One of the largest responsibilities of botanists to their science should be in the field of teaching. If the importance of botany in the curricula of colleges and universities is to be maintained then it is obligatory to study teaching problems critically, and to undertake periodic objective evaluations of teaching methods, practices, and procedures. Graduate students are prospective teachers who will assume responsibility for providing basic training in plant science. Since many gain their first teaching experience as assistants, introductory botany should be well taught in order to imbue them with the proper attitudes and skills requisite to their profession. …

One of the fundamental reasons for developing methods of power generation utilizing nuclear fission as the heat source is to extend the world's supply of energy resources beyond those available in the conventional fuels; coal, oil and gas. The only naturally occurring isotope which can sustain a chain reaction is U-235. In the fertile materials U-238 and Th-232, there is a possibility of magnifying the supply of nuclear energy by several orders of magnitude. In certain types of reactors, it is possible to produce more fissionable material than is consumed in the production of heat. This phenomenon is called breeding …

The Occurrence Of Blindness In The Black Bullhead, Lctalurus Melas (Rafinesque), Of East Okoboji Lake, Iowa, James Mayhew

During the summer of 1954 anglers reported numerous blind bullheads at East Okoboji Lake, Dickinson County, Iowa. Eventually one of these specimens was brought to the State Conservation Commission Biology Laboratory for examination. Blindness, of course, is not uncommon in fishes, but this type was apparently due to the complete absence of functional eyes. Gunter (1956) has reported on a red drum, from Abazon Bay, Texas, with a similar sightless condition. With evidence suggesting that blindness was rather common in East Okoboji, special attention was given to the bullheads captured during the annual fisheries survey of the lake. From the …

Clear Lake is a large ( 3 ,643 acres), shallow ( 20 feet, maximum depth) eutrophic lake located in north central Iowa. Most warm water game fishes common to the Midwest are found in this lake (Bailey and Harrison, 1945). The Iowa Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit initiated a creel census in 19 5 3 to determine the harvest of fish by anglers at Clear Lake. During the last four years several changes have been observed in the catch composition and fishing effort.

Although the northern river carpsucker, Carpiodes carpio carpio (Rafmesque), is one of the more abundant species of fish in the Des Moines River, it is not a well known fish. Few laymen are acquainted with it. Precise information on its life history is limited, and its ecological role has not been determined. The river carpsucker is rarely utilized by commercial or sport fishermen and for this reason is usually classified as a rough fish. A few carpsuckers enter the commercial fishery of the Mississippi River (Barnickol and Starrett, 1951) . Some are taken by sport fishermen using extra small hooks …

Mixed Colonies In Ants: Third Report, R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

There are two species of ants with deep clypeal fossae, belonging to the rufa group of the genus Formica, found in the region around the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory in northwestern Iowa. One of these, Formica fossaceps Buren, is almost hairless, especially on the dorsal surface, while the other, Formica obscuriventris clivia Creighton, is very hairy all over, with hairs even on the scapes. The latter species was reported erroneously as Formica areas comptula Wheeler in our earlier papers on mixed colonies (King, '49; King and Sallee '51). We have recorded large worker ants with vestigial wings in both species, and …

In the past twenty years a number of morphologists and physiologists have studied the organization and behavior of shoot apices during the vegetative and flowering phases of development. Changes in size and shape as well as alterations in stratification have been reported to occur during each plastochron or interval between the production of leaf primordia (Foster 1939). A number of authors have noted differences in size and shape between vegetative and flowering apices in the same species. Although the literature contains numerous references to studies on vegetative and flowering apices, only casual observations have been made on the possible permanent …

In recent years it has been our desire to evaluate the presence of antidiuretic substance (ADS) in the bloods of animals under various experimental conditions (Giere, 1951; Eversole, Giere and Rock, 1952; Giere and Eversole, 1954; Eversole and Giere, 1954). For these determinations we have used the method of Birnie, et al. (1950) and also Ames and van Dyke's (1952) modification of the intravenous method of Jeffers, Livezey and Austin (1942). Although these technics are qualitatively accurate it has been our experience that they are oftentimes difficult to duplicate. A Snake Trematode With An Unusual Condition Of The Genital Atrium, John D. Goodman

