Some Mammal Remains From A Jackson County Cave, James M. Trosky, Emmett Polder

Excavation of a trench in the floor of a cave at Springbrook, Jackson County, Iowa, yielded bones of nine species of mammals. At a depth of 19 to 24 inches the jawbone of a porcupine and the upper right canine tooth of a black bear were found. There are no museum records of either species in Iowa. Intermingled with these remains were clam shells and ashes probably left by cave dwelling Indians. Historical literature indicates that the bear probably was extinct in Iowa before the Civil War and the porcupine before the advent of white settlers.

Cottontails With "Horns", Arnold O. Haugen

Published information on papillomas, commonly called horns, on cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) in Iowa dates back to 1907. Specimens of horned rabbits are on record from Woodbury, Pottawattamie, Cherokee, Franklin, and Boone counties. Those from the last two counties were necropsied at Iowa State University in 1958 and 1959-60, respectively. Information from conservation officers and biologists shows sight records for a number of years past for at least 16 additional counties. The malady seems to be limited almost entirely to the western half of the state.

Prior to about 1870, Thailand had no formal school system. Education in general was undertaken as a family task. However, as society became more complex, special institutions were developed to promote desired educational activities. Such developments have been gradual, and in large measure in reference to national interests.

Numerous articles on the possible causes of an increasing shortage of scientific manpower have been published. Many of these articles have stressed the lack of sufficient guidance in directing capable students in high school toward an emphasis in science. It is pointed out that insufficient guidance alone, among high school students, is a major factor in the increasing shortage of scientific personnel. As a result, the schools have been under criticism.

A physical science test has been administered to each member of the freshman class upon entrance to Iowa State Teachers College since the fall of 1952. The individual score on this placement test determines whether that student will enroll in 82:20 The Physical Sciences, whether he will enroll in a science course chosen by the student, or whether he may be excused from all required physical science courses in the general education program.

It has been shown previously that the weight (W) of an entire litter of newborn young of multiparous mammals is proportional to the number (N) in the litter. This proportionality may be expressed by the empirical equation

Naturally Occurring Radioelements In The Ground Waters Of Iowa, Charles N. Brown, R.L. Morris

Reconnaissance studies of radioelements in the ground waters of Iowa indicate that, where radium is present, it is Ra²²⁶, the biologically significant isotope. Its distribution varies, but it appears that (1) waters from consolidated sandstones in areas distant from recharge points may contain up to 8 ^μ,μc/L Ra²²⁶; (2) waters from limestone aquifers vary but, in general, are likely to contain appreciable amounts, up to 3 ^μμc/L Ra²²⁶; and (3) waters from glacial aquifers contain little, if any, Ra²²⁶.

A Biometric Technique For Reaction Tissue Research, Graeme P. Berlyn

Images of sections of tissue taken from the upper side of leaning stems of Populus deltoides were projected on a paper grid system. Specimens were oriented so that the cambium and the last three annual increments were included in cross section. Counts of stimulated and non-stimulated cells in randomly selected grids were recorded. This procedure provides a means of subjecting the incidence of tension wood and other cytohistological phenomena to statistical analysis.

Philodina megalotrocha were grown in isolation culture in Knop's solution or variations thereof, buffered at pH 8.4, at a constant temperature of 30° C. Temperature toleration ranged from 5° C. to 35°C. Upper and lower limits of pH tolerance were pH 10.2 and pH 4.0. Longevity in low salt concentrations (0.02 percent) was increased over that of high concentrations; egg production was not altered except at high concentrations (0.06 percent), at which point it was very low. The effects were tested, one at a time, of high and low concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. In low calcium solutions longevity …

Modification By Light Of 24-Hour Activity Of White Rats, G. Edgar Folk Jr.

The 24-hour rhythm of running activity of white rats originates from a light-cycle and can be reversed by illuminating at night rather than by day. If continuous light is used, the activity phase of the rhythm remains 8-12 hours in length but shows a regular, constant and definite amount of alteration or delay in the time of starting so that the activity block travels around the clock. Behavior modification such as this should be called a photoperiodic response. A Modification Of The Carbowax Embedding Technique For Plant Tissue, Waldo S. Walker

The highly hydrate condition of the wall material of the cells of collenchyma causes considerable difficulty in the preparation of permanent sections of the material which are suitable for quantitative studies. When standard procedures of dehydration and embedding are employed, excessive shrinkage of the wall material is common. In an attempt to avoid this shrinkage, polyethylene glycol (carbowax) was used as the killing, fixing, dehydrating and embedding medium. This method met with considerable success. The schedule outlined is a modification of that used by A. R. Spurr.

A list is presented of the 147 species of marsh and aquatic tracheophytes known from Clinton, Jackson and Jones counties, Iowa. Annotations indicate the 213 new county records found among the writer's recent collections.

Formica Fossaceps Buren And Formica Obscuriventris Clivia Creighton As Slaves Of Formica Rubicunda Emery, R. L. King, R. M. Sallee

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Observations on mixed colonies have shown that Formica fossaceps and Formica obscuriventris clivia both live as slaves for Formica rubicunda together with Formica cinerea montana and Formica fusca. Formica obscuriventris clivia may start its colonies as a temporary social parasite of fusca.

Some Characteristics Of Bacteria Isolated From Diseased Larvae Of The European Corn Borer, Russell J. Beers, William R. Lockhart, Earle S. Raun

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A large proportion of the bacteria isolated from diseased corn borer larvae are pleomorphic, with rods, diplococci, filaments and various transition forms occurring in many cultures. Gram reaction is negative, although the coccoid forms show a tendency to retain gram positivity. In morphology and biochemical characteristics, these isolates resemble certain entomogenous bacteria described by earlier workers, but are similar also to a group of bacteria from human sources which have been designated as members of the tribe Mimeae DeBord. Further studies have been initiated to determine the pathogenicity and the proper taxonomic position of these cultures.
