On The Half-Life Of Nests Of Formica Obscuripes Forel., R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

In these Proceedings for 1953 (p. 656) we discussed the duration of nets of Formica obscuripes Forel. We now have data for two additional years which establish certain facts only indicated earlier. The survey was started during the summer of 1945 on the grounds of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in Dickinson County, Iowa. Nests of the thatching ant were marked with metal tags on wire stakes and were plotted by compass readings from conspicuous features of the surroundings. The survey was repeated each summer; new nests were located and marked, and the loss of old nests recorded. The data are …

The cheery whistle of the male bob-white, Colinus v. virgmzanus L., is a familiar and welcome sign of spring wherever this species occurs. Game biologists have made practical use of the bob-white's whistle by using roadside counts of whistling bob-whites as a means of estimating changes in relative abundance from year to year (Bennitt, 1951) . As devised by Bennitt for use in Missouri, the roadside whistle counts required the services of a large number of observers. Each obsnver was assigned a predetermined "station" consisting of about thirty miles of all-weather road within a major soil type. Counts were made …

In recent years, some dissatisfaction has been expressed concerning the commonly used classification of the Fungi Imperfecti. The discontent with the present system has arisen from the fact that the characteristics used to delimit taxa (i.e. spore color and septation, arrangement of the conidiophores, etc.) often results in the separation of morphologically similar genera, while at the same time placing together what seem to be unrelated genera. The present system was proposed by Saccardo when the major interest in the Fungi Imperfecti was in their role as plant pathogens. Determination of ethyl alcohol in human biological material is the most common forsenic chemical examination, the majority of such determinations being performed in connection with investigations to establish the presence or absence of alcoholic influence in operators of motor vehicles. Utilization of alcohol determinations by law enforcement agencies in the United States continues to increase rapidly as demonstrated by an increase of 220% in the number of cities employing chemical tests for alcoholic influence during the last 4 years¹. The formation of a model control program as a guide for Dutch elm disease control in Iowa seems advisable when the recent spread of the disease is considered. Such a control program, with the campus of Iowa State College taken as the physical area, is the main objective of this paper. lt also illustrates the part local biology classes and service organizations can do in an undertaking of this kind. There are five main activities included in a sound Dutch elm disease control program. These are education, evaluation, maintenance, sanitation, and spraying.

This investigation was undertaken to determine qualitatively the complement of diatom species in six different soils in the vicinity of Iowa City, Iowa. Separating diatoms from the various soils and cleaning them presented a problem requiring the trial of several existing techniques.

What helps a physicist grow? This question and a very good answer appeared in a recent issue of Physic Today. The answer in case you didn't sec it was given by Eaton H. Draper of AVCO. "Top level associates, freedom from routine, and technically sophisticated assignments are all vital. But the one most important factor is a climate which encourages a healthy questioning of the known, as well as the unknown. Given this a scientist or physicist will perform at his peak, and beyond." Pheasant Nesting And Production In Winnebago County, Iowa, 1940 Versus 1954, Edward L. Kozicky, George O. Hendrickson

The Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit has conducted research on the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) since 1935 on the Winnebago Research Area. From 1939-41 intensive nesting studies were made (Baskett, 1947) and again from 1950- 54. However, during this latter period, other investigations curtailed a complete nesting investigation, and it was not until 1954 (Klonglan, 1955) that time was available for a complete study with comparable spring pheasant populations. Since fall pheasant population levels in the 1939-41 period were estimated at 140 to 400 birds per section as compared to 100 to 110 birds from 1950-54, an intensive nesting study …

In past years the life histories of almost all our common game and rough fishes have been studied. The knowledge of age, growth, condition, food consumed, reproductive potentials, and population dynamics arc basic fundamentals in modern fisheries biology. This study is concerned with the angler harvest, age and growth, body-scale relationship, length-weight relationship, coefficient of condition, population trends, spawning activities, and fecundity of the northern bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) in West Okoboji Lake, Iowa.

This building venerates one of Simpson's most distinguished former students, George Washington Carver. Wing Venation In The Adephaga And Its Contribution To Phylogeny, Edwin W. King

It has been assumed for some time that the adephagous beetles, with the possible exception of the Rhysodidae, constitute a relatively homogeneous group. This assumption is not challenged here; the purpose of the present preliminary study is to examine certain evidence drawn from the wing venation of the most generalized (venationally) available species in an attempt to ascertain possible trends in venation among the various families. The scope of the material examined, as well as the species ultimately selected as being the most generalized in their respective families, are tabulated below.

The Flora Of The Pine Hill Prairie Relict, Thomas Morrissey

The purpose of this paper is to describe one of the few remaining tracts of virgin prairie in eastern Iowa. The Committee on Conservation of the Iowa Academy of Science, particularly in the reports of Dr. Ada Hayden (1945, 1946), has urged the preservation of native Iowa grasslands in order that they may serve as natural out-of-doors laboratories for the study of ecological and taxonomic problems. A flora of the kind presented here may be of value when compared to grasslands in the eastern and western states: It may help determine the effect of environmental forces which vary in different …
