The overhead projector, a familiar sight in many science rooms, can be used in a number of interesting ways. In chemistry, I use the overhead to demonstrate reaction rates of metals in acids. Just put your beakers (labeled with wax pencil on the bottom) on the overhead and watch the reactions take place on the wall. You can, also, demonstrate titration end points with the overhead. The colored indicators show up nicely.

Observations On The Morphology And Life History Of Oswaldocruzia Sp. In Frogs, B. T. Ridgeway

A series of experiments were instituted in order to clarify the life history of Oswaldocruzia sp., a nematode of frogs. Suitable hosts were collected and examined for the nematode. Artificial infection of laboratory reared frog tadpoles and young frogs by use of incubated juvenile stages of the parasite was undertaken with negative results. Several reasons are suggested to explain failure of infection attempts. The likelihood that juvenile Oswaldocruzia used experimentally were not infective stages of the parasite is suggested. Morphological characters of the worms support this idea. The possibility that tadpoles and young frogs are refractory to infection, and involvement …

An Analysis Of The Developmental Effects Of The Embryonic Lethal Mutation X-23 In Drosophila, Phillip J. Reitan

The developmental abnormalities resulting from a recessive, second chromosome, X-ray induced lethal mutation acting during the embryonic period of Drosophila melanogaster are described. Embryos of 18-22 hours of development were studied. The pattern of abnormalities indicates that the lethal effect was due to a general cessation of development during the period from 9-14 hours. There is a general failure of mid-gut and muscle development. The hypoderm, foregut and hindgut structures appear to have developed normally. In the absence of muscle development, hypodermal differentiation produces deep furrows which distort the structure of the embryo. Variation in the expression of the lethal …

A Quantitative Method For The Study Of Pollen And Spores In Bog Sediments, La Verne H. Durkee

A filtration method involving a membrane filter for the collection and subsequent microscopic examination of weighed, treated samples is presented. The filter and the sample collected upon it are both mounted for microscopic examination. The filter permits sufficient light passage for identification of spores and pollen upon its surface. This method permits a more accurate transfer of weighed samples from centrifuge tubes to microscope slides.

Glucose Inhibition Of Cellulose Synthesis By Pyrenochaeta Terrestris, J. C. Horton, N. T. Keen

The rate of synthesis of Pyrenochacta terrestris cellulase was determined on the substrates of glucose, cellulose, and cellulose + glucose. Enzyme production was rapid on cellulose, almost negligible on glucose, and intermediate on cellulose + glucose. On the latter substrate, cellulase appeared after the near exhaustion of glucose. The authors suggest that extremely low concentrations of soluble carbohydrate regulate cellulase synthesis.

Age And Growth Of Largemouth Bass In Clear Lake, Lowa, J. Douglas Thompson

Age and growth of 281 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, collected from Clear Lake during the years 1947 through 1963 were determined by the scale method. The body-scale relationship had an intercept of 1.00 inch in total length. The weight increased as the 3.091 power of the length and a slight increase in average condition was found for fish from 15 to 20 inches in length. The growth curve was somewhat above the median of 30 curves reported for other waters. Lee's phenomenon was not evident, suggesting sampling was not size selective. Eighty-three of Iowa's 99 counties have established County Conservation Boards. County park areas, river access sites, wildlife areas and roadside parks in that order lead the list in numbers developed to date. Polk, Linn, and Black Hawk counties lead the list in area available with 2544, 2275, and 1952 acres respectively. Special safeguards are urged for administration of lands preserved for scientific purposes.

Dispersal Related To Density In The Amphipods Hyalella Azteca And Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, Philip T. Clampitt

The relationship between population density and rate of dispersal and tendency to aggregate in two species of fresh-water amphipods, Hyalella azteca (Saussure) and Cammarus pseudolimnaeus Bousfield, was tested by laboratory experiment. Populations of H. azteca showed an inverse relationship between initial density and dispersal rate; this relationship is a function of the tendency of populations of higher densities to form aggregations. The dispersal rate of G. pseudolimnaeus was not appreciably affected by changes in population density, and increased density did not result in aggregation. Both species aggregated around vegetation in preference to aggregation around other amphipods. The non-aggressive behavior and …

As a possible method of detecting an extrasolar planet, astrometric spectroscopic, and photometric methods are considered. Interest has been focused on the search for a planet whose physical conditions appear to favor biological evolution that could lead to the development of life as advanced as that on the Earth. In order to avoid speculative arguments, the set of assumptions introduced consists of only those that are acceptable at the present stage of our scientific knowledge. These basic assumptions are: (1) The speed of biological evolution is about the same as on the Earth; (2) a planet of our interest has …

The organizing efforts were furnished principally by the Cedar Rapids Council of Parent-Teacher Associations, under the energetic leadership of Dr. and Mrs. John F. Troxel. Affiliation with.
