black buffalo, Ictiobus niger, and the smallmouth buffalo, lctiobus bubalus. Of these three species the bigmouth buffalo is the most common in the Northwest Iowa lakes, the remaining two species are comparatively rare. Bigmouth buffalo (hereafter referred to as buffalo) have been removed from Iowa lakes as undesirable and obnoxious fish since the early nineteen hundreds. Harlan and Speaker (1951) state that nearly a half million pounds are removed from the inland waters of the state each year by the State …

Variation In Leaf Pubescence In Viola Incognita Brainerd And V. Renifolia Gray, Norman H. Russell

One of several morphological characters widely used in the separation of species and varieties in the genus Viola is that of lamina pubescence. In some cases, particularly in the common acaulescent* blue violets, specific distinctions based primarily on leaf pubescence have proven unsatisfactory. In other instances in Viola, presence or absence of pubescence has served as an excellent separating character between certain closely allied species. In his comprehensive survey of hybridism in the violets, Brainerd (1924) often used the amount of pubescence as an indication of degree of hybridization and demonstrated in many cases that it was inherited apparently in …

The white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, was undoubtedly abundant along the streams of Iowa when white man first settled here. The greater portion of the state, however, was covered with a lush growth of prairie plants and grasses more conclusive to the production of prairie chicken than of deer. Leopold (Crane, 1933) reported the original stock of deer was mostly gone by 1865, although a few herds remained until about 1915. Madson (1953) elaborated upon the blizzards of 1848-1849 and the heavy kill by early settlers during the terrible winter of 1856. This may well have marked the beginning of the …

The term "seiche" was introduced in to limnological literature by Forel in 1895. He observed surface-oscillations on the Lake of Geneva and recognized them as rhythmic movements or standing waves, caused by the wind, especially noticeable when the wind fluctuated in force or ceased altogether, permitting the surface water which had piled up on the downwind surface of the lake to seek its own level again. Surface seiches have also been observed on some American lakes; Lake Mendota (Bryson and Kuhn, 1952) and Lake Erie (Hayford, 1922) to mention only a few. This paper is a report on the fishes collected in 17 streams draining the western and southern slopes of Iowa into the Missouri River. These streams include the Big and Little Sioux, Rock, Floyd, Ocheyedan, Otter, Soldier, Boyer, Maple, Willow, Plumb, Walnut, Nishnabotnas, Nodaway, Grand, 102 and Chariton Rivers. A total of 18 families represented by 74 species of fish arc reported.

Clinical tests have received widespread acceptance as tools for predicting and assessing human potentialities. A casual review of the testing area reveals the existence of a large number and variety of such instruments. In the use of tests, the counselor is the common denominator-he is the one who clarifies, interprets and makes recommendations to the counselee. Sherman (1) found that experienced clinicians, using Kuder profiles, could more accurately predict curricular appropriateness in the physical and biological sciences than in English. Appropriateness is defined as grade point average. If a student gets a higher grade point average in English than chemistry, …

Melilotus is a Eurasian leguminous genus of some twenty species. Two species, M. albus and officinalis, introduced to the North American continent are now among the most important broad-leaved forages. M. indicus is a naturalized common weed in the southwestern United States; M. altissimus is locally established in the northeastern states. During the last two decades, the sweet clovers have been under investigation at several stations with respect to the development, through plant breeding, of new and improved strains. Some of the immediate goals have been increased yield, improved forage quality, and freedom from coumarin. In this connection, investigators have …

For at least 30 years, during summer and fall months, the shade trees in residential areas of Ames, Iowa, have been a nightly rendezvous for thousands of bronzed grackles, Quiscalus quiscula, starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, cowbirds, Molothrus ater, and robins, Turdus migratorius. Each evening the birds have come from the surrounding countryside to roost in the city's trees, and each morning they have left to return to their feeding areas. Cover Density Of A City Summer And Fall Bronzed Grackle Roost, John C. W. Bliese

Ames, Iowa, is one of the many Midwestern cities that have the dubious distinction of having a "blackbird" roost. During the summer and fall months thousands of birds each evening come to roost in the shade trees in· residential areas. Records kept in 1951 (Bliese, 1953a) indicated that roughly 74 per cent of the birds were bronzed grackles, Quiscalus quiscula. Regularly associated with them were about 22 per cent starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, 3 per cent cowbirds, Molothrus ater, and 1 per cent robins, Turdus migratorius. Observations from 1949 to 1952 also revealed that at times purple …

Blue-Green Algae Control At Storm Lake, Earl T. Rose

Heavy growths of blue-green algae are a major factor in limiting recreation at several of Iowa's lakes during the summer. The huge accumulations of these small primitive plants render lakes uninviting for swimming, angling or sight-seeing and when decomposition of the algae occurs putrid odors emanate therefrom creating intolerable situations. Occasionally certain species may become poisonous (Olson, 1951; McCleod and Bandar, 1952; Ingram and Prescott, 1952; Rose, 1953), thus creating the necessity for emergency measures to prevent loss of human life as well as loss of domestic animals and wildlife.

Purpose of the study. It was the purpose of this study to present a summary of the conservation education program of the Iowa Teachers Conservation Camp located at Springbrook State Park near Guthrie Center, Iowa. The study involved four problems:

l. To record the history and philosophy of the camp.

2. To present a summary of each summer's camp program from 1950 through 1953.

3. To secure the campers' appraisals of their camp experience.

4. To prepare recommendations for future camp programs.

The problem of the nature and type of chemical compounds utilized during the embryonic development of an organism has been studied for many biological forms and considerable data exist concerning the basic details of such phenomena (Needham, 1942; Spratt, 1952; Cleland and Rothschild, 1952). The terrestrial, cleidoic or "closed system" egg seems to be rather favorable material for study of this problem since the exchanges of materials from the outside to the inside of the egg and vice versa appear to be at a minimum.
