The most interesting, informative, and profitable course taken by the writer as an undergraduate (at Oberlin College) was a travelling field course through the northwestern states led by Dr. Lynds Jones, Professor of Ecology. In direct imitation of this, a similar course was conducted in the summer of 1955 by Iowa State Teachers College, which covered 6,600 miles, from Cedar Falls to the northwest corner of the state of Washington, through the Badlands and Black Hills, and Yellowstone, Glacier, Mt. Luminescence phenomena have been known for perhaps as long as man has been recording history, but it has been only recently that some of these phenomena have been utilized in the study of plant tissues. Anything which can disturb the energy equilibrium within an atom of matter is at least intrinsically capable of causing that atom to emit light. As a corollary to this, any form of matter capable of absorbing energy is potentially capable of being excited to luminescence. Many biological compounds are in this category and most of them emit visible light when irradiated by invisible ultra-violet light. …

One of the most interesting capacities of protozoans is their ability to replace lost parts following injury. Although they are structurally the equivalent of cells they are functional organisms, and a study of their behavior makes it possible to bring together concepts usually applied in the cellular field with those applied in the analysis of whole organisms. The same factors that operate to evoke a particular form in the whole organism must act in a small regenerating piece of a protozoan. Whether these factors are nuclear genes or protoplasmic organization, they act rapidly in the regenerating animal, regulating the form …

Several workers (Greenspan et al., 1950; Reinhardt and Li, 1951; Stack-Dunne and Young, 1951) have reported a lack of correlation between the eosinopenic, adrenal ascorbic acid lowering activity, and maintenance of adrenal weights with various adrenocorticotrophic preparations. Reinhardt et al. (1951) have critically evaluated assay methods for adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and cautioned that differences in rate of absorption, variations in route of administration and dose-time-response relationships may influence the results obtained with different testing procedures. The study reported here was conducted under standardized conditions to determine whether the route of administration would influence the eosinopenic and adrenal ascorbic acid depleting …

The southern half of Iowa is well supplied with artificial impoundments in the form of water supply reservoirs, industrial pits, farm ponds and State owned artificial lakes. Individually these water areas arc relatively small, but collectively they furnish several thousand acres of fishing water. One important aspect of the management of these waters has been concerned with the education of the fisherman in the values of increased harvest of pan fish. The remarkable reproductive potential of fresh-water mussels bears testimony to their rigorous conditions of existence. The external fertilization, and the parasitic larval phase are biological hurdles to the realization of that potential, while the settling of the immature bivalves after leaving the fish host involves the many physical risks of molar action and unsuitable substratum. Predation and disease are usual factors acting to further reduce the life expectancy of any animal but few predators are capable of utilizing adult mussels as food. That temperature has a direct and significant effect upon growth of organisms is sufficiently well established, not only for Protozoa, but for other kinds of organisms. The measurement of the effect of temperature, however, is not always simple to achieve. When, in the course of setting up controls for another experiment, it became necessary to determine the capacity for growth of Euplotes woodruffi at several temperatures and pH conditions, not all of the difficulties that were actually encountered were anticipated.

The study of bacteriology is frequently not included in the high school science curriculum and often, when it is taught, it is dealt with in only a superficial manner. There are various reasons for this. Very often high school science instructors lack training in courses relating to bacteriology and consequently, feel inadequate to handle the topic with their students. Another factor rests with the fact that bacteria are difficult to study without the aid or microscopes with high power objectives. Many high schools lack this equipment. The disease crown gall manifests itself on various woody or herbaceous plants by the formation of tumor-like enlargements at the crown or on other parts or by extensive production of organs (roots, shoots). In both cases the abnormal development is an uncontrolled hyperplast, resulting in tumors or galls of varying sizes and form or in the production of organs, frequently out of normal position and in excessive numbers. Biology teachers in the smaller high schools are often confronted with the problem of securing sufficient classroom teaching material: charts, specimens, and reference books. A relatively inexpensive method of obtaining resource material would prove valuable to teachers confronted with this problem. Granting that actual study of specimens is of greater value than indirect methods, it is often helpful to have a supply of supplementary visual aids.

Variation In Length Of Songs Of The Black-Headed Grosbeak During The Breeding Season, Henry G. Weston Jr.

From April to September, 1945, and April to June, 1946, data were gathered on the breeding behavior of the black-headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) in Strawberry Canyon, on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley, California. Particular attention was given to the role of the sexes at the nest (Weston, 1947). Data were also gathered on variations of songs of the male during the breeding season.

Two previous reports to the Academy by the author have dealt with science teaching and science courses offered in the public high schools of Iowa, the second report dealing only with chemistry, offerings. Neither of these investigations touches upon the situation in Iowa's parochial schools. To complete the study such an investigation was made in the spring of 1955 and is herein reported.

For the past thirty years one of my major interests has been Organic Evolution, and coupled with that for most of this period has been Vertebrate Paleontology, with special emphasis on the earliest vertebrates. Taxonomic study of these primitive forms has been bound to lead to phylogenetic speculation, and of recent years that aspect has dominated my interest. At the same time I have become increasingly concerned with problems of the mode or modes of occurrence of evolutionary changes. Merging these two has given rise to some serious problems.

Notes On Tetracotyles Within Echinostome Rediae From The Okoboji Region, Martin J. Ulmer

The great abundance of snails parasitized by larval stages of digenetic trematodes in the Okoboji region in northwest Iowa makes this area a particularly interesting one for helminthological investigations. Lymnaea reflexa (Say), an aquatic snail found in large numbers in ponds near the Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji, show a remarkably high percentage of infection with strigeid metacercariae of the tetracotyle type. In some areas, collections of several hundred snails showed upon examination that 100 per cent were parasitized with developing and fully formed tetracotyles. These metacercariae, which are usually present in great number within the hermaphroditic gland of …

The freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens Rafinesque, better known throughout most of the midwest as sheepshead, is the only member of the family Sciaenidae in the midwest. This species has been the object of many arguments among fishermen as to whether it should be classed as a game fish or relegated to the rough fish group (carp, buffalo, gar -and etc.). Although sheepshead often take both artificial and live bait, it is the present policy of the fisheries management section of the Iowa Conservation Commission that the competitive aspects of this species outweigh any gain in food or sport that might …

The Fluctuation In Abundance Of Walleyes In Spirit Lake, Iowa, Earl T. Rose

One of the few lakes in Iowa which might be classified as typical for the walleye (Stizostedion v. vitreum) is Spirit Lake in Dickinson County. It is the largest lake in the State, covering nearly 6,000 acres. There are numerous rock reefs, points and bars together with many sandy and glacial boulder strewn beach areas. These factors along with relatively clear waters, free of objectionable summer algal blooms, provide a suitable environment for the esteemed walleye. This species is in great demand by sport fishermen and any deviation from fairly good angling succes is viewed with much dismay and concern. …
