The trend in secondary biology is to use living material in so far as it is possible. Biology instruction, as it has advanced beyond the descriptive level, has included more projects requiring living animals. The local collecting and culturing of some of these organisms adds just that much more biological experience to the course.

To truly accelerate students in science and mathematics at the secondary level, we must be able to predict success in science and mathematics before the student progresses too far in the accelerated course sequence.

Experimentally Induced Mammary Tumors In Swiss Mice With Cephalobus (Nematoda Cephalobidae), Robert C. Goss, Robert Stevens

Mammary tumors developed when 7-month-old Swiss-Webster female mice were subcutaneously injected with nematodes in the dorsal frontal area of mammary tissue. Reactions observed were loss of vibrissae (47%), development of tumors (24%) and death (10%). Loss of vibrissae occurred within 1 or 2 weeks after the third injection. Tumors developed between the seventh and tenth week. No animal developed multiple tumors involving different regions of the body nor did spontaneous tumor regression occur.

A Study Of The Small Rodents Of Black Hawk County, Iowa (1961-1962), Raymond L. Sloan

Two-hundred and fifty-nine small rodents were collected in Black Hawk County, Iowa, from June 1961 to June 1962. Specimens were taken from 53 locations in the county. Specimens of the following species were collected: Spermophilus tridecemlineatus tridecemlineatus, Reithrodontomys megalotis dychei, Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii, Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis, Microtus pennsylvanicus pennsylvanicus, Microtus ochrogaster ochrogaster, and Mus musculus. Perognathus flavescens perniger and Tamias striatus griseus were reported to have been obtained by other investigators, but neither was taken during this study period.

Extracellular Pectolytic And Cellulolytic Enzymes Of Pyrenochaeta Terrestris, J. C. Horton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Extracellular pectolytic and cellulolytic ensymes were produced in vitro and in vivo by Pyrenochaeta terrestris. Mycelial development was sparse on cellulose, very good on glucose and best on pectin. Cellulase synthesis was the same at culture temperatures from 15°C to 30°C while pectinase synthesis was optimum at 20°C.

Some Aspects Of Pheasant Reproductive Success In Iowa, 1948-1963, Richard C. Nomsen

A summer sight record project was conducted in Iowa from 1948 through 1963 to check annual production of pheasants. The ratio of juveniles to adult hens, or young per hen, indicated the rate of reproductive success. Young per hen figures indicated trends in the fall pheasant populations each year except 1950. There was a close relationship between reproductive success and mean temperatures for April. This correlation was significant at the 0.05 probability level when results for 1954 were eliminated. Temperatures averaged 12 degrees below normal during the first week of May in 1954, which reduced pheasant production. Results of the …

The orangethroat darter, thought possibly to be extinct in Iowa, has been collected from a limited area north of Marion in Linn County, and from Des Moines County, near Burlington. An unpublished record from Davenport has not been confirmed. Another record from Taylor's Slough at Ft. Madison, in Lee County, is considered doubtful.

Gross Structure Of The Cervical Region Of The Uterus Of White-Tailed Deer, John E. Morris

The uterine cervix of the white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, consists of the narrowed-down multiple-valved part between the vagina and the hollow thinner-walled uterus proper. The length of the cervix of a mature doe in December may vary from 40 mm to 84 mm. It is composed of four to six, but generally of five, heavily muscled valves with the openings through the valves alternating dorsally and ventrally. This arrangement of valves results in an undulating or twisted passageway through the cervix. Age and reproductive history influences variation in size. Age, Growth, Fecundity And Food Habits Of Fantail Darters In Boone County, Lowa, James R. Karr

Although 117 fantail darters (Etheostoma flabellare) were collected from Bluff Creek, Boone County, Iowa, during summer 1962 and winter 1962-63, only 1 was found in the Des Moines River. Slenderhead darters occupy the similar riffle areas in the river. Female fantail darters were 18.7, 34.8, and 42.4 mm at the first through the third annuli, respectively, and male darters were 18.5, 36.7, 59.0, and 62.0 mm at the first through the fourth annuli, respectively. No females were found that had formed a fourth annulus. Average coefficient of condition for 104 fantail darters was 1.749. Length-weight relationships for males and …

The scores of The Kuhlmann-Finch I.Q. test, Nelson Biology Test, Read General Science Test and Iowa Tests for Educational Development were correlated with success in BSCS Biology as indicated by the BSCS Test scores. A prediction of success standard based upon these test scores is presented. It is concluded that the BSCS success can be predicted by using the Read General Science and Nelson Biology test scores.

Summer Emigrations Of The Frog Rana Pipiens In Northwestern Iowa, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Ann M. Bovbjerg

During the summers of 1961, 1962, and 1963, mass emigrations of Rana pipiens pipiens Schreber occurred at the end of the first week in July. The intensity of the movement varied in the three years. Environmental causes for this movement were considered; temperature changes, precipitation or crowding do not seem to be operating. Samples of the tadpole populations were examined and the metamorphic changes prior to emigration are rapid and regular. With final metamorphosis into juvenile frogs, the emigration suddenly begins. It appears to be triggered by internal events related to maturation.

For many years, educators have noted that girls seem to attain higher class rank than boys while attending secondary schools. It appears that this idea has been accepted a priori and that little research effort has been put forth to determine the magnitude of the differences which exist. It is a matter of conjecture at the present time as to how great the differences must be before they will be considered to be serious problems.

Since the late 1950's, American education has been undergoing a critical evaluation and review. This review has brought about some changes in emphasis and an upgrading in science curricula. The American Institute of Biological Sciences, supported by the National Science Foundation, accepted major responsibility for the field of biology and established the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS). H. Bentley Glass., Chairman of BSCS, states: "The aim of the Biological Science Curriculum Study is to place biological knowledge in its fullest modem perspective. To accomplish this aim, a program of research, writing, testing, and evaluation was inaugurated.
