Flowering Dates Of Viola Sororia Willd. And V. Pensylvanica Michx. At Different Latitudes, Theodore A. Mcconnell, Norman H. Russell

The response to daylength has been shown to be significant in the initiation of flowering in many species of vascular plants. Herbarium specimens of Viola sororia Willd. and V. pensylvanica Michx. from a wide range of latitudes were examined to ascertain correlation between dates of flowering and length of day. Two observations were made: the higher the latitude, the later flowering occurred in the spring; and the higher the latitude the greater the daylength at the time of open flowering. It is suggested that these north-south clines represent a genetic response arrived at through natural selection. Further studies arc proposed …

Teaching Field Botany From Canoes In Southern Canada, Normal H. Russell

During late August and early September, 1958, the author and Mr. Irwin L. Simone, instructor in physical education at Grinnell College, took ten undergraduate students on a 23-day canoeing trip through the Lac La Croix area in southern Ontario. The purpose of the trip was to survey the plant life of the area from both taxonomic and ecologic viewpoints, and three semester credits in biology were given by Grinnell College for the course. The preparations necessary and the journey itself are described. In addition, the teaching techniques are dealt with.

The Arthropod Soil Fauna Of A Tall Grass Prairie And Adjoining Pasture, T. Edwin Rogers

Soils of a native tall grass prairie and an adjoining grazed pasture in central Oklahoma were studied in an effort to determine some of the major groups of Arthopoda represented in the microfauna, and to see what effect, if any, moderate grazing had upon the animals present. During a period of 12 months, 132 cylindrical samples of soil approximately 3 inches deep and 1.6 inches in diameter were taken. Half came from each area. Animals were separated from the soil by the use of Tullgren funnels. Soil temperatures, moisture content, and volume weight of samples were recorded. From the prairie …

Notes On The Mites Of An Iowa Cave, Michael T. Irvin

An investigation was made of some of the environmental factors which are most important in determining the distribution of Acarina in caves. Because of the relative stability of the environment, Bogus Cave, Jones County, Iowa, was selected for the study. A moistened camel's hair brush, an aspirator, and the flotation method were used to collect specimens. Three families of mites (Eupodidae, Ascaidae, and Belbidae) were found; none were troglobites. The data indicate that the mites in Bogus Cave are limited to areas of constant humidity and temperature, a good organic soil cover, relatively small soil particles (100μ to 150μ), and …

Microorganisms Found In Field Specimens Of Diseased Corn Borer Larvae, Earle S. Raun, William R. Lockhart, Russell J. Beers

Two hundred and eighty-six abnormal, field collected larvae of the European corn borer were examined for the presence of microorganisms which could have caused the abnormality or death. The most common microorganism found was a microsporidian, Perezia pyraustae Paillot. Next most numerous was a group of enterobacteria. Spore forming rods apparently of the genus Bacillus, and fungi belonging to the genera Beauvaria and Metarrhizium were also isolated. An examination of 100 apparently normal pupae revealed that 82 were hosts to Perezia pyraustae and two contained bacteria.

The Use Of Toxaphene As A Fish Poison In Strip Mine Ponds With Varying Physical And Chemical Characteristics, James Mayhew

Fifteen ponds were treated with toxaphene concentrations that varied from 0.01 to 0.1 parts per million. Preliminary studies revealed wide variations in the chemical and physical features of the ponds. Approximately 3,500 pounds of fish were killed. Carp, gizzard shad, and quillback were the most numerous; other species included largemouth bass, bigmouth buffalo, black crappie, black bullhead, bluegill, yellow bass, and channel catfish. Detoxification studies were conducted on five ponds. The first pond detoxified within 90 days; two remained toxic to fishes for 270 days. Factors important to the duration of toxicity are discussed.

Growth Of The Walleye In The Des Moines River, Boone County, Iowa, James C. Schmulbach

Even though the habitat is marginal, a considerable fishery exists for walleyes in the Des Moines River. Tagging studies indicate the annual rate of harvest to be about 10 percent. The size of the population is evidently limited by frequent fish kills due to high water temperatures in the summer and oxygen depletion in the winter. Considerable variation in growth exists within age groups and between year classes. Possible explanations include: (1) sexual differences, especially between fish over four years old; (2) frequent fish kills which result in vacancies in the habitat; (3) low water levels during certain years; and …

The current emphasis which the "atomic age" has placed upon the education of "gifted" or "talented" pupils in science and mathematics has provided educators with an opportunity to devise and implement new and unique programs in the elementary and secondary schools. Educators have utilized two approaches in meeting the challenge--acceleration and enrichment. Many secondary schools in all parts of the United States are offering pupils opportunity to take more advanced course work than the traditional curriculum had allowed. College courses, as well as high school subjects, are being offered at the high school level both during the regular academic year …

The purpose of the study was to ascertain the degree of change, if any, of two hundred delinquent boys during their rehabilitation at the Iowa Training School for Boys, Eldora, Iowa. This information would be established on the basis of the ten areas of personality as depicted on the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey.

In 1953 the writer published a Checklist of Iowa Mammals with notes on new species and changes in distribution since 1937. At that time it was apparent that much information was lacking on distribution of some species. A few forms were small, retiring, and difficult to collect. A large number were conspicuous fur bearers and game species that had moved into new territory or had escaped notice of systematic mammalogists in the past. Some larger mammals for which considerable distribution data were lacking included the otter, grey fox, wildcat, woodchuck, chipmunk, red squirrel, grey squirrel, and white-tailed jack rabbit. Midwestern Population Studies Of Viola Papilionacea Pursh, Norman H. Russell, Jeanette Graham

Since about 1900 nearly every taxonomist concerned with the violets nas referred to Viola papilionacea Pursh as the "common blue violet". Generally speaking, the blue violets of towns and cities especially have been referred to this species. In the major herbaria, the folders containing specimens labeled Viola papilionacea are frequently much larger than those for any other species of the genus. Its habitat has been reported to be "near dwellings", "roadsides", "dooryards", and "common in moist fields". Its range is reported to be "Mass. to Minn., s. to Ga. and Okla.", and it has been reported from other places well …

A Procedure For Determining The Relative Volume Of Mitochondria In Hepatic Cells, Paul A. Meglitsch, Leland P. Johnson, Rodney A. Rogers, Frances R. Rogers, Alison M. Meglitsch

About forty years ago Cowdry's monograph on mitochondria appeared evaluating the work of previous investigators, indicating synonymy and, in a sense, bringing the first exploratory phase of the study of these cellular constituents to a close (1). Reasonably specific methods for their demonstration had been devised, and it was possible to have some confidence in the conclusions that the so-called mitochondria of different kinds of cells, despite dissimilarities in size or shape, were comparable cellular parts.

The Nature Of Viola Missouriensis Greene, Norman H. Russell

One of the most distinctive of the stemless blue violets of the upper midwest is Viola missouriensis Greene, the Missouri Violet. It is one of the approximately twenty-eight species of the Subsection Boreali-Americanae, Section Nominium, a group of violets somewhat notorious for their propensity for interspecific hybridization. Population studies were initiated in 1956 to define the members of this group more accurately and to determine the effect of hybridization upon their taxonomy and evolution. The Subsection Boreali-Americanae includes the so-called "stemless" (acaulescent), blue-flowered species. Within this group of species, two types of violets can be roughly distinguished: the entire-leaved species …
