Most of the literature about the in vivo effects of estrogens seems to be primarily concerned with vertebrate reproduction. This emphasis is a natural extension of the earliest recognition of induced estrus. However, it has obscured some reports of the effects of estrogens on organs and tissues which have no known reproductive or post-reproductive functions. The main purpose of this report is to draw attention to one such case.

The relationship of dietary fatty acids and the cholesterol levels found in serum and liver is, and has been, under study by many investigators. The relationships involved are undoubtedly intricate and more complex than most investigators seem to imply. Although Jones et al. imply a close relationship between rats and man in dietary requirements and habits, it is good to keep in mind differences that are intrinsic to both man and experimental animals. Most all research on life histories of fish in which age and growth are considered is based on the theory that annual rings are formed on the scales which can be counted to determine age, and that scale diameters increase proportionately with the length of the fish which permits the calculation of growth for each year of life. On the sixteenth day of May, 1950, the Iowa State Board of Education (now known as the Iowa State Board of Regents) entered into a contract with George D. Strayer for the conduct of a survey of the three institutions of higher education under the control of the Board. On October 19, 1950 George D. To be of value, the frozen section technique must be simple, fast and must yield slides showing good definition. Most of the methods currently in use are rapid enough but fail to provide clear details; other methods give good definition but are too time-consuming. The method described here is fast, shows good details and results in permanent slides. It makes use of the stain coelestine blue B, employed earlier by Proescher and others (1946) as a nuclear stain in combination with azophloxine as a cytoplasmic stain. The genus Brassica, a member of the Family Cruciferae, contains approximately fifty species, including experimental forms. It is one of the more important genera of the family, and includes such economic plants as cabbage, turnip, kale, rutabaga, cauliflower, broccoli and table mustards. The entire genus is indigenous to the Old World, and many species have been cultivated since very early times.

The immediate effects of exposing oat seeds to high dosages of X-ray are generally twofold: (a) many of the seeds fail to germinate, and (b) the seedlings produced are stunted. It is generally accepted that these physiologic effects react the same as other environmental variation in biological materials. However, it is possible that even though the physiologic effects disappear in one generation that certain weaknesses may persist but remain hidden. Weakened linkages of some type within chromosomes could conceivably be a case in point. If this is the case, one might expect the effects to be cumulative with repeated x-ray …

It is necessary to investigate the solution chemistry of the nonmetallic elements in iron to understand the chemistry of steelmaking. Most of these elements have an appreciable solubility in liquid iron, but may be separated from the iron by precipitation of an insoluble compound with another metal. They may also separate from the iron when the metal is cooled and solidified; in these circumstances an iron salt, or the salt of another metal may be formed. The distribution of a non-metallic element between such phases and what is still in solid solution may be described by an equilibrium constant that …

Recent developments in ruminant nutrition by using estrogenic additives to stimulate the rate of gain and feed efficiency of beef cattle (Burroughs et al. 1954) indicated the important role of feeds and forages containing estrogenic substances. Forages such as clover and alfalfa have been shown to contain small amounts of estrogenic substances (Cheng et al. 1953a). An isoflavone derivative, genistein, isolated from soybean oil meal was found to be estrogenic by the mouse uterine weight assay (Cheng et al. 1953b). Several isoflavone compounds have been synthesized chemically (Yoder et al. 1954) and they have been shown to be estrogenic also …

A report on the initiation of the SIRP-Bendix, St. Ambrose was presented during the 1956 Iowa Academy of Science meeting. At that meeting three student reports on projects undertaken as a result of this program were presented. Two student project reports were presented at the 1957 meeting. Four student reports will be presented at our 1958 meeting. A former St. Ambrose student who reported initially at the 1956 meeting on ultrasonic plating, Mr. Roy Buckrop, will report at this meeting. In recent years it has been our desire to evaluate the presence of antidiuretic substance (ADS) in the blood of animals under various experimental conditions (Giere, 1951; Eversole, Giere and Rock, 1952; Giere and Eversole, 1954; Eversole and Giere, 1954). For these determinations we have used the method of Birnie, et al. (1950) and also our modification of the technic of Ames and van Dyke (1952). It has been long known that the males of most species of Collembola bear a specialized genital plate surrounding the gonopore. In some groups, such as the Isotomidae and Hypogastruridae, this structure has been useful in making taxonomic distinctions while in the Entomobryidae and related families this organ has been largely ignored. The reasons for this are many but are primarily concerned with the difficulties of examination of this organ in the entomobryids where the whole body is densely covered with large setae and/or scales. The ciliates which live a commensal life on the gills and in the mantle cavities of mollusks include several species of peritrichs, but most of them belong to a suborder of holotrichs called Thigmotricha (Chatton and Lwoff, 1922). Very little work has been done on the geographical distribution and host-specificity of the ciliates of mollusks. Emphasis has been placed rather upon the taxonomic and morphological features.

Measurement Of Some Factors Affecting The Catch In A Minnow Seine, Andreas A. Paloumpis

In a study of the effects of drought and flood on fishes of a small stream (Paloumpis, 1958), it was necessary to compare the fish population at different seasons on as quantitative a basis as possible. Wire traps, an electric shocker, and rotenone were used to collect some of the data, but most of the quantitative data for comparative purposes were secured by regularly seining with a 20-foot common sense minnow seine.

The primary purpose of this study was to ascertain, through the opinions of the graduates and students who had dropped out of the Traer Public High School, how effectively this school had prepared them to meet the problems that confronted them after leaving high school.
