Recognizing the need for innovation in methodology, Postlethwait (1964-1965) has developed an integrated experience approach to learning called audio-tutorial. The Department of Science at the University of Northern Iowa, after investigating available data, initiated the use of an audio-tutorial method for part of its general botany course in the spring of 1966.

Breathing rates and ventilatory data obtained from young subjects of college age during exercise conditions imposed by riding a bicycle ergometer and using standard physiological laboratory equipment and a polygraph indicate that this type of study is feasible during standard laboratory experiences.

Studies On Streptomycin Effects In Arabidopsis Thaliana (L.) Heynh, Sujit K. Dhar

Bleaching (interference with the production and/or accumulation of potentially green tissues) of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh by Streptomycin (SM) is followed by severe inhibition of expansion of leaves, elongation of stem internodes, coleoptiles and roots. Arabidopsis shows no enhancement of growth when sugar is supplied to the medium, and it was found that Gibberellic acid has an antagonistic effect on growth inhibition of SM. Seeds germinated in darkness in SM-containing medium when subcultured on SM-free medium in darkness and transferred to light, turned green normally. Seeds germinated in light in SM-containing medium stay bleached permanently, even after subculturing in SM-free …

A comparison of the level of understanding of science between secondary teachers and students was made by P. E. Miller in 1962. The measuring instrument used was the Test On Understanding Science (TOUS), Cooley & Klopfer 1961. The science teachers were compared with groups of secondary students in grades seven through twelve.

Influence Of Gibberellic Acid And Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Morphology And Population Dynamics Of Eudorina Elegans, E. Russell Tepaske, Dale Robert Frank

Assuming optical density to be a function of population density, colorimetric techniques were used to determine the effects of two growth regulator substances, indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellic acid, on the morphology and population dynamics of Eudorina elegans. A tube of culture medium without organisms was used as a reference point to calibrate the colorimeter. Chemically-treated cultures and soil-water control cultures were compared to the reference reading and growth curves were plotted. Colony counts were made at the termination of the experiment and comparisons were made with the colorimeter readings. Results demonstrated gibberellic acid to be a promoter of cell division …

Propylene Oxide Sterilization Of Media Containing Bacterial Populations, Micheal J. Naylon, Robert C. Goss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Propylene oxide sterilization of media containing soil bacterial populations occurred after 11 hours exposure in a closed system. Population reaction to the sterilant was characterized by inhibition intervals in the sterilization process. These stages represent minimal survival rates of 70%, 40%, and 7% respectively. A sterilization threshold (less than 1% survivors) occurred between 8-10 hours. Homogenous populations of Bacillus subtilis showed survival values in the first inhibition interval until the 4th hour. Lethality was noted at the 5th hour of exposure and other stages observed in heterogeneous populations did not occur.

Reproductive Systems In Chelone Glabra Var. Glabra, T. S. Cooperrider

The results of a series of experiments and field observations indicate that bumble bees are the chief pollinators of Chelone glabra L. var. glabra, but that their activity may lead frequently to geitonogamy and less often to xenogamy. Flowers from which corollas were removed failed to attract bees and did not produce seed. Flowers that were unaltered but shielded from insect visitation also failed to produce seed. Seeds were produced on plants cross-pollinated by hand. Seeds were also produced after pollination of stigmas with pollen from their own inflorescence. This facultative geitonogamy is likely a contributing factor to the geographical …

Successful Renovation Of A Small Natural Iowa Lake, Terry Jennings

Center Lake, having a surface area of 264 acres, is located in northwestern Iowa. During 1958 management problems in the form of stunted bullheads and carp along with very poor fishing, indicated the lake should be renovated. During October, 1958 liquid toxaphene was applied at a rate of 0.05 ppm. Apparently, a complete kill resulted. During 1962 an estimate of the bluegill population was made. Nearly 1,100,000 bluegills or about 500 pounds per acre, were present at that time. The 1962 black crappie population was estimated at 250,000 or about 140 pounds per acre. Comparison Of Channel Catfish Populations In Channeled And Unchanneled Sections Of The Little Sioux River, Iowa, Bill D. Welker

Comparisons are made of channel catfish in channeled and unchanneled sections of the Little Sioux River with regard to abundance, movement, and age and growth. Mean catches per unit effort of channel catfish were higher during May to October bi-weekly periods in the unchanneled section. Movement was predominantly downstream in both areas. In the unchanneled section 23.7% moved upstream, 69.6% moved downstream, and 6.7% were recaptured at their release site. In the channeled area 25.8% moved upstream, 39.8% moved downstream and 34.4% were recaptured at their release site. Due to the free exchange of catfish between both areas, growth rates …

Effect Of Thyroidectomy On The Mechanics Of Skeletal And Intestinal Smooth Muscle, Russell R. Rulon

Rats made hypothyroid by surgical thyroidectomy were compared with controls relative to the shortening velocity and maximum shortening ability of the intestinal smooth muscle and the gastrocnemius. Hypothyroidism showed some potentiation of maximum shortening, but no effect on the shortening velocity of the gastrocnemius. Intestinal smooth muscle maximum shortening as well as shortening velocity tend to be depressed. There is some evidence for a differential effect of thyroid hormone lack in the two muscle types.