On April 8, 1948, the writer collected a blue racer, Coluber constrictor ftaviventris Say, along a small creek about three miles south of Lacey-Keosauqua State Park, Van Buren County, Iowa. Upon examination, the mouth was found to contain two trematodes belonging to the subfamily Ochetosomatinae Leao, 1944 (= Reniferinae Pratt, 1902). The trematodes were fully mature adults and were identified as Ochetosoma. vallida (Nicoll, 1911). Nicoll originally described this species as Lechriorchis vallidus from the hognosed snake, Heterodon contortrix Linn., but it was transferred by Talbot ( 1933) to the genus Renifer Pratt because of the lateral position of the …

Distribution Of Spartina Pectinata Link In Iowa, David G. Mobberley

Earlier taxonomic studies in the genus Spartina of the Gramineae show the existence of but one of the sixteen species in Iowa, Spartina pectinata Link. That it is widely distributed throughout the state is evident from Figure 1. The counties identified by dots have yielded specimens presently accessioned into the herbaria of Iowa State College, State University of Iowa and Simpson College. In addition, the species has been observed in numerous other counties although records are not authenticated by specimens entered into institutional herbaria.

Due to modern achievements in science, and increasing public support, medical research in the United States is gaining a strong foothold, particularly in the areas of cancer and heart disease. Medical research work demands the best available efforts from many different fields of science. Chemistry has and will continue to play a dominant role. Only in recent years, however, has the science of electronics emerged to· a place of major significance. The measurement of biological functions by means of extremely sensitive electronic methods presents a vast new horizon otherwise unattainable in the search for medical knowledge.

From my standpoint, the paper by Dr. Otis raises some issues of a rather fundamental nature. The possible relations between infrahuman and human behavior may always be counted on to raise some lively issues-but I sometimes wonder in so doing if the basic point is not frequently missed. Dr. Otis, in the best tradition, seems properly diffident and cautious in extending the findings from one phylogenetic level to another. Some of the parallels comparing the maze behavior of the rat with humans (with the gap of many "psychological light years") may have tended to divert us from an important point …

Development Of Sporocysts Of The Turtle Lung Fluke, Heronimus Chelydrae Maccallum (Trematoda: Heronimidae), Martin J. Ulmer, S. Chris Sommer

Although the turtle lung fluke, H eronimus chelydrae, has been known for more than half a century, its life cycle has remained enigmatic. MacCallum (1902) was the first to describe this trematode, examples of which he recovered from the lungs and bronchi of a snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina, collected in Ontario, Canada. Barker and Parsons (1914) in a preliminary report described the same worm under the name Aorchis extensus. Their specimens were from the lungs of a painted turtle, Chrysemys marginata, from lakes in Minnesota and from the Mississippi River at Fairport, Iowa. A fuller description of the parasite by …

The golden hamster has found increased use as a laboratory animal over the last two decades. It is of particular interest because it hibernates although its periods of dormancy are short compared to those of other hibernators (1). The complete spectrum of physiological norms should be determined for this common animal just as they were for the laboratory rat. In the list of normal values for the hamster there is little published information on life span (2). The problem is divided into two major parts. The first part of the problem is to survey the schools in Iowa in which typewriting is presently taught in the junior high grades to determine the following:

1. Objectives of the course

2. Texts or other instructional materials used

3. Content of the course

4. Frequency of the course

5. Length of the course

6. Special problems peculiar to such courses

The second portion of the problem is the construction of a course of study for typewriting at the junior high school level.

The Value Of Including Chemistry Content In The Study Of High School Biology, Ramon Duane Buckley

The purpose was to evaluate the effect of including some definite chemistry content in high school biology. This evaluation was made by comparing outcomes of instruction in two different groups of a high school biology course. The two groups were equated in terms of the intelligence quotients, the sex, and the previous achievement in biology of the class members. The comparative gains in factual knowledge were measured by means of an evaluation test. The comparative gains in appreciations and interests in biology were measured with a questionnaire.
